Painting: Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze

This painting depicts the father of the U.S., George Washington, leading his troops in the Revolutionary War. His exceptional leadership in the war played a large role in allowing the U.S. to become what it is today.

Literature: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird addresses dark transgressions in American society with warm, funny heroes who choose courage despite overwhelming opposition. It is required reading in most American schools.

Bob Dylan is an iconic American musician from Minnesota who rose to prominence in the 1960’s. His songs often cover social issues.

Fashion: Moccasins and the Baseball Cap

Moccasins are shoes that were worn by American Indians. European settlers also wore them and today many people wear modern forms of them.

The Baseball Cap is a hat that American people across all socioeconomic levels wear.

The White House is one of the most recognized buildings in the U.S. and is a symbol of American democracy.

Architecture: The White House

Sports: Football

American football is the most popular sport in the U.S. and is a form of social glue in American society.

Film: It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

The film industry plays a significant role in U.S. culture and It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most popular Christmas films in the U.S. It is a great portrayal of American optimism.

Play: Grease

Grease is a very well-liked musical that enacts the American high school experience.

Dance: The Charleston

The Charleston originated from descendants of African American slaves in Charleston, South Carolina. It became immensely popular during the 1920’s and is still danced today.

Technology: The Light BulbInnovation and entrepreneurship are at the heart of the American spirit and Thomas Edison is a good example of that spirit. Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb in 1879 and in doing so changed the quality of life and economic production dramatically.
