Chapter 1
Introduction Inleiding
This is joint work, started by me in 1980
for the Wegge name, helped along by my
brother Jozef (Jos) Wegge and my daugh-
ter Simone Wegge for our maternal De Mayer
name. Jos Wegge, the son of my father’s un-
cle Alfons Wegge from Reet, helped through
Leo Vermeulen, in getting dates and names
of Aartselaar notaries in the nineteenth cen-
tury.
naam De Maeyer langs moederzijde. Jos

Chapter 2
Wegge Family Tree
2.0.1 The name Wegge De naam Wegge.
This interesting and unusual surname,
with variant spelling Wegg, Wege and Wegge,
is of Anglo-Saxon origin, i.e. from the 5th
to 10th century language of the Germanic
tribes, the Angles, Lower Saxons and Jutes,
and may derive from two possible origins.
Firstly, it may be of topographical origin,
describing someone who lived on a wedge-
shaped (i.e. triangular) piece of land from the
Olde English pre 7th Century word ”wecg”
and Middle English word ”wegge”, meaning
wedge. Secondly, from ? we condense:
betekent. Tweedens uit ? vatten we samen:

5
A. The noun ”wegge”, also written wege,
wegh, wedge, wagge, vegge in Middle En-
glish, wig in Dutch, wegge in Danish, vigg in
Swedish, wecki in Old High German, weck,
wecke=a kind of wedge-shaped loaf in Ger-
man, wig= a kind of cake in English, is of
unknown origin.?
But ”wegge” has been used in late me-
dieval English writings to mean:
1a). an instrument or tool to split rock or
wood (1350)
1b). a piece of wood to hold open a cleft
in the stock of a tree for the graft of a scion
(Agri. 1400)
1c). a pin, peg, nail, cleat 1450)
2. a troop formation in wedge form (1425)
3. a coin, a formed piece of gold or silver
(1400).
B. The verb ”wegge” meaning to force into
place, to tighten, (to?) weggen, is recorded
from the middle of the 15th century.
C. A ”Wedge Issue” is attested to only from
1999.
A. Het naamwoord ”wegge”, ook geschreven
wege, wegh, wedge, wagge, vegge in Midden
Engels, wig in Nederlands, wegge in Deens,
vigg in Zweeds, wecki in Oud Hoog Duits,
goud of zilver (1400).
B. Als werkwoord betekent ”wegge” op zijn
plaats dwingen, vast binden, en is zo gebruikt
sinds de 15de eeuw in Engeland.
C. Het naamwoord ”Wedge Issue” is pas
ontstaan in 1999 en blijft onvertaald.
6 CHAPTER 2. WEGGE FAMILY TREE
The first recorded spelling of Wegge as
family name is shown to be that of John
Wegge, which was dated 1328 in ?, during
the reign of King Edward III, known as The
Father of the Navy, 1327 - 1377. Surnames
became necessary when governments intro-
duced personal taxation. In England this was
known as a Poll Tax. Throughout the cen-
turies, surnames in every country have con-
tinued to ”develop” often leading to aston-
ishing variants of the original spelling. Read

ilienaam by John Wegge, geconstateerd in
Zeemacht, 1327-1377. Het gebruik van fam-
ilienamen is nodig wanneer de regering per-
soonsbelasting invoert, Poll Tax genoemd in
Engeland.

