Within the scope of a major investment project, the
PM10 in Laakirchen, which at present is used for the
production of high-white magazine paper, is to be
converted to the manufacture of lightweight corrugated
containerboard based on recycled paper. The resulting
production will then provide an ideal supplement to the
current product portfolio of Heinzel Group’s German
subsidiary, Raubling Papier GmbH.
In a parallel move, the second paper machine at the
Laakirchen mill, the PM11, which produces magazine
papers, is being enlarged in order to achieve increased
output. Moreover, the extensive investment programme
will lead to further alterations to the plant premises
derived from the need to adapt the mill’s technological
and logistical procedures in a number of areas.
Installation of the new waste paper pulper.
The PM10’s screening section is being replaced.
The new storage area for waste paper awaiting recycling.
The three calenders of the PM10 offer room for film presses and the after-drying section.
Construction of a new, 2,000 m2 fully automated warehouse for Starboard paper rolls.
A 100 MILLION EURO INVESTMENT AT THE LAAKIRCHEN LOCATION
Laakirchen Papier AG is Europe’s leading manufacturer of super-calendered (SC) papers.
With the mill’s entry into the growing packaging paper market, the signs all point to a new
direction in 2017.

LAAKIRCHEN PAPIER AG 2017
A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS
CONVERSION OF THE PM10 FROM SC PAPER TO CORRUGATED CONTAINERBOARD PRODUCTION
THE RHINO HAS LANDED – STARBOARD STANDS FOR SMART PACKAGING SOLUTIONS
PM11 ENLARGEMENT – OUTPUT RAISED TO 350,000 TONS PER YEAR
August 2017 will witness the start of a new age with the conversion of the PM10 to the
production of corrugated containerboard on the basis of recycled paper. Subsequently, the
machine will be one of the most modern of its type in Europe.
The Starboard name is a synonym for the environment-friendly production of top quality cor-
rugated containerboard possessing very high strength, optimum running characteristics and
uniform colouring. The related technology has been specially designed for the manufacture
of low grammages.
Parallel to the conversion of the PM10, the PM11 machine, which has a current annual
output capacity of around 300,000 tons of SC papers, is being enlarged in order to exploit
its full potential.
NEW STOCK PREPARATIONThe pulper has a 140 m3 capacity
and in combination with new stock
preparation offers a total output of
1,350 tons per day.
NEW HEADBOXThe two-layer headbox guarantees
first class sheet characteristics,
which represent a fundamental pre-
condition for the outstanding paper
quality that Starboard promises.
NEW WIRE SECTIONThis is important for the high-speed
production of the extensive, 70 to
140 gsm lightweight grammage
range.
January 2016
The Raubling paper mill, which already has a history dating back over a century, is taken over by Heinzel Group. With Starboard, a new star in the packaging market firmament is born.
August 2016
The decision is taken to modify the PM10 in Laakirchen with the aim of supplementing the existing Starboard product portfolio with lightweight corrugated containerboard.
August 2017
The PM10 in Laakirchen is converted to the production of corrugated container-board. Initial orders are accepted.
October 2017
The PM10 in Laakirch-en becomes operational. Production commences, the first paper is produced and, like that from Raubling, is marketed under the “Star-board” brand name. We set new standards!
NEW FILM PRESS ... for the uniform application
of starch on both sides.
NEW AFTER-DRYER SECTION... for high productivity and stable
machine running.
NEW WINDER... for excellent winding quality
(diameters of up to 1,500 mm).

Starboard papers provide the perfect basis for the
packaging employed for foods, beverages, fresh prod-
ucts, online mail order, electronic and household
goods. Moreover, they are also ideally suited to
packaging in areas such as the automotive, furniture
and chemicals industries, as well as for products in the
refrigeration chain and humid environments.
In the course of this enlargement an additional, so-
called super calender, which furnishes paper smooth-
ness and gloss, is to be put into operation. The focus of
the PM11 will be on the production of papers for offset
printing using a high percentage of recycled waste paper.
Moreover, in future papers for rotogravure printing will
also be manufactured. SC papers from Laakirchen will
continue to be marketed under the “grapho” name and
be employed for magazines, newspaper supplements,
catalogues and advertising materials.
