PROBLEM STATEMENTA large number of youth in India miss out on educational
opportunities
They find themselves out of place in the increasingly competitive employment market in the light of changing economy in India
There is a gap between the market demand and their skills
Despite 12 years of schooling a large number of youth end up engaging in unorganized and unskilled livelihood options minimizing returns on their labor
Lack of sustained source of livelihood results in distress, migration, social deviation. Social and economic disparity increases as a result
INTRODUCTION: KOTAK-LABS Kotak Education Foundation (KEF) in collaboration with Dr.
Reddy’s Foundation (DRF) started the Kotak-LABS programme on a one year Build-Operate-Transfer’ model in Jan 2007.
DRF has 12 years of demonstrated track record of training over 150000 youth from different parts of the country and a placement support record of 85%.
KEF partners with schools or NGOs who provide infrastructure support, to train high school / college drop-outs in the age group of 18-25 years, who belong to the economic lowest 30% of society, defined at a monthly family income of less than Rs. 4000.

OBJECTIVES To cater to youth from economically and educationally weak
backgrounds
To be responsive to the youth’s emotional and development needs
To improve the quality of life of such youth and their families
To foster an environment of learning and mentoring
To establish strategic tie ups with industry and business establishments in order to provide market based opportunity / access to opportunity
KOTAK-LABS TRAINING The training is for a period of 3-4 months
The focus of the training is on:
Life Skills
Technical Skills – Theory & Practical
On-job Training
Personality Development
Work Readiness
Communicative English
Computer Literacy
Placement Support.
KOTAK-LABS TRAINING Training is presently given in Hospitality Services, Customer
Relations & Retail Sales, ITES and BPO.
The knowledge and skills enhanced through this initiative would help the youth to acquire sustainable livelihood.
Each domain has maximum student strength of 35, in order to maintain quality and a reasonable facilitator-student ratio.
At the end of the training period attempts are made for placement at a remuneration of above Rs. 5000/- per month.
Placement in industries which are non-exploitative and those that provide opportunities for career growth.
THE LABS PROCESS
BUSINESS 2 YOUTH (B2Y) NETWORKING WITH CORPORATES
Guest lectures on specific topics
Permitting students to visit their facility for industry exposure
Providing opportunity for one week on-the-job training
Providing opportunity for part time jobs.
Providing infrastructure to conduct the training programme
Helping to develop appropriate and updated curriculum
Imparting training related to the specific industry
Providing equipment for practical training
Mentoring support for candidates on a regular basis
Recruiting students from Kotak-LABS
Financially contributing towards training cost for self sustainability of Kotak-LABS
BUSINESS 2 YOUTH (B2Y) NETWORKING WITH CORPORATES
PROGRESS TO DATE Concluded the BOT [Build – Operate - Transfer] agreement with Dr
Reddy Lab in Feb 2008.
DRF will continue to support the programme through training and
quality audit
Certificates will be issued jointly by DRF and KEF.
Set up 5 centres, Trained 220 aspirants & Placed 170 aspirants.
240 aspirants are currently under training.
Recruited 18 professionals in the team.
Have experienced the learning curve through 1-2 cycles.
Established relationship with 15 plus employers.

Created role-models for other underprivileged youth in the communities

Provided exposure to various employment options outside their communities
Reduced gender inequality by providing equal opportunities
Increased confidence levels and instilled a sense of achievement among the
youth
Increased income levels on a regular basis leading to improved quality of life,
better lifestyle and standard of living
Facilitated the process of easy entry into the industry
Created first generation of people working in the non-traditional sectors of
economy thus giving them alternate sources of livelihood
PLANS FOR 2008/09 Add 2 more centres in Parel and Dadar.
Each centre will have 2 batches of 30 participants [CBD will have
120 participants] .
Total participants nearly 500 students every 3 months and 1500
plus students during the year.
Domain knowledge –Hospitality, CRS, ITES and BPO.
Will consider adding Construction, Para medical and Automobile at
a future date
Will consider increasing the number of participants to 150 in each
centre.
Research in Tara and Shivkar to establish demand.
