On a class trip to the seashore, Callie and Tina
searched for shells and rocks on the beach. Callie found
an old glass soda bottle in the sand.
“Look at this,” Callie said as she picked up the bottle.
“There’s something in it.”
“Probably a worm,” Tina said.
“No, it’s a note,” Callie replied, digging the muddy
paper out of the bottle.
“It says it’s a map to an unbelievable treasure,” Callie
explained. “‘Go to the center of City Park and face away
from the sun. Take 200 long steps straight ahead and
then turn left and take 35 short steps. Climb the stairs.
Straight ahead, you will find great treasure.’”
The next Saturday, Callie and Tina asked Callie’s
mother to take them to City Park. They excitedly followed
the directions in the note. After climbing the stairs, they
stopped suddenly, quite surprised. Before them was a
beautiful building.
“It’s City Library,” Callie’s mother said.
“I’ve never been here,” said Tina.
“The treasure must be in the things you can learn from
books,” said Callie as she and Tina raced up the library’s
steps.
