What are the 8 Elements (Parts) of a

Short Story????

Objectives/Goals• You will create a foldable in which you will:

– write down the 8 elements of a short story as well as the definitions of each element.

• This foldable will be kept:– in your L.A. Binder in the page protector.

• You will use this foldable as:– a study guide and class resource.

Let’s Make the Foldable!!

• You will need:– 1 sheet of white paper

– Scissors

– Markers/Colored Pencils/Crayons/Pencil

What is a Short Story?

• A short story is:– A work of fiction

that is short and can usually be read in 1 sitting. There are 8 elements to a short story.

Elements of a Short Story:1. Plot

2. Theme

3. Characters

4. Conflict

5. Setting

6. Mood

7. Tone

8. Point of View

1. Plot:• The PLOT is:

– the series of events, or what is going on in the story.

2. Theme• The theme is:

– Central idea or message of a story; what the story is mostly about.

– Also called the “Big Idea!”

• Think about a birthday party you may have attended or one that was for you.– Did the plates, napkins, cake and

balloons all have the same picture on them? If so, that would be the theme of the party.

– What are the themes pictured?

3. Characters• Characters in a short

story are:– The people, animals

and/or unknown beings in the story.

4. Conflict• Conflict is:

– The problem in a story.

5. Setting• The setting of a short story is:

– The time and location in which the story takes place.

– This affects the mood of the story.

6. Mood• Has anyone ever said to you, “You’re in

a bad mood,” or “You’re in a good mood!”

• There is a reason why you are in the mood you are in!!!

• Mood is:– The way a story makes you feel

during and after you read it.

7. Tone• Has anyone ever raised their voice at you?• Has anyone ever said to you, “Don’t use that

tone with me young lady/man?”

• Tone is:– The writer’s attitude towards the

subject they are writing about.

8. Point of View• When you read a story, do you always

know the narrator?

• Point of View is:– Who is “telling” the story

(narrator).– Either 1st or 3rd person.

Musical/Rhythmic

• You have been introduced to the 8 Elements of a short story.

• You have a nice foldable with the definitions of each element.

• Why don’t we learn these elements another way!!!

• Over the next few weeks, we are going to read several short stories and focus on each of the 5 elements (and rap, of course!).
