Poverty Level in Asia

• Understand the relationship between human development and poverty in Asia

• Give an assessment of the Asian population based on gender, literacy, life expectancy, income, composition, etc.

• Recognize the importance of having a high literacy rate in a country.

• Analyze the relationship between economic development and human resources of Asian countries.

• Reflect on the effects and how people could contribute to the alleviation of poverty especially in the Philippines.

• Income poverty– Basis of poverty:

• per capita expenditure necessary to attain 2,000 to 2,500 calories per day

• According to the World Bank– Basis: International poverty line

• Poverty not measured in terms of economics alone.Definition expanded:

• Basic needs were taken into consideration• Exploitation of certain sectors of society

• Discrimination• Inequalities between men and women• Lack of opportunity to express opinion

• Lack of voice in the decision making processes
