Evangelize

26 Now an angel of the Lord said toPhilip, “Go south to the road—thedesert road—that goes down fromJerusalem to Gaza.”

27 So he started out, and on his way hemet an Ethiopian eunuch, an importantofficial in charge of all the treasury ofthe Kandake (which means “queen ofthe Ethiopians”). This man had gone toJerusalem to worship,

28 and on his way home was sitting inhis chariot reading the Book of Isaiahthe prophet.

29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go to thatchariot and stay near it.”

30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot andheard the man reading Isaiah theprophet. “Do you understand what youare reading?” Philip asked.

31 “How can I,” he said, “unlesssomeone explains it to me?” So heinvited Philip to come up and sit withhim.

32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”

35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

36 As they traveled along the road, theycame to some water and the eunuchsaid, “Look, here is water. What canstand in the way of my beingbaptized?”

[37] Philip said, “If you believe with allyour heart, you may.” The eunuchanswered, “I believe that Jesus Christ isthe Son of God.”

38 And he gave orders to stop thechariot. Then both Philip and theeunuch went down into the water andPhilip baptized him.

39 When they came up out of thewater, the Spirit of the Lord suddenlytook Philip away, and the eunuch didnot see him again, but went on hisway rejoicing.

40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotusand traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

RIPENING AVOCADO

People becoming Christians is like a harvest, and that people becoming Christians, they’re

like fruit.

What we see in the physical world is true in the spiritual world.

We can’t make something ripe. It’s going to take time. We can’t make

someone ripe for Jesus. It’s going to take time.

We see here what it’s like to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to

evangelize.

When we talk about evangelism, we’re talking about this as a Christian talks

to a non-Christian about Jesus.

The most important thing, more important than anything, more

important than everything is that you know Jesus.

Jesus got a plan to seek you, to serve you, and to save you. Not because

you’re great, but because He is great.

Jesus got a plan to seek you, to serve you, and to save you. Not because

you’re great, but because He is great.

WHOM HAS GOD PUT IN FRONT OF YOU?

26 Now an angel of the Lord said toPhilip, “Go south to the road—thedesert road—that goes down fromJerusalem to Gaza.”

Our God is a supernatural God. Our God is a capable God. Our God is a living God.

Our God is a miraculous God.

Our God is a creative God. He sends an angel to Philip, tells Philip,

“You’ve got to go somewhere. You’ve got something to do.”

THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH:

A GREEN APPLE TURNING RED

23 No one who has been

emasculated by crushing or cutting

may enter the assembly of the LORD.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet

he did not open his mouth; he was led

like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a

sheep before its shearers is silent, so

he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he wastaken away. Yet who of his generationprotested? For he was cut off from theland of the living; for thetransgression of my people he waspunished.

He is a green apple turning red. God’s working on him.

God’s preparing him for the message of Jesus.

MEETING PHILIP

THE SPIRIT-FILLED EVANGELIST

Philip was a Godly guy, filled with the Holy Spirit, loves Jesus, missionary, minister, he’s an evangelist. There’s

one person there that God loves. That God loves one person enough that he had put together an entire plan to go

get that one person.

And friends, if you’re here and you’re not a Christian, you’re one of those

people that Jesus loves so much that he has been pursuing and preparing

you because he wants you to become a Christian too.

8 Leaving the next day, we reached

Caesarea and stayed at the house of

Philipthe evangelist, one of the Seven.

9 He had four unmarried daughters

who prophesied.

#1GOD USESPEOPLETO SAVE PEOPLE

We can speak, we can serve, but only God can save. We don’t save anybody.

Philip is not going to save this guy, forgive his sin, give him access to the presence of God for all eternity. That’s not his responsibility. His responsibility

is to speak and to serve. God uses people to save people.

There are lots of people in closed Muslim countries who are getting

saved because they’re having dreams about Jesus or an angel shows up because God will jump over any

obstacle that is set against the gospel to bring the good news of Jesus to

those who don’t know him.

But oftentimes, God works through his people. So, God sends the angel to

Philip, and then the angel sends Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch.

