REPORT 'ROUND RANDOLPH
Dear Readers,
Apologies are in order for the tardiness of this Journal. Between my
procrastination habits and my daughters wedding, this Journal is late
getting printed and out to you.
This Journal has the Marriage Bonds for Randolph County Bride Index
from "Jn through "M!1. At the usual six pages of Marriage Bonds, the
marriages were taking forever! So we decided to speed up the process by
making this whole issue marriages and try to get through with them. We
have so much more to put in the Journal, including the later marriages, that
we hope you approve of our decision to make this a Marriage Bond Journal.
In the news category:
We were all saddened by the death of Lewis GRIGG, Bobbie's husband.
Lewis was a fine husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all.
I!m sure you all join me in offering Bobbie our sympathy.
Lindsey A. LAMBERT, our President, is now on the mend after an operation.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
The Randolph Room has had more than its usual flow of researchers from
all over the United States this spring and summer. If you have written for
information and have not received an answer, please be patient. Ruth Anne
SHAW helps with the correspondence as well as Marsha FARLOW. WeTll get
to your letter as soon as we can.
To h&lp make up for the tardiness of this Journal, we are sending you
the Summer Journal at the same time.
Happy ancestor hunting]

THOMAS T. NEWBY'S BOOK
1855 - 1857
Part V
4.th day the 10th. Again at camp, 1 mile from Warsaw. Crossed the Big
Cohera river this morn; some moss there; trees loaded with it, 6 or 8 feet
long; very pretty. Plenty of reed and Cyprus knees here. After crossing
the Big Cohera we passed through the largest plantation I have seen yet, owned
by one Richard HOLMES; some negroes here. He had 100 hogs up fattening, a
nice lot; fed them boiled sweet potatoes. He gave us a bushel of nice
potatoes. Saw some very large Mulberry trees along down here. Old HOLMES
said they were worth cultivating; fruit large and would last some 2 months;
good for hogs. Passed through Clinton, a right smart little town. Crossed
the "6 runs." G. !s mules hung up; some of the company had to wade in over
knee deep to lift at the wheels before he could get out. There was a log
in the way that occasioned it. More big plantations; negroes gathering
cotton in a very large field. The white pods or bunches of cotton look nice
on the leafless stalks in the field. The sides of the roads and fence corners
have been scraped up into piles to make manure of; looks like potato hills.
I heard the cars at Warsaw just then, which is one mile ahead. The pine
trees are "chipped" 20 feet high here; saw 2 negroes scraping off the
turpentine. I wrote a letter to Phebe last night & this morning.
5th day the 11th. Pitched our tent again; awoke this morn and it was
raining hard, and continued very hard till noon. Passed through Warsaw, a
station on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad; mailed my letter here. Went
through Kenansville, the county seat of Duplin Co. Wet, sandy, swampy road
today. Saw sign of fire in the woods; an abundance of pine timber killed by
it. M. C. DAVIS got some oysters and gave me one to eat; prime. Saw some
Green Bay trees; leaves look like laurel leaves. The slaves down here are
very polite; "tip the beaver" when they meet you, always; and sometimes, "How
are you, Massa?"
6th day the 12th. A beautiful morning this; robins & other birds, singing
like it was the spring of the year. Saw some very long corn rows & just as
straight as a line; rows about 5 feet apart each way, with one stalk in the
hill. Crossed the northeast fork of Cape Fear river, where big Limestone
empties into it. Hallsville is situated here. It consists of a turpintine
still, a store & a few dwelling houses. The still is a large one; can manu
facture 180 galls, of "spirits" per day; 13 bbls. No. 1 turpentine will make
90 galls, of the spirits, or so the old negro told me, that attended the still.
Another one that was free told how they collected the turpentine. The boxes
are aimed to hold about 1 quart. One hand attends to 12 to 16,000 boxes;
never less than 12,000. A good hand can get '240 barrels of turpentine per
year. They "chip" the trees about 23 times during the spring and summer,
cutting one whip at a time; this rate will advance up the tree some 2 feet
per year. We saw 3 or 4,000 acres of land that had been burnt over one year
ago; killed all the pines, or nearly all, & there was no other timber. Hundreds
of barrels of turpentine along the road; saw some men hauling of it; some on
carts with an ox, and some hauling on the ground; having journals in the ends
of barrels, and fixed in a frame, and went rolling along; 3 barrels at a time.
70
Saw some Ladle Gum trees in a swamp; passed some rice fields, potato patches,
etc. We are in Onslow Go. now. T. T. HILL is laying under the tents, with
his head on a wide stump and is fast asleep; the rest are all asleep, so I
must go to bed too.
