“ The new technologies which are now available for manufacturing products are far removed from the past when product design was determined predominantly by mechanical processes. We are moving into a virtual era in which it will not necessarily be possible to understand the way in which something was manufactured by simply looking at it. Adopting too much of a flowing shape for a product like MELLOW LIGHT V would have been inappropriate: when one enters a room, one can see hundreds of such luminaires in rows on the ceiling with constant repetition of an identical product. Here we need to devise an idiom which, even when repeated, is refreshing without constantly calling for attention.”

Strong, harsh shadows and reflections on shiny surfaces: the brightness distribution of a lighting solution with louvre luminaires produces an unnatural effect.
Lighting quality DIRECTIONAL LIGHT
OPTIMUM LIGHTING QUALITY
Louvre luminaires create harsh shadows at steep angles. This causes reflected glare on inclined display screens and shiny surfaces, and the layout of the workplace has to suit the luminaire. A louvre lumi-naire's strongly directional light leaves the ceiling dark. This unnatural brightness distribution has a claustrophobic effect. Dust and dirt can easily accumulate on the exposed blades of the luminaire, which has an adverse effect on its efficiency and effectiveness.
Uniform light distribution without reflected glare and harsh shadows: MELLOW LIGHT V gets very close to natural light which is per-ceived as being very pleasant.
Lighting quality MELLOW LIGHT
MELLOW LIGHT V is similar to daylight and ensures uniform light distribution in a room. There is little direct glare, luminance levels are effectively reduced at all viewing angles. Breaking up the lamp image also eliminates distracting reflected glare. This makes it possible to opt for any position when arranging the layout of a workplace. MELLOW LIGHT V combines this great flexibility with reduced main-tenance effort. The sealed optic is far less prone to soiling than any louvre luminaire.
Example of refurbishment: Although slightly higher investment costs have to be factored in for MELLOW LIGHT V LED initially, refurbish-ing an existing lighting system incorporating louvre luminaires pays for itself after just 3 years. This is explained by its low energy and maintenance costs. Additional efficiency can be obtained by using a lighting control system such as DIMLITE. Presence detectors and daylight sensors effectively reduce the need for artificial lighting and improve convenience at the same time. With average energy con-sumption of only 12 kWh per year, MELLOW LIGHT V LED is recom-mended for buildings where sustainability certification is re-quired. zumtobel.com/sustainability

Surface anatomy of a Brightness optic
A unique distinguishing feature of the optic is that it is manufactured in one piece but combines various types of light distribution in one unit. Efficient, finely structured len-ticular lenses perfectly break up the lamp image, so that luminaires and workstations can be arranged indepen-dently in the room. The lateral lighting chamber with Soft Edge Prismatic Structure ensures typically “mellow” bright-ness distribution in the room while also reducing luminance to a level perfectly suited to office applications.
Surface anatomy of a HighDefinition optic
Combining high performance with a more structured and detailed appearance, the one-piece HD optic makes opti-mum use of the latest technology. From the soft MELLOW LIGHT distribution to the high light output ratio, the HD optic is the perfect choice for the modern workplaces.
Surface anatomy of a MicroVane optic
With its bright metallic surface, the MicroVane optic pro-vides a pleasantly elegant contrast to the lighting chamber boasting soft glare control. In addition, miniaturised cross blades provide effective glare limitation in compliance with EN 12464, with luminance levels below 1000 or 1500 cd/m² above 65°.

