Every Space is a Learning Space HON knows learning doesn’t begin and end in the classroom. In every corner of a school, knowledge is transferred, papers are graded, and decisions are made. From the front office to the classroom — and every opportunity for learning between — we craft the products that inspire, engage and connect the ways in which students learn.

For years, many have predicted radical changes for the ways in which people learn. Technology has enabled a more personalized education for each of us, so why hasn’t the physical classroom environment adapted to support this change? As technology, learning and teaching styles continue to evolve, the classroom has become more relevant than ever. Learning is a social activity, and classrooms give students the ability to come together to share knowledge, make things and solve problems. The classroom isn’t going away—it’s in the midst of a renaissance, fundamentally changing modern education.
“Although schools may continue to fundamentally look and act as
they have for more than one hundred years, the way individuals learn has
already been forever changed. Instead of learning from others who have
the credentials to ‘teach’... we learn with others whom we seek on our own
and with whom we often share nothing more than a passion for knowing.”

Today’s students don’t remember life without the Internet, smartphones or Siri to answer questions. Communication and education have been transformed by technology, yet while students have woven digital tools into every aspect of their lives, our classrooms haven’t caught up. In fact, nearly 2/3 of students use their smartphones for educational purposes*, but many aren’t even allowed to bring them into the classroom. It’s time to fundamentally change the way schools embrace emerging technologies, learning techniques and teaching styles. This begins with understanding what’s currently broken, then applying those findings to create settings that support the ways that today’s students are learning, exploring ideas, exchanging knowledge and expressing themselves.

Giving students the tools they need to succeed academically is all about getting them in the right zone. Innovative classroom layouts utilize 4-6 learning zones that include multiple types of furniture arrangements and the flexibility to reconfigure quickly to adapt to different learning methodologies. Quiet zones for reading and focus. Active zones for group discussions and presentations. Kinesthetic zones for tinkering and making. This puts an Instructor in total command of the environment, and helps students absorb information and make new discoveries.

Beyond the well-rounded classroom with a variety of learning zones, there is always a need for specialized learning environments. Whether setting up a lab environment or supporting the ability to constantly adapt to changing technology, the following spaces allow instructors to dive deeper into a specific subject or teaching style. From getting hands-on experience to plugging into the latest tech advancements, these settings are dynamic, interactive and cutting edge.

Make Way For MakingNot all students can digest information from a lecture. Some learn by getting their hands dirty… literally. Kinesthetic learning puts the emphasis on physical activities and demonstrations, allowing students to tinker and explore new topics in a hands-on way. Makerspaces are a perfect example of a fully-realized kinesthetic learning space, in which students get real-world experience in creating solutions and exploring new ideas.

Learning Without BoundariesAs instructors evolve their teaching techniques to prepare the next generation for higher education and careers, it’s important that classrooms adapt to reflect real world settings. Active learning spaces need to move beyond conventional classrooms in favor of a dynamic, interactive style that teaches the skills employers value.

ADAPTABILITY
26 LEARNING
Preparing For The FutureStudents learn better when they are able to engage all five senses. Using technology naturally supports active, hands-on development. Robotics and computer repair classes create opportunities for students to explore all forms of socialization and communication, including listening skills and evaluating alternate perspectives. Setting up a classroom that allows for the constant adaptation to modern technology gives students exciting opportunities to express themselves and explore their imaginations.

While formal instruction takes place largely in a dedicated classroom environment, students develop their own rhythms and habits when it comes to studying and learning. They just need a comfortable place to sit and collaborate, read or explore new ideas. This can be in a library. Hallway. Cafeteria. Basically, anywhere that supports a student’s needs.

The Rhythm of LearningThe vast majority of learning and retention happens outside the classroom, which puts an emphasis on outfitting common spaces with the comfort, technological support and layout flexibility students need. A combination of lounge furniture and a variety of table heights gives students a choice between where they want to huddle up, power up and kick their feet up.
LEARNING 31
32 LEARNING
New Age LibrariesShhhh! Don’t tell this generation that libraries are places meant only for quiet reflection and whispering. From study breaks to group projects, libraries and multimedia centers now support a variety of activities throughout the day with spaces ranging from comfy lounges to individual workstations to group settings. This requires integrated power for charging devices, presentation aids to transfer knowledge, and most importantly, arrangements that help students accomplish more.
LEARNING 33
34 LEARNING
Multifunctional SpacesStudents gather in cafeterias or multipurpose rooms for much more than lunch or special events. These areas are hot spots for impromptu learning activities. Whether camping out before or after school to cram for a test or using the space for special projects that require more space than the classroom provides, these areas are frequently used for educational purposes. Setting up a variety of table sizes with flexible seating arrangements makes these spaces easy to turnover from one activity to another.