As in English, in medieval Netherlands
the name wegge means a loaf of bread in the
form of a wedge. This is also the connec-
tion in English between wegge and wedge.
French speaking people are bound to pro-
nounce the name as ”wedge” or some English
speakers say ”wedgie?”, while in the USA I
always insisted that my name rhymes with
”Peggy”. Actually the name in Flanders and
especially in Holland is spoken with soft ”gg”
in the back of the throat while debreathing
air, not with a harsh hacking ”gg” holding
your breath and the letter ”e” at the end is
mute and not the ”y” in Peggy.
Zoals in Engels betekent wegge in mid-
In de Verenigde Staten be-

It is amusing to discover that first and
family names were spelled differently not only
during the Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and Re-
naissance times, but in Belgium also later in
the seventeenth through the twentieth cen-
tury for different poltical reasons. Remem-
ber that Belgium’s administrative language
itself went through different episodes, Latin
in the parish baptismal, marriage and death
documents, French in the French Revolution
period 1791-1815, Dutch in the union with
the Netherlands 1815-1831, back to French in
the Belgian administration after 1831, even-
tually slowly converging to Nederlands in
the North today. The spoken language in
the North always was and is mostly Flem-
ish developed since Anglo-Saxon origins. On
the other hand the language in my father’s
1920 teacher education still was French and,
according to my brother Jos, my maternal
grandfather flunked his junior high class be-
cause of insufficient French speaking ability,
given that only local Flemish was spoken at
home.
A summary description of the Wegge tree
running backwards in time follows on the
next page. At the bottom it starts in Reet
from the 17th century until 1865 when my
grandfather Ludovicus (Louis) moved out of
Gedenk
dat de administratieve taal zelf door ver-
schillende perioden is gegaan, Latijn in de
parochie doopsel, huwelijk en overlijden doc-
umenten, Frans in de Franse Revolutie jaren
1791-1815, Nederlands en Frans in de Unie
der Nederlanden 1815-1831, terug Frans in de
Belgische Administratie na 1831, uiteindelijk
langzaam convergerend naar Nederlands in
het Noorden vandaag. The spraaktaal in het
Anglo-Saxon bron. Maar de taal in de 1920
leermeester opvoeding van mijn vader was
Frans en volgens mijn broer Jos, mijn groot-
vader langs moederszijde mocht zijn junior
middelbare schooling niet verder zetten we-
gens onvoldoende Frans sprekende begaafd-
heid. Thuis sprak men plaatselijk Vlaams.
Op de volgende bladzijde staat een
samenvattende lijst van de Wegge Reeks met
de tijd achteruit lopend. De lijst begint bene-
den in Reet in de 17de eeuw tot in 1865 wan-