MELLOW LIGHT VProduct range overview
Flexibility thanks to diversity The amount of light produced by MELLOW LIGHT V ranges from 2000 lm to over 7000 lm. This means that the twin objectives of as few luminaries as possible and maximum possible lighting efficiency can both be met. LED models with 3000 K (warm white) and 4000 K (intermediate white) for every wattage provide additional options. Hitherto well-known in its square luminaire incarnation, MELLOW LIGHT V now also comes as a linear luminaire that boasts an impressively slim shape combined with extremely high light output ratios. MELLOW LIGHT V is also versatile when it comes to choosing a lamp technology: all the LED luminaires are DALI-dimmable, the classic fluorescent lamp models are also available in a switchable version.
MELLOW LIGHT V bears the eco+ label for especially resource-friendly products. For more information on eco+, please visit zumtobel.com/eco

MELLOW LIGHT VLED
LED With luminous efficiency levels of up to 122 lm/W, the new LED generation of MELLOW LIGHT V is up to 87 % more efficient than conventional luminaires fitted with fluorescent lamps. In combi-nation with the light sources’ service life of 50 000 hours, the way is cleared for the economically efficient use of LEDs for general office lighting. For this purpose, the optical system was explicitly designed for LED operation. This ensures balanced brightness distribution with visible illuminance levels, on both walls and the ceiling, which is typical of MELLOW LIGHT.
Colour precision MELLOW LIGHT V fitted with a HighDefinition optic is now available with a colour rendering index of Ra 90 at a colour temperature of 4000 K. This makes MELLOW LIGHT V the perfect lighting solution for hospitals, laboratories and care facili-ties, as the working conditions prevailing there place exacting re-quirements on lighting quality.

Lighting qualityIndividual LED lighting points are broken up perfectly by the primary optic, which prevents multiple shadows while providing highly uniform illumination of the task area.
Thermal managementThe highly effective passive cooling system ensures opti-mum heat dissipation despite its small dimensions. As the LED board and heat sink are closely connected to each other, the cooling system ensures a long service life of the LED module.
ControlMELLOW LIGHT V LED is basically equipped with a DALI-dimmable converter to combine optimum lighting quality with maximum energy saving potential.
Minimum maintenance effortThanks to the LED’s long service life, the maintenance effort of MELLOW LIGHT V LED is reduced to a minimum. Replacement of the light source is usually not necessary. An additional sealing rim fitted around the optic reduces soiling of the luminaire.
SustainabilityThanks to mercury-free light sources, a long service life and, last but not least, high luminaire efficiency, MELLOW LIGHT V makes a sustainable contribution to environmen-tal protection.

* Eh = horizontal illuminance
A user study on lighting quality perceived in offices conducted joint-ly with Fraunhofer IAO shows that users’ preferences with respect to colour temperature differ strongly. Usually, colour temperatures between 3000 K and 6000 K are perceived as ideal, with a clear preference for 4000 K and 5000 K. Another result of the study is that office users rate their situation at work significantly higher where it is possible for them to adjust the lighting to their individual needs. Since synchronisation of people’s inner clock through day-light is not ensured indoors during the dark months of winter,
Biologically effective artificial lighting solutions that are based on daylight and take weather conditions into account help to stabilise people’s circadian rhythm.
DIN SPEC 67600:201304 also includes specific design recommen-dations for biologically effective lighting. In this case, artificial light-ing solutions incorporating wide-area panels emitting diffuse light such as MELLOW LIGHT V tunableWhite combined with lighting management are vital for supporting daytime activities and ensuring a good night’s sleep.

MELLOW LIGHT Vfor emergency lighting
Emergency lighting included Thanks to the integrated LED emergency lighting’s characteristic light distribution, one luminaire is enough to provide sufficient orientation for an area of 130 m² and to make escape routes or obstacles visible. Thus, the number of emergency luminaires as well as the output required by the sup-ply systems can be reduced. A colour rendering index (Ra 40) that is high for an emergency luminaire and ideal glare control optimise visual conditions in an emergency.
The ONLITE RESCLITE emergency luminaire is a great way of continuing the LED concept into areas where there is no MELLOW LIGHT V. Equipped with equally long-reach optics, it delivers effi-cient LED emergency lighting that can get by with relatively little battery power because of the small number of luminaires and re-duced power consumption. The RESCLITE app for mobile devices makes designing emergency lighting really straightforward and convenient. zumtobel.com/resclite
Luminaire spacing for anti-panic lighting in conformity with relevant standards
