LIFE-TRIALKYL “An innovative and sustainable continuous process for the development of high quality trialkyl phosphites”

Demonstrative workshop– ARESE, Pilot Plant facilityLIFE14/ENV/IT/000346

STATE OF THE ART Although there is no conclusive data on their toxicity for human health and the environment, these chemical additives’ production can involve intermediaries (such as specific ammines) that need to be treated and recovered, or the use of phenolThese intermediates are often categorized as highly dangerous. Additionally, wastewater produced in the process needs to be treated before disposal or recycling and by products are not fitting with the circular economy concept

OBJECTIVES of LIFE TRIALKYL:

• Set up an innovative, highly sustainable and efficient industrial

chemical process

• Avoidance of the production of hazardous intermediaries, useless

by-products and the use of dangerous chemicals for waste water

treatment

• Reduction of energy consumption in the process by 20-30%

• Reduction water consumption by up to 100%, compared to the

current production process and eliminate any need of waste water

treatment

• Impact on agrochemistry with regard to:

• Production of insecticides that acts as

acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to control insects in a wide

range of crops. This production of insecticides in EU

consumes around 1500 MT/y of imported, low

sustainable trialkylphosphite.

• Inclusion of NH4Cl solid phase secondary product for agro

applications fitting with Circular economy concept

• Enhancement of the multiple waters strategy by making the

industrial water reusable in agriculture

• Increase awareness about alternative sustainable and eco-friendly

chemical processes in the chemical industry.

BACKGROUNDChemicals are an essential part of European Union citizens’ daily lives, and the chemical sector is also a major strategic sector for the EUChemistry is in every aspect of our life, even if often we do not see it. But, if not properly used and controlled, some chemicals can pose a severe threat to the environment and healthSeveral specific phosphorus derivatives are used in a wide range of applications, including pharmaceuticals, childcare products, detergents, lubricants, plastic additives and flame retardants

Transesterification process

The second technologies implemented in the EU and worldwide

Triphenyl phosphite is reacted with MeOH, to yield trimethyl phosphite and

phenol

The transesterification process thus involves the use of phenols derivatives (triphenyl phosphite), which

are harmful for the human health (sub-chronic toxicity to the skin, allergic reactions, irritation to

the respiratory tract, neurotoxic) and the environment (suspected mutagenic)[2014, ECHA database;

EPA database; 2005, D. Sasseville et al., Dermatitis 16(2); 1974, A. Hamilton, et al., Publishing Sciences

Group, Inc., 1974., p. 315].

-Wastewater:none

-Useoftoxicsubstances:2,6kgoftriphenylphosphite/kgofproduct,0,8kgofPHENOL/kgofproduct

PCl3 + methanol + tertiary amines process

One of the two technologies implemented in the EU and worldwide

The TMPi production process follows the reaction shown:

Wastewater: 4 l/kg of product (NaCl aq)

- Use of toxic substances: 4 kg of dichloromethane/kg of product, 1 kg of

NaOH /kg of product, 2,5 Kg of triethyl amine or 2 Kg methymidazole.

Commercial impact

• EU and Global Registration of the new technology:restart EU production of sustainable Trialkylphosphites(ECHA), today all imported from Far East

• EU regained leadership in the segment to serve EU andextra EU Enterprises

• New partnerships with downstream sectors within:• Plastic Industry• Lubricant Industry• Agrochemistry

• Co-development within the circular economy concept withthe agrofood industry starting from EU to Global

Lubricants• Generation of a social care chemical industrial product.

• Easier synthesis of lubricant additives acting as frictionmodifiers used is several applications.

• Reducing energy (fuel) consumption of the machineslubricated with said additives

• Enhancement of the Circular Economy in the Chemical Industry

Commercial impact

Other industries• Generation of a social care chemical industrial product.

• Easier and more economic synthesis of API (active PharmaIntermediates) using this type of molecules as primary rawmaterials.
