The lexical approach is a method of teaching languages described by M. Lewis in the 1993s. The basic concept on which this approach rests is the idea that an important part of learning a language consists of being able to understand and produce lexical phrases as chunks.

A lexical approach in language teaching refers to one derived

from the belief that the building blocks of language learning and

communication are not grammar, functions, notions, or some other unit of planning and

teaching but lexis, that is, words and words combinations.

Language is

Grammaticalized lexis not lexicalise

d grammar.

Successful language is a wider concept than accurate

language.

Introduction of chunks, practice of chunks, accumulation of chunks, use of chunks and collocations.

Teaching individual collocations.

Making students aware of collocations.

THE WAYS

Extending what students already know by adding knowledge of collocation.

restrictions to know vocabulary.

Storing collocations through encouraging students to keep a lexical notebook.

The Roles For Lexis By Michael Lewis:

•Lexis is the basis of language.• Ask and processes are emphasized.•One of the central organizing principles of any meaning-centered syllabus should be lexis.

It lacks full characteriza

tion of an approach lack of a detailed learning theory.

THE WEAKNESS

The lexical approach teach about word and word combination. There are collocation, idiom, etc. Teach about the good language learners do and how to do it. It is lexically based theory of language. Learning lexis is not an easy task, it is a slow and complex process which require a lot of dedication and effort from teachers and learners.