If you’re a Christian, you’re the beloved sons and daughters of God. God can save people without you, but he’s invited you

and I to be part of his process. And we can speak, and we can serve, and we can

watch Him save, and then we share in his joy, and we learn a lot about our Father as

we see Him saving sinners.

#2 YOU DON’T

ALWAYS HAVE TO EARN THE RIGHT TO BE

HEARD

It says that the Holy Spirit spoke to Philip and the Holy Spirit’s overseeing the process. Jesus said early on, at

Acts 1:8 “You’ll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. You’ll be

my witnesses to the ends of the earth.”

THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOWS UP TO SPEAK

The good news of Jesus is getting out to the nations of the earth through the person, the presence, the power of the

Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God, and the Holy Spirit is not just a force, He is a

person. He doesn’t inhabit a physical body, but He has feelings, He has a

will, and He can communicate with us. He is God.

He can be grieved, He can be resisted, He can be quenched, the Bible says.

He’s God, and He is not an impersonal force, He is a personal God.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with

you.

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom

the Father will send in my name, will teach

you all things and will remind you of

everything I have said to you.

The Holy Spirit is personal God, sent to bring the message of Jesus to God’s

people and to bring the life of Jesus in and through God’s people.

How does God do this? Sometimes the Holy Spirit speaks to us internally,

sometimes externally.

WHAT CAN YOU TEACH THEM?

Oftentimes, we don’t talk to non-Christians, those of us who are

Christians, because we don’t want to feel awkward. It’s better that we feel

awkward and they meet Jesus than we don’t feel awkward and they don’t

meet Jesus.

God is preparing them to hear about Jesus..

THREE THINGS TO LEARN FROM THE

SUFFERING SERVANT ABOUT EVANGELISM

#1GO TO THE

PERSON

Go to the person that the Holy Spirit sends you to.

#2 GIVE THEM

A BIBLE

TELL THEM ABOUT JESUS

IT’S ALL ABOUT JESUS

THE SACRIFICED LAMB

THE SUFFERING SERVANT

14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the

clans of Judah, out of you will come for me

one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old,

from ancient times.”

12 I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.13 And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the LORD.

16 Dogs surround me,a pack of villains encircles me;they pierce my hands and my feet.

The Ethiopian eunuch is hearing the words of Isaiah.

So even the God who is commissioning Isaiah to write the book that the Ethiopian eunuch is

reading is Jesus Christ in all his glory.

A TYPE OF ADAM

The first man in the Bible is Adam, and we’re all born with a

sin nature into Adam.

Jesus is called the last Adam, and we’re born again with a new nature

through Jesus, the last Adam.

When you see priests, it’s about Jesus, our great High Priest.

When you see kings, it’s about Jesus, the King of kings.

When you see prophets, it’s ultimately pointing to Jesus who is the very word

of God.

When you see shepherds, it reminds us of Jesus, the good Shepherd who

laid down his life for his sheep.

When you see judges, they point to Jesus who is the Judge, alone the Judge of the living and the dead.

And when you see the temple, the meeting place between God and man on the earth, it all points to Jesus who is God become a man and mediates

between us and our God.

The whole Bible is about Jesus.

It’s about Jesus Christ, who He is, what He has done. He is God become a

man. He is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no way to the Father but through him. There is no other name by which we will be saved. And from beginning to end, the whole book, it’s

all, always, only about Jesus.

ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN?

36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”

[37] Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotusand traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Today, let me tell you this, why are you here? Because this is a divine

appointment between me and you. I’m in the position of Philip sent by God. You’re in the position of the Ethiopian

eunuch, brought here by God so I could tell you that you need Jesus.

HAVE YOU BEEN BAPTIZED?

Baptism is where we show the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus was in our place for our sins, that he’s alive

and he’s our Savior.

Some of you have been Christians for a while and you’ve not been baptized. You need to be baptized in obedience to Jesus. Baptism doesn’t save you, but

it shows how Jesus saves you. His death, burial, resurrection, that’s our

salvation.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESPOND

We are a family, and you look at the family, there’s no perfect family, but we all depend on one another, depend on Jesus’ grace so we could continue to grow in repentance for the glory of Christ and the glory of his church.