2.3.1 Looking up Family Trees Op zoek naar Reeksen
Up to now the family tree has been con-
structed from collective living memory and
from private and newspaper announcements.
Unfortunately many items in that collective
memory have been lost because of my ab-
sence from Belgium and the fact that this
project was only started in 1980. Very use-
ful official documents are copies of the Cen-
sus organized by the 1831 Belgian State be-
ginning with the 1840-41 Census, as well as
the documents of the Civil State (Burgerli-
jke Stand) in each community with records of
Births, Marriages and Deaths. Unfortunately
not all are open to the Public. In particular,
dates reaching into the 20th century are not
open to the public and they are released only
after a long period of time, perhaps a cen-
tury, to protect their privacy. Future readers
of this document will be able to fill in the
missing dates when the archives release more
recent information.
When approaching the 18th century we
leave the Belgian State. For a while from
1815-1831 the region was administered by the
Dutch under Willem I. Before that in 1789-
1815 Napoleon and the French ran the coun-
try and before that the main sources of infor-
mation are parish
Tot nog toe is de stamboom opgesteld
van ons collectief familie geheugen dat gebor-
gen ligt in private of aankondigingen in kran-
ten. Spijtig zijn vele details in dat collec-
tieve geheugen verloren gegaan wegens mijn
project begon in 1980. Zeer nuttige officiele
14 CHAPTER 2. WEGGE FAMILY TREE
Baptism, Marriage and Obituary registers.
With my grandfather Ludovicus emigrating
to Breendonk from Reet, we have to consult
the parish records of Reet where he was born.
My grandfather’s family composition is
described in the Census documents of the
Belgian State, but his ancestors have to be
researched in the Reet parish registers. Some
parishes kept good records but some records
perished in church fires. Or records are or al-
ways were illegible when they were kept in at-
tics or in the tower where the ink turned into
messy blots because of the humidity. In Bel-
gium the practice of keeping parish records
did not take off before 1600 and is still sparse
before 1700. The French Revolution has been
damaging. During this period the language
is French, the calender is the Revolutionary
and all priests must turn in their registers.
11 Reet registers were so bad that
the secretary, church custodian, organist
schoolteacher Joannes C. Vermeylen on re-
quest of the municipal council began to tran-
scribe the most important baptismal regis-
ters. The 11 original records have been burnt
between the 2 world wars just to clean the
secretary’s files. Many Reet years are missing
in and between 1619-52, 1683-92, May-June
Doopsel, Huwelijk en Overlijden registers.
Wat betekent dat we Breendonk verlaten en
in Reet moeten gaan zoeken dat mijn groot-
vader aan vaderszijde had verlaten.
De Census beschrijft de familie van mijn
grootvader, maar feiten over zijn voorzaten
zullen moeten gevonden worden in parochie
boeken van Reet. Sommige parochies hielden
parochieboeken was weinig bekend in Belgie
moesten hun boeken inleveren.
11 Reet registers waren zo slecht dat
de secretaris, kerk bewaarder, organist
schoolmeester Joannes C. Vermeylen, op ver-
zoek van de gemeenteraad, de meest belangri-
jke doopsel registers begon te overschrijven.
De oorspronkelijke registers werden verbrand
tussen de twee wereldoorlogen alleen maar
om de bureelkasten van de secretaris proper
te maken. De Reet boeken in 1619-52, 1683-
92, Mei-June 1702 etc., zijn er niet meer.
2.4. CORNELIS WEGGE-VLOEBERGH 1813-1892 15
1702, etc.. Leo Vermeylen has reconstructed
birth, marriage, death books alphabetically
by name for a few years. These are called
”klappers” and exist partly in most commu-
nities thanks to a lot of volunteer work. Klap-
pers are very useful in family tree research.
Leo Vermeylen herschreef doopsel, huwelijk
en overlijden boeken voor sommige jaren
bij naam. Die worden klappers genoemd
en bestaan gedeeltelijk voor meest andere
parochies dank zij het vrijwillige werk van
vele burgers. Die zijn zeer nuttig in stam-
boom onderzoek.

16 CHAPTER 2. WEGGE FAMILY TREE
Generation 4 is the family of my great-
grandfather Cornelis Wegge who had lived
with his uncle Petrus Adriaan during most
of his life, as a farm laborer servant. Petrus
Adriaan was a wealthy farmer who became
mayor of Reet but all his children died.
Petrus Adriaan had an older brother Jean
Baptiste, the father of Cornelis. They had
agreed to divide their father’s properties with
a brewery/farm in Aartselaar to Jean Bap-
tiste and the Reet Schanshoeve to Petrus
Adriaan. Since the latter had no children
he made his brother’s oldest son Cornelis the
”adopted” son to run the farm. Census data
report that Cornelis was a servant (knecht) in
Petrus Adriaan’s household. It is interesting
to observe that eventually the Schanshoeve
goes back to the oldest of the oldest but the
catalyst mayor of the town Petrus Adriaan
owner of the farm is not in the direct line.
Cornelis married rather late in life at age
47. He was married two times, with his first
wife Marie Swiggers from Keerbergen living
1837-1862. His second wife from Wilrijk lived
1835-1918 and died in Brecht were her son
Karel was the pastor. As you see my pater-
nal grandfather Ludovicus was the oldest but
he had 5 younger brothers and a sister.
was. Hij trouwde twee maal. Zijn eerste
vrouw stierf in 1962 en staat opgeschreven als
meid op de Schanshoeve. Het is niet klaar of
zijn tweede vrouw 1835-1918 ook als meid is
begonnen. Zij is de moeder van de kinderen
en stierf in Brecht waar haar zoon Karel pas-
toor was.
2.4. CORNELIS WEGGE-VLOEBERGH 1813-1892 17
From all indications my grandfather may
have eloped just before the death of his fa-
ther. I always thought that he left his home-
stead to marry the daughter of a small farmer
in Breendonk because, given the young age
of his mother and of his siblings, he did not
hope to be the chosen successor. Perhaps his
family did not trust that he had the required
skills to well manage the Schanshoeve. In
any event after Cornelis’ death, the farm was
eventually transferred to his brother Joseph
(Jef) who became the successor farmer. The
rule of succession to the oldest is broken in
my grandfather.
Among the sons of Cornelis we see the
pursuit of occupations outside farming, Al-
fons a Reet school teacher, Petrus a Terha-
gen secretary also organist, Karel a priest
and Frans a business person in the port of
Antwerp, all this in the second half of the
nineteenth century. Among all these uncle
pastoor was the most beloved, most active
to strenghten the family connections. My
brother Jos and I have known uncle pastoor
very well and met all his brothers. Uncle pas-
toor organized family reunions when he was
the parish priest, as in Vorselaar and in Reet,
where he returned to in retirement. Uncle
pastoor was the star of the family,

