Why KVM on Oracle Database Appliance?
• KVM is widely used and recognized by customers
• Oracle Linux support and licensing is included with Oracle Database Appliance hardware support
• It’s easy to deploy a single system with both the application and database
• You can isolate the database and application workloads and patching
• Oracle Bare Metal Cloud provides a KVM option

When Should KVM on ODA be used?
• Linux OS based applications that can run in a virtual environment
• Database licensed environments deployed on ODA include
– SE, SE1, SE2
– EE ULA
– EE databases with enough cores to support an application without increasing core count
• Want to implement a Solution-in-a-Box

Oracle Database Licensing Supported on ODA X7-2 Family
• SE/SE1 11.2.0.4 and SE2 12.1.0.2
• SE and SE2 RAC
• Enterprise Edition – 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2, 12.2.0.1
• For systems deployed with EE database only – set ODA core count high water mark via Appliance Manager
• Set the cores in multiples of 2

How will ODA Support SE1/SE2 RAC?
• SE2 RAC Licensing requirements
– Limited to 1 socket servers
– Front end processes are limited to 8 cores
• ODA will ONLY support SE2 RAC using the HA OVM/XEN virtualization– Deploy ODA_BASE with max number of 18 cores/server
– Provision SE2 RAC only in ODA_BASE
– Rest of the cores can be used for applications
• SE RAC Licensing requirements– No restrictions on sockets/cores
– Can provision SE databases in bare metal or virtualized stack

Knowledge Checkpoints
Can a customer use KVM for Hard Partitioning?
No, currently KVM is not supported for hard partitioning.
Does Oracle VM support Windows platforms?
Yes, Oracle VM supports Windows, Linux and Solaris X86
Does Oracle VM allow customers to use capacity on demand licensing for databases and applications?
Yes
Can Customers deploy SE2 RAC with KVM?
No, SE2 is only supported with the Oracle VM Xen Stack – because we need to use hard partitioning to restrict each server to one socket

Knowledge Checkpoints
Can a customer deploy SE and SE2 RAC on the same ODA?
Yes, but you will be limited to use the OVM/XEN virtualization on HA and follow the SE2 socket restrictions
Can a customer deploy SE & EE RAC on the same ODA X7-2 HA?
No because of the licensing metric differences
Can a customer deploy SE and EE Single Instance on the same ODA?
Yes, but only on the HA because you can separate the licensing one each node
