SAFTEY OF STUDENTS

LAB SAFETY

SAFTEY OF STUDENTS

The Biochemistry laboratory can be a place of discovery and learning.

It can be a place of danger if proper common-sense precautions aren't taken

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Conduct yourself in a responsible

manner at all times in the laboratory

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Follow all instructions

Do not play in the laboratory

Do not use any laboratory equipment until you are told

to do soDo not perform any laboratory procedure until you are told to

do so

PERSONAL PROTECTIO

N

Wear an apron or lab coat in the proper manner

PERSONAL PROTECTIO

N

Tie long hair neatly at the back of the

neck

Wear shoes that enclose your entire

feet

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully.

If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Never work alone in the laboratory.

No student may work in the laboratory without the

presence of the teacher.

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Perform only those experiments authorized by

your teacher.  Carefully follow all instructions, both

written and oral.  Unauthoriz

ed experiment

s are not allowed.

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals or lab equipment.

Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments.

GOOD LABORATORY CONDUCT

Be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory.

Notify the teacher immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.

PROPER HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully before use.

Set up and use the equipment as directed by your teacher.

PROPER HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

Many common reagents, for example, alcohols and acetone, are highly flammable.

Do not use them anywhere near open flames.

PROPER HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

Always pour acids into water. If you pour water into acid, the heat of reaction will cause the water to explode into steam, sometimes violently, and the acid will splatter.

PROPER HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

Never point a test tube or any vessel that you are heating at yourself or your neighbor--it may erupt like a geyser.

PROPER HANDLING OF CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENT

Beware of hot glass--it looks exactly like cold glass.

LABORATORY HYGIENE

Never eat, drink or smoke in a laboratory

Never apply cosmetics

Never touch your face, mouth or eyes

ELECTRICAL

EQUIPMENT

Always do a visual check on electrical equipment before use, looking for obvious wear or defects

GENERAL TIDINESS

Keep your workplace tidy

Clear up waste, deal with washing up and put things away as you finish with them

LAB SAFTEY

Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the teacher immediately, no matter how trivial it seems.

DO NOT PANIC

FIRST AID

For all chemical splashes, wash with plenty of water for 10

minutesControl bleeding with direct

pressure, avoiding any foreign bodies such as glass

HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT

Never handle broken glass with your bare hands.  Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass.  Place broken glass in the designated glass disposal container.

If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment,

ASK THE TEACHER FOR HELP!

WASTE DISPOSAL

Dispose of all chemical waste properly.

Never mix chemicals in sink drains.

Sinks are to be used only for water.

Check with your teacher for disposal of chemicals and solutions.

ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE LEAVING LAB.
