Lights...Sound...ACTION!
“We were looking for some inexpensive but ‘real’ equipment to let our students gain classroom experience with intelligent fixtures. The equipment that Lightsounds recommended fit the bill perfectly, and was amazingly feature-packed for the price. We were very happy with the service from Lightsounds - both before and after the sale. I’ll definitely look at them for future
purchases and would recommend them as a vendor.”
Mikkel Mynster, Head of Production - National Institute of Dramatic Art

Unless you’re an audiophile (and you know who you are), lighting and sound sys-tems can get pretty technical, leaving you overwhelmed and wondering if you’ve even purchased the right equipment for your school. Let’s untangle this mess, so you know exactly which type of speaker is best suited for your auditorium, or gymnasium. So what’s the best choice when consider-ing your speaker setup? Active speakers have their advantages, yet so do power amps and passive speakers. Grab your favorite beverage of choice, sit back, and relax - we’re going to take you through all of the major differences.
The “Active” Experience
Active or powered speakers come with an amplifier built into the enclosure. This is really handy for easy, fast set-up as the active speakers contain the electronics and amplifier allowing you to just plug and play. It also means less components to carry around as there is no separate amplifier.
It’s a one stop shop. Setup is simple, and it’s great for PA, School Dances, Speaking from the stage, etc.
Most active speakers tend to be made out of ABS (that’s plastic to you and me), which keeps their weight down but they do also feature heavy duty enclosures.
Some active speakers are wooden and perform brilliantly with increased power and volume. These have the convenience of being active but with more of the audio and tonal qualities of larger, passive, wooden speaker systems.
Many active speakers have the facility to plug in guitars, microphones and music devices. They usually come with multiple channels, separate volume controls, digital effects with MP3 players and advanced equalization too.
The “Passive” Experience
Passive refers to a speaker that needs tobe powered by a separate amplifier. These power amps aren’t like domestic hi-fi ver-sions. They usually only have a volume knob for each channel on the front, and some operational electronics in the back. The result is lots of power with some amps rated to thousands of watts per channel.
Passive speakers and power amp combi-nations are best installed in venues or in professional touring rigs as they are ideal for controlling the amplifier without being anywhere near the speakers. Usually, when using sub bass or multiple speakers, ad-ditional components such as equalisers and crossovers are required to ensure the best sound quality for a particular room.
Passive is a GREAT alternative for a more sophisticated setup to include multi-channel concerts, plays, and bands.
What’s The Best Option For Me?
It all depends on what you will be using the equipment for.
Generally passive speakers go much louder than their active counterparts. Some would argue that passive speakers have a more pleasing sound, although active speaker technology is now such that they are strong competitors! In a venue passive speakers would certainly be best suited with a separate amp, but really the main difference is that active speakers are fast to set up being highly portable and more power efficient for their size and weight.
Acoustical Wood!
Another key difference between active and passive speakers comes down to their construction material. Active speakers tend to be made from plastic while passive speakers are usually wooden. There are examples of both however and it is key to remember that wood is a more resonant material that lends itself well to music and vocal performance.
In the end, the decision should be based on your needs, hopefully not on your budg-et. Moving in the direction of a passive speaker setup with amplifiers and wireless mics will lend you the most long term ver-satility, no matter what the purpose.

Passive Speaker Solutions
Picking the right speaker size depends on the size of the hall and audience. The smaller speakers (8”-12”) have better sound reproduc-tion in the high frequencies which are great for speeches, singing and instruments. They are usually recommended to be combined with a Subwoofer to improve the low end (thumping) especially if you are planning to play modern dance music with a strong beat. 15” speakers are a good all-rounder and are typically louder than the smaller sizes. They don’t need a sub as they already feature reasonable low end frequency performance. There are 2 series of passive speakers depending on your budget and preference.

Active Speaker Solutions
Most active speakers are plastic moulded and are designed for visual appeal and port-ability. The Titan range is one of the most reli-able and well-accepted Pro Audio brands in Australia. It is almost impossible for the driver on a Titan speakers to be overdriven as these speakers feature an inbuilt Qubit Proces-sor which prevents the frequencies entering the speaker from damaging the driver. This makes these speakers incredibly reliable.

