What’s Friending?
“According to the urban dictionary, friending is the act of
adding to a list of friends on social networking sites such as
Facebook and Twitter. It is also a key component and
fundamental part of those sites (Boyd, 2006).”

-What has been missing . . .
“Interview findings indicated that it is often difficult for two
users who both call each other a friend to know if they are
talking about the same thing (Fono, D., & Raynes-Goldie,

Why Friending?
“Social networking sites help maintain relations as people
move from one offline community to another. (Ellision,

Friending
An
Undergraduate’s
Responsibility
2
Social media is one of the most varied and developing domains in the 21st Century. Hard
as it is to believe, by January 2009, the number of active users on Facebook is only slightly less
than the population of Brazil (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). It is not an exaggeration to say that
social media not only is a means of communication but also becomes a new virtual empire that
influence and may even take control of people’s life especially their social interaction. Among
numerous uses of social media, perhaps one of the most popular ones is ‘friending’. According
to the urban dictionary, friending is the act of adding to a list of friends on social networking
sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It is also a key component and fundamental part of those
sites (Boyd, 2006). Regarding the indispensability of social networking in undergraduates’
campus life, it is quite meaningful and necessary to illuminate their responsibility in friending.
Within this general definition, there are several types of friending that need to be
distinguished further. Friends on social networking sites can be classified into two categories:
actual friends and virtual ones. The first type includes family, schoolmates or friends whom
people have lost touch with in real life. Strangers, also known as e-friends, whom one gets to
know through social media and have only online connections with are included. Virtual
friends include companies or organizations created by people for advertising or commercial
purposes. The relationship with virtual friends can often provide information that people are
interested in. For example, NUS students’ sports club has a Facebook page. By adding its
members to the friend list, sports enthusiasts can receive updates about their events for better
participation. In conclusion, Friending refers to a new way through which people build
relationships online.

Start Friending Now!
Every day people do friending on different social
networking sites (SNS). Friending, as a new trend
of making friends, has infiltrated nearly every corner
of modern life. To arouse undergraduates’ awareness
of their responsibility in friending, it is fundamental
to show how to add friends. Among all these
websites, the most popular one must be Facebook.
Friending on Facebook requires only three simple
steps: logging in your account, finding potential
friends, and making a friend request.
To start with, you need to visit
www.facebook.com or use your app to sign in your
facebook account. After that, you should click on the
“Friends” tab on the left side of home page to see
your current friends list. In the step of “finding
potential friends”, potential friends mainly include
two categories, which are acquaintances and
same-interest friends. The searching method for your
acquaintances is to input their names into the search
box at the top of the page.
After viewing basic personal information of
possible results such as image, age, and
hometown, it should be easy to recognize the one
that you are looking for. You can also input key
words about your interests such as movies and
sports to find some relevant pages and to see the
other type of potential friends. When you have a
few confirmed friends, it is likely that you can find
someone you know in the friend lists on their
profiles. After finding those whom you want to
add, the last step is to click the “Add Friend”
button next to his name. This will send a friend
request from you to him. Then, all your work is
done. You can either wait for the acceptance of
your request or start to add another friend.

can change your friendship!

Romeo and Juliet Using Facebook -What has been missing when friending replaces the traditional way of making friends?
With the impact of social networking sites, the traditional way of
making friends does not fit in this social media era. ‘Friending’, as the
alternative, has many differences with the old way at several aspects such
as distance, time, and types of friends. Nevertheless, they still have one
trait in common. They are all developed through communication.
The traditional way of making friends is based on proximity. Usually, it
requires repeatedly encountering the person and having opportunities to
communicate with him. The traditional way lasted for hundreds of
thousands of year until the Internet shortens the distance among people
throughout the world. People can get to know strangers from the places
they have never been. Since they can simply send a request and add
anyone to their friends list at any time, it does not require timing as well.
On the positive sides of friending mechanism it can be said that the process of making friends becomes
easier and provides more opportunities. For example, Romeo meets Juliet and they get along well. In the
traditional way, for further improvement on their relationship, Romeo needs to wait for a few days to
encounter her again and it will take longer time for him to know how Juliet feels about him before they
become friends. Now, as long as they have social media like Facebook, the whole process can be done in a
few minutes and Romeo will have the chance to meet more “Juliets”. Talking about the negatives, since
friends online rarely see each other and the majority of friend list usually keep silence, the intimacy between
friends has decreased. It also brings us concern about whether undergraduates now know how to interact
with others offline. However, no matter which way people use to make friends, friendship still develops
through communication between different minds.
Juliet updates “she is in a
complicated relationship” on
Facebook. And Romeo likes this.
“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?”

Why Do People Do Friending?
Nowadays, almost everyone does Friending.
Socialization is as important as grades to college
students, and Friending is a major way of socialization.
With the fast development of social media, more and
more undergraduates engage in this new way of making
friends. Although there are various purposes for
friending, As Facebook’s aim shows, which is to let
people stay connected with friends and family, to know
what is going on in the world, and to share and express
the information that matters to them (Facebook Current
Report, 2012), three main ones can be identified: for
contact, information, and fun.
The first cause is to keep in touch with friends and
families. Social networking sites allow individuals to
maintain connection with each other. They also help
maintain relations as people move from one offline
community to another. (Ellision, Steinfield& Lampe,
2007). People can search by conditions to find friends
whom they lost touch with. Secondly, friending can
bring many information resources. Instead of other
methods such as phone calls and newspapers, Friending
is the most easy and fast way to gain useful information,
which could have strong payoffs in terms of jobs,
internships, and other opportunities (Ellision,
Steinfield& Lampe, 2007). For example, if a person
would like to get a job in certain company, friending an
employee working in it will be a good start to know the
company better and deeper. The third one is
entertainment purpose. Friending is fun, especially for
the undergraduates. Through chatting and sharing
interesting information, they can get relaxation as well as
satisfaction, which make social networking site an
indispensable part in their entertainment life.
Behind the trend of friending in today’s campus
life, the three purposes 6
Friending, a new word created for the act of adding virtual accounts to friend list on social networking sites, is
a different way of making friends from the traditional one. As one of the most popular uses of social media, it is
faster and simpler. It also offers more opportunities and choices of friends who they may never encounter in their
lifetime. With these changes, the intimacy between friends has decreased. People also question undergraduates’
ability of offline socializing. However, online friendship still develops through communication between one and
another. There are two types of friending. One is actual friends, which can continuingly classified into friends
people know in their real life and strangers. The other type is virtual friends including organizational friends and
public pages. No matter which type of friends people add to their friends list, the main three reasons for doing
friending are for contact, information and entertainment.
To become a friending expert with a long friend list on his facebook, you need to know how to add friends on
facebook first. There are only three simple steps that are logging in account, finding potential friends, and
making friend request. If you do not have an account, you will have to set up a new account before all these steps.
As we see the changes that social media makes in our contact and relationship with the rest of the world, this
new way requires undergraduates to be more responsible for their behavior in making friends.