In ieder
Marie trouwde in
de gebuur familie Vermeylen en Constantine
werd meid in de pastorijen van Karel. Onder
al dezen was nonkel pastoor de meest geliefde
en actief in het versterken van familieverban-
den.

concern for anybody, especially those named

Petrus Adrianus’s farmhouse and sur-
rounding land was known as the ”Schan-
shoeve”, originally acquired by his father
Cornelius in 1801. Schans means a forest of
branches, a land fortification, a moat with
trees around it. During the 1790 Boer Wars
the resisting farmers used the farm as a hid-
ing place. In fact ”Schans” is derived from
the Flemish ”verschansen”, meaning to hide
oneself. In addition to the Schanshoeve,
De boerderij van Petrus Adrianus en het
omliggende land stond bekend als de Schan-
shoeve, oorspronkelijk in het bezit gekomen
van zijn vader Cornelius in 1801. Schans
betekent een takken bos, een land versterk-
ing, een wal met bomen omringd. Gedurende
de 1790 Boerenkrijgsjaren gebruikten de
boeren de hoeve als een verbergingsoord. In
feite ”Schans” is afgeleid van het Vlaamse
”verschansen”, zich verbergen.

20 CHAPTER 2. WEGGE FAMILY TREE
This is the household of uncle Petrus
Adrianus after his wife had died in 1853 and
Cornelius Josephus, already 40 years old, had
to be pressured to find a wife to manage the
household. Without a woman, Petrus, Cor-
nelis and the 3 permanent servants must have
had household problems. They had no maids
in the period 1856 to 1860 until he married
his wife Marie Swiggers in 1860.
She brought in members of her family as
servants and maids between 1860-1862 and
she had her first baby Theresia Isabella in
1861. Unfortunately, on the 8th of Septem-
ber 1962 she died at the young age of 25 and
all her relatives left.
De Census geeft de Schanshoeve bewoners
aan met Petrus Adrianus weduwnaar na het
overlijden van zijn vrouw in 1853. Cornelius
vaste knechten grote problemen.
Swiggers trouwde in 1860.
haar eerste kind Theresia Isabella in 1961.
Ongelukkiglijk zij stierf op jonge 25 jarige
leeftijd op 8 september 1962 en al haar fam-
ilie helpers verlieten ook de Schanshoeve.
The Schanshoeve was again without fe-
male help in the household with a baby un-
til Cornelis found his second wife Catherine
Vloebergh in 1863. She became the mother of
all the children of Generation 4. The young
Wegge-Swiggers daughter Theresia Isabella
died in 1868.

nelis zijn tweede vrouw Catherine Vloebergh

kinderen in Generatie 4. The jonge Wegge-
Swiggers dochter stierf in 1868.