Wireless microphonesWireless mic frequencies have changed from January 2015 onwards due to the onset of digital TV channels. All wire-less products from Lightsounds fit within the regulated frequency range allowed for such devices. If you have old exist-ing wireless mics it is very likely that the range on those devices is no longer allowed. A safe frequency spectrum for wireless audio devices is 520–694MHz.

Top Three Ways to Achieve “Broadway-Level” Lighting to Entrance Your AudienceA little lighting magic can go a very long way. Lighting your band not only adds a new dynamic to your shows but it’s also a great and worthwhile way to stand out from the crowd! Adding production value to your gigs can mean the difference between you getting top billed or being the eternal support act.
The best thing about lighting is that you can create an impressive effect on a rea-sonably modest budget. Stage lighting can be as simple as a set of par cans, or as sophisticated as a fleet of intelligent mov-ing heads programmed to every beat of the music. The good news is that lighting has become more affordable and convenient, whether buying your own lighting rig, or hiring one on a gig-by-gig basis.
TEN SIMPLE LIGHTING TECH-NIQuES TO MAkE YOur BAND LOOk THE BOMB
1. Who’s in the Spotlight?
Typically profiles or spotlights are used on individual performers so that they’re the focus point during the show. The lead singer would be lit up during a song’s per-formance, however if there is a lead break then the guitarist would become the focus point in order to direct the audience’s atten-tion to them. The spotlight does not have to be white; in many cases shades of amber and warm white can be used depending on the mood you’re looking to create. And the extreme of red is great for a ‘fiery’ performance for example. One par can is okay but ideally we’d rec-ommend using 2-3 for a small performance to light the star performer from multiple angles. The height of the lights needs to be 1-2.5m which can be achieved using a lighting stand.
2. Backdrop or “Cyc” Lighting
A stage will generally have a back wall that can be used to project a backdrop or illuminated to match the mood of a song. One could use par cans with a set colour or changing colours as per a pre- pro-grammed sequence (via DMX usually). If your music is upbeat and has a high level of bass to it, you can use the par cans or another disco effect set to music activation.Mood lighting such as a water or oil effect is also possible if you require a soothing look.If you want to achieve brighter and more interesting effects in the background, use a couple of moving heads with gobos (gobos are built into the light and allow it to project different shapes on the wall) rotating and changing shapes. This option is more ex-pensive but can certainly be hired instead of purchased without breaking your budget.
3. Mood and Drama
Different colours can drastically change the mood and intensity to a show. Use darker colours like blue or violet for a dramatic blues effect or colours like amber or red to add energy to the performance. The light source would usually be a par can or a wash led bar. These can be placed in dif-ferent locations e.g. shining from the side onto the performers to add another dimen-sion of colour to the show.
Always make sure the lead performer or singer is washed by a brighter colour than the rest of the band to draw attention to them. If there is no lead performer as such, then we recommend that all members of the band are highlighted by the brighter colour in clear contrast with the back-ground lighting.

Lighting Control optionsMost lighting controllers rely on a protocol called DMX. DMX allows individual functions of a light to be controlled by an external controller. Functions such as colour, bright-ness, blackout, gobo (projected shapes, e.g. in moving heads), XY movement (where applicable) are examples of what you can control via an external DMX controller. DMX is not a necessary feature in a light unless you have a larger number of lights to control simultaneously or if you need to control the exact movement of more complex lighting fixtures such as moving heads.

Effect MachinesFog Machines emit thick fog, which can be used for theatrical applications or in dance parties to show the lighting beams in the air. Fog machines vary in power depending on the amount of smoke required. Low lying foggers produce fog that stays low to the ground which is perfect for stage and theatre.
Haze machines produce thin haze which his less visible in the air. It is used for enhancing the lighting effect in the air without the overwhelming thick fog.