7th day the 13th. Were in sight of a large swamp on New River this
morning. More long moss trees. N. C. DAVIS went one road here and we
another; aiming to get together again at the Fishery, or before we got there.
This was done in order to sell out their loading. Passed one of the farms
today; one corn field, that an old slave said was 1,169 hills long; the rows
about 4-r feet apart; run 20 plows in it, and would yeild 4-00 barrels of corn.
25 acres in one potato patch, 22 hands then digging and putting up the potatoes.
EVERET, the proprietor, owned about 130 slaves, a real town of negro cabins
around his house. He is naturally "broken up" now by standing security for
a man or men in Newbern of 92,000 dollars; would have tolose the whole. He
had just sold 4-0 of his negroes, and would have to sell more, also selling
his stock off. I saw a Yewpon tree today. Crossed New river late this eve;
a tolerably large stream. The schooners run up to about 30 miles. The river
has a "draw bridge" over it where we crossed for the schooners to pass. Went
through Jacksonville immediately after crossing the river; it is the county
seat of Qnslow Co. Saw some 4-0 bu. of ground peas in one pile. Camped 3/4. of a mile from town. M. C. D(AVIS) came to our camp after supper; got
together sooner than we expected. But he sold out his flour & thought he
would come to us.
1st day the 14-th. Now at WILSON!s Fishery on New river, or within ■§■ a
mile of it; arrived here a little after night; river not in sight. "Border
ruffians" about us last night; they stole about 10 lbs. of G!s flour; and
14* pkgs. of tobacco, a small tin bucket with some 2 lbs. of lard in it, and
his wearing shoes from M. C. DAVIS1s; DAVIS had to go back to town {\ mile) and get him some shoes, as nothing could be heard of the stolen property.
This morning was very warm & some rain; cooler this ever & pretty smart rain
& cooler yet now; windy and clear. Saw a sign post today that said 36 miles
to Newbern. Had fried oysters for supper; a good supper that. We are within
3 miles of the Atlantic Ocean, but it is so windy we can!t hear it roar. We
are all highly set up with the idea of a peep at the ocean tomorrow morning;
all anxious to see the "vasty deep."
2nd day the 15th. Had fried fish for breakfast; good eating that. All
of us but M. C. DAVIS started on horseback out to the beach; he having been
there before, so he stayed with the wagons. We rode about 1-J- miles to one
Daniel HENDERSON'S and got him to accompany us as a guide the rest of the way,
about 1-jjf miles farther, it not being safe for strangers to cross a certain marsh without some one along who was acquainted with it. He soon got his
horse & we again were moving on toward the object I long have desired to
behold. We passed through part of a plantation; a field where corn and ground
peas had grown. A few hands, white and black, were picking the peas off of
the vines, but we passed on without halting. Passed through a pretty grove
of Long Leaf Pine, live oak sassafras, small oak, etc., then through a sage
marsh where nothing but broom sage grew & that about 4. feet high. This marsh
was quite miry. Our guide went before & we walked in Indian style, him beating
71
a path through it. To our left, and in the marsh, was a beautiful cluster
of live oak bushes, and no other timber here. Next was the sand banks and
soon, Oh, the mighty Ocean in all its splendor, burst upon our view. What
a sight! The grandest I have seen yet. The Hawk!s Nest, Natural Bridge, or
Peaks of Otter; what are they? They all are very grand but have to give
place to things grander than they. Waves some 6 feet high, strike the beach,
break, foam and roar, the water flying considerable higher. One wave would
strike the beach & then run up on it some 20 yds. & then gradually run back,
& right after this would be another, then another and so on; always
continually coming. The tide was "flowing" when we got there, & continued
till about the time we left. Some 50 yds. of the beach was left dry, more
than what was, when re reached the shore. Two schooners were in sight. I
rode in the water a little, but a large "breaker," scared the horse and he
very nearly threw me off in the water in his hurry to get away. Thomas T.
HILL thought he would have a"i.little fun too, with his mule and a horse, by
leading them where the water would run around them; but they also scared and
in the scrimmage he got wet nearly to his knees. We went to the mouth of
New river, 3 miles along the beach; got lots of pretty shells and rocks;
shore just lined with them; saw numbers of sea birds, mostly gulls, both
grey and white. Our guide left us on the shore and went with some one a
"coon hunting" in the marsh. They caught one coon. He (our guide) came
back and said it was time for us to go back to the wagons. We consented of
course, but it was very reluctantly, as we all thought we had been there but
a short time (all day though). However we started going the same route we
traveled going out. Thomas T. HILLfs mule fell down with him in the marsh
in a miry place. We passed where they were picking ground peas again and
the owner (Daniel1 s brother William) invited us to take as many as we wished,
which we did and thanked him. Then proceed on and reached our camp about
sundown; all loaded with shells and highly pleased with our jaunt. The
weather is nice now; a beautiful day to visit the beach; clear except a small
clour in the south. But it has been the shortest day, seemingly, I ever
experienced. We had Speckled Trout for supper; fine, very fine; some of
them would weight 5j? pounds. Thomas T. HILL and M. C. DAVIS took a bate of
oysters after supper; right fresh ones, yet in the shell; just roast them
awhile and then open the shell and just "cope" them.