2.4.4 Generation 5 Agreement Overeenkomst 1869
Uncle Petrus Adrianus also died in 1868
and the 5 children of his brother Cornelius,
Maria, Petrus, Joanna and Franciscus are
his heirs. They met in the Schanshoeve
with Aartselaar Notary Hermans to sign their
agreement, registered in Contich Jan. 14,
1869, part 116, p.14, vak 5.
1) Maria, Petrus, Joanna, Franciscus sell
the Reet Schanshoeve of 10ha 59a 15ca=26.5
acres plus the leased ground of 32a 83ca=.82
acre in Boom, to Cornelius for 24,000 francs,
who also pays 2,000 francs towards notary
costs.
2) Cornelius, Maria, Petrus, Joanna agree
to sell a farm and house of 3 ha. 0 a. 50
ca. = 7.5 acres for 6,400 francs to Franciscus
Leonardus, who also pays 1200 Francs toward
notary costs.
3) The registrar received 1750.32 Francs
for the payment and increase of the registra-
tion rights.
This agreement among the siblings seem-
ingly meets the moral principle of equality
among siblings. Nevertheless, uncle Petrus
in his testament defined the assets to be in-
herited in such a way that the reasons for his

en de 5 kinderen van zijn broer Cornelius,
Maria, Petrus, Joanna en Franciscus zijn
de erfgenamen. Op de ”Schanshoeve” met
Aartselaar notaris Hermans ondertekenden
zij hun overeenkomst, geregistreerd in Kon-
tich Jan.14,1869, gedeelte 116, blz.14, vak 5.
1) Maria, Petrus, Joanna, Franciscus
verkopen de Reet Schanshoeve van 10ha 59a
15ca=26.5 acres plus de verhuurde grond van
32a 83ca=.82 acre in Boom, aan Cornelius
voor 24,000 franken, die ook 2,000 franken
betaalt aan notaris kosten.
2) Cornelius, Maria, Petrus, Joanna
verkopen een boerderij met hoeve van 3ha 0a
50ca=7.5 acres for 6,400 franken aan Francis-
cus Leonardus, die ook 1200 franken betaalt
aan notaris kosten.
3) De registraar ontving 1750.32 franken
ter betaling en verhoging van de registratie
rechten.
Deze overeenkomst is ogenschijnlijk con-
sistent met het morele principe van gelijke
verdeling tussen de erfgenamen van dezelfde
graad. Maar het testament van nonkel Petrus
omschrijft de erfenis stukken met condities
die zijn reden om sommigen

2.4.5 Uncle Petrus’s Testament Testament Nonkel Petrus 1863
In 1863 Uncle Mayor Petrus made his tes-
tament, shortly after he stepped down from
City Hall and 5 months after the second mar-
riage of his nephew Cornelius Josephus who
lived with him. He went to Notary Hermans
in Aartselaar to dictate his wishes the 6th Oc-
tober 1863, registered as part 112, folio 9870,
case ..6.z fol 98 vak 1 a 6.
i) To God I command my soul. I want to be
buried in the Reet cemetery with a first class
funeral mass, with one hectoliter baked corn
bread distributed to the poor attending the
service and with a twenty kilogram candle lit
before the statue of Our Lady.
For six weeks a sung mass shall be cele-
brated with one hectoliter baked corn bread
distributed to the poor attending the mass.
During one year there will be one sung
mass every week and three hundred requiem
masses shall be offered to save my soul at 1.50
franc per mass.
Nonkel Burgemeester Petrus maakte zijn
testament in 1863 kortelings nadat hij zijn
functie als burgemeester beeindigd had en
5 maanden na dat zijn neef Cornelius
hertrouwd was.

