Department Activity for the Academic Year 2017-2018
PROGRAMME – 1
Special Lecture on „History of Botany‟
The Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College (KASC), Coimbatore organized a special lecture on 31-08-
2017 at 10.00a.m. The meeting was started with the prayer song by
Devi Krishna and Arsha Rajagopal, II M.Sc., Botany. S. Naveen, II
M.Sc., Botany welcomed the gathering. Department profile was read
by Dr. V. Thangapandian, Head and Associate Professor of Botany.
The oath was taken by students Secretary and Joint secretary of
Botany department. R. Banupriya, II M.Sc., Botany honoured the
guest. Dr. V. Balasubramaniam, Principal (i/c) of our college
delivered the presidential address. The resource person, Shri. V.
Ganesan, I.F.S., Field Director and Chief Conservator of Forest,
Anamalai Tiger Reserve Forest, Pollachi delivered a lecture on the
topic “History of Botany”. In his lecture he explained the evolutionary
origin of plants from lower to higher forms and their importance wirh
regards to environmental aspects. He described the forest ecosystems
and endangered animal reserved areas. The students came to know
about the values of flora and fauna. The deliberations are most useful
for the staff, students and scholars and they had discussion with the

lecture. Finally vote of thanks was proposed by K. Monica, I M.Sc.,
Botany. The programme was ended with national anthem.

Seminar on
„Intellectual Property Rights - Prospects and Challenges‟
An one day seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights – Prospects and
Challenges” sponsored by Indian Science Congress Association; Coimbatore
Chapter was organized by Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science
College, Coimbatore on 15th
February, 2018.
Dr.V. Thangapandian, Associate Professor and Head, Department of
Botany, KASC, welcomed the gathering. Dr.V.Balasubramaniam, Principal
presided over the function. In his presidential address he gave an overall view
on ambitious targets of IPR and highlighted the need for patent filing.
In the inaugural session, Dr.C.A.Vasuki, Secretary, Kongunadu Arts and
Science College and Convenor, Indian Science Congress Association,
Coimbatore Chapter inaugurated the IPR cell website of our college and
delivered inaugural address. She stated that IPR is the fuel that powers the
engine of fostering, invention and innovation. In her inaugural address she also
focused on various issues relating to biopiracy and about the current status of IP
legislation in India. She emphasized that number of patent filing in India is
increasing enormously and also motivates young student innovators to create
their own intellectual assets.
Dr.Paulsamy, Dean, Academic and R&D offered felicitation. In his
address he highlighted about the main objective of the meet. He emphasized on
various aspects relating to sufficiency of disclosure, drafting, technical aspects,
claims, utility, inventorship and authorship of IPR patenting. He interrelated
IPR and traditional indigenous knowledge with examples from Kanni tribes,
critically involved in these issues.

Review of Thematic Sessions
In the technical session- I, Dr. Arunkumar Arumugham, Director,
BioAgeS Innovation (P) Ltd, Coimbatore, discussed about “Compliance and
statues related to biological materials in IPR”. He briefly explained about the
nature of IPR acts, IP Law of India copy right, National Accreditation agencies,
National security, importance of patenting biological material and also about the
biological shifts etc. He also insisted on various available Indian acts and laws
where one can take help in case of infringement of his or her IP rights of any
biological material. The session was very interesting and created firsthand
knowledge and information about IPR to young creative minds.
In the technical session II, Dr. R. Senthil Kumar, Professor, Department
of Trade and Intellectual Property, Directorate of CARDS, TNAU, Coimbatore
deliberated a lead lecture on the topic “Role of Intellectual Property Rights in
Research”. He explained about world Intellectual Property organization, UN
promoting use and protection works of human spirit. He also discussed his
views on TRIPS (Trade related aspects of IPR), WTO (World trade
Organization) and so on.
Technical session III was addressed by Dr. Parimelazhagan Thangaraj,
Professor, Department of Botany, School of Life Sciences, Bharathiar
University, Coimbatore. He delivered a lecture on the topic “Intellectual
Property Rights – An Overview”. He stressed about the current status of IP
legislation in India. He also explained about how to identify patentable
inventions and solve various problems faced by Scientists while filing patent
applications. He also briefly discussed about design and trade mark protection,
Quasi Intellectual property rights, Trade Marks, Designs, and Copyrights etc.
He emphasized on Geographical Indications stating examples from Thirupati

laddu, Mysore silk, Darjeeling tea, Basmati rice etc. This session was very
informative and interactive.
The main focus of the seminar was to promote and inspire awareness on
protection and enforcement of IPR amongst the young intellectuals, Researchers
and Academicians. Such awareness programmes would in turn be highly
essential for the promotion of creativity and innovations. Dr.K.Thenmozhi
Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, KASC,
proposed vote of thanks. A total number of 215 participants participated in this
programme and got benefited.
Our Institution is indebted to ISCA, Coimbatore Chapter for their
constant support and encouragement in conducting such activities and hopefully
expecting their support in future endeavors also.

Workshop on
„Farming practices with environmental security‟
The Department of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College
(KASC), Coimbatore organized an One day workshop on „Farming Practices
with Environmental Security‟ which was held at Navaneetha Krishnan Farms,
Mettupalayam, Coimbatore on 21.02.2018. Indian Science Congress
Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter sponsored the programme.
In the inaugural session, Dr. S. Jamuna, Organizing Secretary of the
workshop and Assistant Professor of Botany, KASC welcomed the gathering
and highlighting the importance of farming in India. Mr. T. Navaneetha
Krishnan, Agriculture and Information Systems, Poothottam, Mettupalayam,
Coimbatore delivered the special lecture on “Farming practices with
environmental security” and gave hands-on training on the preparation of
„Organic biofertilizers‟ for the farmers. In his lecture, he told that the basic
principles and importance of organic farming practices and their alternative
names like zero budget farming, ecofriendly farming, biodynamic farming, do
nothing farming, sustainable farming, etc. He pointed out that the farmers
should have the knowledge about the agricultural pest control, water
management, environmental forces, economical forces and value added
products by ecologically sound organic farming. He also emphasized need of
usage of day calendar for better crop production and demonstrated the
preparation of organic fertilizers like CPP (Cow Pat Pit), CPP500 to CPP508 to
the farmers.
Later, Mr. K. Krishnamoorthy of Pannimadai village who is practicing
organic farming since a decade in his 10 acres land for paddy cultivation shared
his experience in natural farming adoptions.

About 40 farmers attended the meeting and deliberations of the workshop
are most useful for farmers. The meeting was concluded at 4.30pm with the vote
of thanks proposed by the Dr. K. Karthika, the another Organising Secretary of
the programme and Assistant Professor of Botany, KASC.