3rd day the 16th. Still at WILSON1 s Fishery, £ niile from "the river. Can hear the Ocean roar plainly this morn; sounds like a coming storm. Went
down to the river this morn; it is 3 miles wide here. WILSON had caught
about 1 barrel of Speckled Trout and was cleaning them; caught them last
night. Saw one of his little boys in a canoe out in the river,"oystering,"
I walked over to one Colonel MOMFORD's (about 1 mile) to get some potatoes,
and to see his ground peas. WILSON'S boy (one of them) set me over a little nook of the river with a canoe, some 150 yds. I soon arrived at the Colonel1 s
overseer1 s house; he himself did not live there, but was there today. He
and his overseer accompanied me to the building where his ground peas were.
He showed me the peas that was picked off of the vines and said there was
over two thousand bushels in the pile; there were a few of them "mighty
certain." That was about Jr of his crop on that plantation, the rest not
being picked. He said that he would have between 5 and 6,000 bushes in all,
as he had more on his other plantations. He had 80 acres of them there on
that farm; 60 acres within one fence. After looking at his ground peas
72
nothing would do but that I should dine with them as it was then about noon.
I of course complied with their request; had a very good dinner of roast
wild duck, sweet potatoes, butter, etc., too tedious to mention. A little
negro girl (slave) waited on us nicely. After dinner we went out to the
field where his negroes were picking peas off of the vines; 25 hands of both
sexes hard at work; sitting around small fires as it was a little cool, but
not very. Peas had been plowed up and let dry in the sunshine and then
stacked up, to pick along in the Fall & Winter. He gave me a pockets full
of peas to eat. Colonel MQMFORD is one of the most wealthy men in Onslow Co.;
owns 3 plantations and a grist mill and saw mill; had 4- overseers and 150
negroes. His overseer here, shot one of his slaves about 2 weeks ago; did
not kill him. He undertook to whip the slave, but he got away from him and
run. The overseer, having his double barrel shotgun with him, told him to
"Stop" or he would ffshoot him." The negro hollowed back for him to "shoot
him" so the overseer did shoot him with both loads, in the legs. The over
seer himself related the whole affair to me, in quite a boastful manner;
but he got no applause from me for the deed. He then got -jjr a bushel of
potatoes for me; I paid him 25 cets. for them and returned. The little boy
set me back again; I gave him some of my peas, thanked him and went to our
camp. Froa-Sthe overseer's house is a pretty fair view of the Ocean, also
the river. Thomas, Henry and Micajah have been trading; getting fish &
oysters, and selling their flour. Fish not very plenty here now; catch an
abundance of them sometimes. 6 months ago 160 barrels of mullets were caught
at one "haul," 80 fish filling a barrel; 12,800 fish in all. The seine was
200 yds. long, 12 feet wide at each end, and 16 ft. in the middle. They
were caught in the Ocean close to the shore, or rather "Breakers."
4th day the 17th. Beautiful weather yet; froze a little last night;
went down to the fishery two or 3 times this morn. About noon, Henry, Thomas,
WILSON and I went 1 mile to WILKIN!s Fishery to get more fish & oysters.
WILSON not having many on hands. We went half of the way on water, the
other -g- on land. Saw lots of oysters in the water (the river) and the oyster shells were piled up at the landings; sightful; thousands of loads of them.
Saw them opening oysters. They boil or rather steam them awhile, & then
with a knife pry the shell open & take the oyster out. Eat a bate of them
with vinegar & pepper. My company bought 2 barrels of fish & one of oysters.
Saw a drove of wild geese this morn & another this eve.
5th day the 18th, Up pretty soon this morning fixing to leave, having
sold all their flour and bought as many fish & oysters as they want. They
sold their flour at $8, $9 and some for $10 per barrel, or at that rate;
thought it was in sacks. Paid from $4j- to $5i per barrel for fish and 55 cts.
to 60 cts. per gall, for oysters. Started for Randolph Co. this morn about
9 oTclock; pretty weather yet; though the natives think it very cool; I do
not. Camped tonight not far from a house; have a big pine log fire.