i) Ik beveel mijn ziel aan God. Ik wil be-
Gedurende

francs per mass. That on Sundays a prayer
be said and finally, that on the anniversary
of my death every year 12 francs be paid to
the Poverty Council, money to be used to
distribute corn bread to the poor. To en-
sure that my perpetual foundation and legacy
continue, the notary shall inform the Parish

and Catharina Vloebergh his wife, all my
movable assets, including animals, funiture,
crops in the fields or in the barn, my money,

Catherina Wegge the sum of 1200 francs. I
also give to Cornelius and Catharina Vloe-

durende schenking en legaat, de notaris zal
de Parochieraad inlichten en zal het haar
geschonken land hypothekeren.
mobiele bezittingen, inclusief dieren, meube-

tion I give them half of the rent in a pasture in
Boom of 32a 3ca = .81 acre, for 35 years. The

Cornelis Josephus is mijn uitvoerder.
2.5. JEAN BAPTISTE WEGGE-DE SCHUTTER 1785-1870 25
Apparently Uncle Petrus Adriaan owned
a total of 18 ha = 45 acres. Out of a to-
tal of 7.2 ha=18 acres, 1.3 ha went to the
Parish Council, 3.5 ha to Leonardus Wegge
and 2.4 ha to his wife’s family. The remain-
ing 10.8 ha=27 acres is the land area of my
greatgrandfather Cornelis’s ”Schanshoeve”.
Blijkbaar was Nonkel Petrus Adriaan
eigenaar van in het totaal 18ha=45 acres. UIt
is de ”Schanshoeve” land oppervlakte eigen-
dom van mijn overgrootvader Cornelis.

