MetaphorsModule6/6

Class X Eng

L1

L1:Letter to God

Read the following …

• And the children look like bear’s cubs (A Legend of Northland)

• But all the rest of her clothes were burned

Black as a coal in the flame.

• The captain is as cool as a cucumber even in tense situations.

• The soldier fought like a lion.

In the above examples two things are compared using words ‘as’ /’like’.

The comparision is direct and the point of comparison is a quality…

For eg: the appearance , color of the clothes, coolness , courage/ bravery

Take a look at these sentences….

Ex: He was a lion in the battlefield.

The lawn was a green carpet.

The park was a lake after the heavy showers.

Life is a rollercoaster.

The stormy ocean was a raging bull.

In these sentences, two dissimilar things are compared indirectly. There is no use of ‘as’ / ‘like’.

When you make a hidden comparison between two unrelated

things, without using words ‘as’ or ‘like’, it is called a metaphor.

• Ex: the leg of the table: the leg supports our body so the object that supports the table is

described as a leg.

• The heart of the city: the heart is an important organ in the centre of our body. So this

word is used to describe the central area of a city.

Complete the exercise based on metaphors on page 11 in your textbook using the visual

clues given in the subsequent slides.
