Figure of Speech

Figure of Speech is a choice of certain words according

to the intent of the writer or speaker in order to obtain

beautiful aspects. There are three figure of speech that

often used by speakers :

1. Simile

2. Hyperbole

3. Personification

Simile

A simile is a figure of speech comparing two

unlike things, often introduced with the word “like”

or “as”.

Eg : - He swims like a fish.

- She walks as gracefully and elegantly as a cat.

Hyperbole

Hyperbole is an exaggerated or extreme

statement used to make an emphatic point.

Eg : - I had to wait in the station for ten days an

eternity.

- I was so hungry, I could eat a horse!

Personification

Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing, an

idea or an animal is given human attributes. The non-human

objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have

the ability to act like human beings.

Eg : - the stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky.

- she did not realize that her last chance was walking

out the door.
