Lesson 70 – 1 Samuel 16–17

Outward Appearances

Samuel needs to find a replacement for King Saul

• He has overstepped his bounds (3 times) and has been “rejected” by the Lord.

• 1 Samuel 16:1• The new king will be the son of Jesse from

Bethelehem.• Do you remember who Jesse is? (Ruth 4:21-22)– Ruth and Boaz’s grandson

• Why does the Lord never just come out and say who the next King will be?

• There is a lesson to be learned…

1 Samuel 16:6-7

• What is the lesson?

• Why the heart?

The Heart

• What does the heart mean today?– Love– Emotion– Feeling

• What did it mean back then?– Center– Whole– Spirit of a man

Goliath

• How big is he?– 1 cubit = 18 inches– 1 span = 9 inches

• Let’s play this out– 1 Samuel 17:4, 8-11– 1 Samuel 17:32-37– 1 Samuel 17:40-51

Outward Appearances

• Think of King Saul and his “goodly” appearance.

• Think of Goliath and his appearance.• Think of David. Why would Saul even let him

go?• What better way to teach the people that

anyone can achieve great things? that the Lord doesn’t care about the outside?

Notebook Ideas

• What Goliaths might you face in your life? How does the story of David help you to face and defeat them?

• How can you improve your “heart” (the “heart” the Lord looketh on)? What are some “heart healthy activities” you could do in your daily life?
