Hacer + time expressions

• Use hace + time + que + a verb in the present tense

• To talk about an event that began in the past but is still going on,

Time expressions

• Una hora• Un día• Una semana• Un mes• Un año• Poco/mucho tiempo

Not an exact time

• Generally this does not have to be an exact time but rather gives a time frame of how long one has been doing something.

• Ex. ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que enseñas?• Hace veinte años que enseño.• Notice the pattern of hace + time +que + verb

in present.

You can’t go wrong!

• If you follow the pattern, you can’t get it wrong. Just remember that the subject does have to be used in the conjugation.

• So if I am speaking of someone else teaching, I would say, “ Hace veinte años que Maria enseña.” Just conjugate the verb accordingly.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español?

• Say: It has been 3 yrs. that you have been studying Spanish.

• Hace tres años que estudio español.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que Daniel toca la trompeta?

Respond with: 9 months

• Hace nueve meses que toca la trompeta.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que Juana tiene ese perro?

• Respond with it has been 5 years that she has that dog.

Answer

Hace cinco años que tiene ese perro.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que la profesora te conoce?

• Respond with 10 years that the teacher has known you.

Answer

• Hace diez años que la profesora me conoce.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias para el exámen?

• Respond with it has been 2 hours

Answer

• Hace dos horas que estudio para el exámen.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que tu amigo es tu amigo?

• 13 years

Answer

• Hace trece años que mi amigo es mi amigo.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que juegas deportes?

• 8 months