Aartselaar where he ran the family’s farm
and brewery. All the children are born in
Aartselaar. When the brewery did not turn
into a huge success he returned to Reet to
run a small farm. His younger brother Petrus
Adriaan in their partition agreement in 1821
had chosen for the big ”Schanshoeve” farm in
Reet. To that place our family tree returns
with Cornelius Josephus in 1869.
The youngest brother Franciscus Leonar-
dus seems to have been a traveller, also resid-
ing in Paris for a while. But he returned to
Reet to have his own farm, apparently helped
in the effort by his uncle Petrus Adriaan who
gifted him a homestead with 3.5 ha of land.
Looking over the the years of birth, we are
right in the middle of the Dutch Administra-
tion of Belgium (1815-31) and Dutch mea-
sures of lenghth and area are in use. We
are also at the end of the French Revolution
period (1789-1915) during which everything
was changing, from church to administration
to language to calendar. In the segment that
follows use is made of the Dutch metric sys-
tem.
ilie bestuurde. Al zijn kinderen zijn geboren
in Aartselaar.
jongere broer Petrus Adriaan in hun erfe-
nis overeenkomst van 1821 had voor de Reet
”Schanshoeve” gekozen. Zoals gezien, tot die
hoeve keert onze stamboom terug met Cor-
nelius Josephus in 1869.
jvend in Parijs.
ha schenkte in 1869, zoals geschreven staat
ender. In de volgende akte het Nederlandse
metriek systeem is gebruikt.
2.5. JEAN BAPTISTE WEGGE-DE SCHUTTER 1785-1870 27
2.5.1 Generation 6 Agreement Overeenkomst 1822
Our paternal greatgrandgrandfather Cor-
nelius Wegge died in 1821 leaving his prop-
erty undivided. The two brothers Jean Bap-
tiste and Petrus Adriaan signed a parti-
tion accord before Notary Eliaers on April
22, 1822. They declared that after deduc-
tion of the borrowed capital of 4,500 Dutch
Guilders, the community property is worth
10,070 Dutch Guilders.
Onze overgrootgrootvader Cornelius
Wegge died in 1821 zonder zijn eigendom-
men te verdelen. DE twee gebroers Jean
Baptiste en Petrus Adriaan tekenden een
verdelingsakkoord in het kantoor van Notaris
Eliaers op april 22, 1822. Zij verklaardendat
na aftrek van het geleende capitaal van 4,500
Nederlandse Gulden, de gemeenschappelijke
eigendom heeft een waarde van 10,070 Ned-
erlandse Gulden.
Jean Baptiste in anticipation of succes-
sion had intention to buy the farm house,
land and brewery together with the furniture,
all animals, etc. in Aartselaar for the sum of
6,000 Dutch guilders. They also have found
300 guilders in cash in the house. There-
fore the total inheritance is valued at 16,370
guilders or 8,580 guilders per person. To ar-
rive at the partition the brothers have formed
the following bundles.
Bundle A consists of a farmhouse, stables,
barns, garden, tillable land of 7 bunderen,
275 roeden or 10 bunders 11 roeden 76 ellen
in Dutch measures, situated in Reet, neigh-
boring east to Dellafaille and Cornelius Ver-
schueren, south to C. Verschueren and If van
Reet, west to the heirs S. Van Rompaey,
6,000 gulden. Er waren ook 300 gulden in
geld gevonden in het huis. Zodus heeft de to-
tale erfenis een waarde van 16,370 gulden of
8,580 gulden per persoon. Om tot verdeling
te komen zijn de volgende bundels gevormd.
Bundel A bestaat uit een hoeve, stallen,
schuren, hoven, ploegbaar land groot 7 bun-
deren 275 roeden of 10 bunderen 11 roeden 76
28 CHAPTER 2. WEGGE FAMILY TREE
P. Trappesaen and Joannes Antonius Ronge
and north to Cornelius De Keyser and
Joannes Antonius Ronge. This farm was ac-
quired by their parents, from the children
of the late Joannes Baptista De Weerdt and
Maria Francisca Spillemaekers, in a public
auction finalized by Eliaers, our father’s no-
tary, around January 13, 1801 (24 Nivose
year 8), registered in Antwerp on January 16,
1801. This farm is brought in this accord at
the value of 10,285 guilders and is the guar-
antee for the mortgage of 4,500 guilders.
More pieces of land were assigned to Bun-
dle A but I cannot figure it out from the no-
tary act of April 28, 1822. The deal is that
Jean Baptiste stays in Aartselaar to run a
farm with brewery and the younger brother
Petrus Adriaan runs de Schanshoeve Farm.
All indications are that Petrus Adriaan
enlarged the farm by acquiring neighboring
lots during his lifetime also through auctions
originating from sales of property sold by the
orphan court. The measurements stated in
their partititon agreement do not quite match
with the later measurements. According to
the Dutch metric system adopted at this time
in 1817 equates 1 bunder = 1 ha, (square) rod
= 1 a. and 1 el= 1 ca. If this is followed here
then the area of the farm under Bundle A
(24 Nivose jaar 8), geregistreerd in Antwer-
Schanshoeve in Reet.
wezengerecht. De maten die in het verdel-
ingsakkoord staan komen niet precies overeen
met de latere maten. Volgens het Ned-
erlandse metriek systeem toepasselijk vanaf
1817 is 1 bunder=1 ha., een (square) rod =

above would be 10.1176 ha which is about the
size of the 1868 Cornelis Josephus farm but
far less than the 1863 Petrus Adriaan prop-
erties of 18 ha.
To have some impression of the monetary
values consider that 1000 guilders in the year
1822 was for our 1822 ancestors equivalent
to 3.6 yearly wages of an unskilled worker.
This roughly corresponds to USD 101943.78
today.
Thousand guilders in the year 1869 was
for our 1869 ancestor equivalent to 3.2 yearly
wages of an unskilled worker, roughly equal
to USD 91,475.23 today. Therefore, a Schan-
shoeve of 10 ha. in 1822 was worth approx-
imately USD 1,020,000, that is USD 40,000

This is the family of the grand-
father of Cornelius Joseph, my great-
grandgrandfather Cornelius, who acquired
substantial real estate in the period of the
French Revolutionary wars, with the Schan-
shoeve acquired in 1801. There are questions
here which I cannot formulate completely.
For one reason because I have not been
able to read and understand the notary act
describing the 1822 partition accord com-
pletely. For another I do not know how

2.6. CORNELIUS WEGGE-DE ROECK 1739-1821 31
or when the Aartselaar brewery came into
existence. Most likely Cornelius starts the
farm/brewery operation in Aartselaar and he
sends his oldest son Jean Baptiste to oper-
ate it. This would explain that all children of
Jean Baptiste are born in Aartselaar and that
the farm/brewery still is Cornelius’ property
to be divided between the two children. This
and the Schanshoeve are the two main assets
that the brothers had to choose among.
The table tells the story of the many sor-
rows from child mortality in the Cornelius-De
Roeck family. Only the two brothers Jean
Baptiste and Pierre Adrianus reached adult
life and both lived through the war years
and the local Boer War (Boerenkrijg) of the
seventeen nineties. Economically speaking a
farmer makes good money in the days of war
if he can bring his harvest to the market. It
is well known that even Britain had problems
with how to pay for food before and after Wa-
terloo 1815. This is a most interesting period
to ask the question to what extent Cornelius
managed to do well as a farmer in this pe-
riod remembering that he bought the Schan-
shoeve in 1801. It is known from other notary
acts that he obtained loans from well-to-do
neighbors to pay for some of his buys. But
he must have paid most of it from his farm
income.
wanneer de Aartselaar brouwerij tot stand
kwam. Zeer waarschijnlijk began vader Cor-
nelius. Dit en de Schanshoeve zijn de twee
voornaamste bezittingen waarover de broed-
ers beslissen.
De Generatie 6 lijst vertelt van het ver-
driet in de Cornelius Wegge-De Roeck fam-
ilie door kinderen mortaliteit. Alleen de
twee broeders Jean Baptiste en Pierre Adri-
anus bereiken volwassen leeftijd en beide leef-
den gedurende de oorlogsjaren en de plaat-
selijke Boerenkrijg van de 1790s. In oor-

2.6. CORNELIUS WEGGE-DE ROECK 1739-1821 33
2.6.3 The Parish Registers
We are now in a difficult transition period
to find family tree information. The French
wanted to start their own documentation of
births, marriages and deaths forbidding the
parish priest to continue the practice exist-
ing prior to 1791. They never could complete
this because the time of their occupation be-
tween 1791-1815 was too short. This was fol-
lowed with the Dutch occupation 1815-1831
and their efforts to establish an administra-
tion to their liking. I hope to get back to the
primary information sources of this period,
especially notary acts, to deepen my under-
standing of the events.
We now enter the century where most
documentation is to be found in the registers
written by parish priests in a society where
a majority of the population does not write.
The communication between priest and the
people is limited and the recorder often has to
guess how what is being communicated is to
be written e.g. Wegge is written in many dif-
ferent ways. From now on all announcements
are rather mechanical and written in Latin.
In the case of Reet I have used the sum-
mary alphabetical lists called ”Klappers”, of
births, marriages, deaths. The ”Wegge” rel-
evant pages are these.
schrijft.

There is a Petrus Wegge born to Cornelius
Petrus and Wouters Elisabeth on October 2,
1622. This is the earliest recorded birth and
fits in with the either ninth generation. This
would be the tenth generation. The or Gen-
eration 9 can be ruled out if Petrus’s birth-
date is 1670 and not 1669.
generatie. Dat zou de tiende generatie zijn.
De negende or generatie can uitgesloten wor-
den als Petrus inderdaad geboren was in 1670
en niet in 1669.

name of his parents Petrus Wegge-Wouters,
but nothing else.
Petrus Wegge of Generatie 7 is the laat-
ste Wegge in mijn familie officieel gereg-
