(Wayland) After you read a book, did you ever wonder about why theauthor wrote the story the way they did or how they came up with thestory? Steeby students were given that opportunity this week when theyheld a Skype session with author, Josh Funk. His first book LadyPankcake and Sir French Toast was a big hit with Steeby 2nd graders.
Niki Barnes, Media Specialist, arranged the skype sessions with Mrs. JillGardner’s and Mrs. Beth Nykerk’s classes. The students asked the authorall kinds of questions. They found out it took almost four years for his bookto be completed and that his favorite food is corn! Josh got the idea forthe book one day when his own children couldn’t agree on what theywanted for breakfast.

(Otsego) Art criticism lessons take on a whole new life each fall for Otsego 5thgraders. The entire class takes a field trip to see ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. “It’sa great way for students to experience the art world in a one-of-a-kind event,”says Kristy Jorgensen, elementary art teacher. “We hope that they learn how toview, appreciate and discuss art that they encounter at ArtPrize and in any futureexperiences with art in public settings.”
Before the field trip, she gives ideas of things they should look for to betterunderstand the artist’s message and how, and why, they created it. “I hope thatthey have a better understanding of the world of art around us and the artists thatare creating work today,” Jorgensen says of the trip.
ArtPrize gives students the opportunity to experience art like never before. Theysee a wide variety of art formsand in all shapes and sizes.From paintings to liveperformances to wood carvingsand interactive displays, ArtPrize showcases dozens ofart forms on a grand scale. As the students take inthese professional works of art, they are also wearingtheir art critic hats, “After our trip, it is wonderful toshare their experiences. We also do an art criticismwriting piece on the winning artwork from ArtPrize. Inthe writing, students write a description of the work,they analyze the work, interpret and judge the work ofart.”
Not only can students see professional artists in a real-world setting, they can also talk to them. Most of theartists are standing by their entries ready for questionsand willing to strike up conversations about theirinspiration. This is one of the most exciting field trips ofthe year and one they talk about for weeks. Thesestudents may also get a chance to go back to ArtPrizeon a field trip; 8th grade art students and advanced artstudents at the high school also attend ArtPrize.

The excitement of Tech Camp came back in a big way this week
when students got to Skype with the developers of app they
used to create their 3D printed robots.
(Otsego) - TinkerPlay was a new feature to the second tech camp session afterelementary technology teacher Michael Miller joined the Teacher Advisory Committeethis summer for a company called Autodesk 123. The San Francisco company makesCAD software used by millions of engineers in the “real world.” During the summersession, Mr. Miller learned about their newest product, TinkerPlay; he decided to roll itout at Tech Camp, “This is something that brings what’s in their imagination into reality,”he says.
TinkerPlay was a hit! Inside this app, students created their own robots using theavailable features. Mr. Miller then printed them out on the schools 3D printers. Becauseit can take hours to print them all out, it was just recently that the 45 robots werecompleted. After posting a few of the pictures on Twitter, TinkerPlay asked to Skype withthe kids.
“It was awesome!” the kids said.
“It felt like talking to someone who’s big,” said 6th grader Anthony Hyet.
It was big. They skyped with the original and current developers of the app both in SanFrancisco and in Iceland. Yes, Iceland. But these “big” players wanted to hear from thelittle ones, “They want the input and it’s great because the students feel like they’reinvolved and have a voice in the design,” Mr. Miller said.
“Do you like the app?” They asked them. All of the kids do. “What do you like it about it?”they followed up.
“We get to create our own guy and it resembles what you like,” says Pierce Bentley.
“It’s like taking what you think in your mind and you can go on TinkerPlay and create it,”added Jayson Ennis.
“I like how it’s bionic. You can snap pieces together,” adds Tyson Ouellette.
The developers asked the kids what features they would like to see added. They had a lot of suggestions, from adding types of hats and otheraccessories to vehicles and ways to play with their creations, like put them into a videogame or take pictures. They also want the company toadd jet packs.
As a follow-up to some of their suggestions, the developers showed them a couple things in the works, like a battery pack they can use to addlights and a skateboard that can also be paired with a rail set, “You’ll get to play in the environments, not just create them.”The students will get to see if they use any of their suggestions. At the end of Thursday’s call with Iceland, the developers asked if they wouldbe willing to try some new product features they’ll be rolling out in a few weeks. “Yeah!” they yelled, and gave two thumbs up to the camera.

(Martin) – East Martin Christian’s third through eighth graders had theamazing opportunity to travel to Grand Rapids to check out Art Prize.
Upon arriving students were surprised to find out that not only could they seesome great art, but also had a chance to put their own creative stamp onsome pieces. “Hometown Heroes” was a favorite piece among the students.This piece was a large American flag painting on canvas in which studentscould sign their name, then write a name of someone in their life that is a heroto them. The fun didn't stop there. Students were able to get hands- on withPig E Banks, located in front the PNC bank. Here students could put paintedhandprints on a large pig sculpture. It was a perfect example of workingtogether to make something beautiful!
Along the way students got tosee more creative pieces andmeet some cool artist.However, the biggesthighlight of the day was yet tocome.
Students made their way toRosa Park Circle where theyhad the chance to get on thenoon news broadcast. Asstudents cheered and wavedmaking sure they were seen,the news anchor introducedWest Michigan to the group ofstudents from East MartinChristian School! What a coolmoment!

The bassoon is the low-est sounding and thelargest of the woodwindinstruments. They aremade of maple woodand also of ebonite. Stu-dent sized bassoons aremade of plastic resin tomake the instrumentmore affordable. Mostbassoon players needto have big hands somany students learnanother instrumentfirst. It has a doublereed that is attachedto the bocal which is acurved tube.
Early bassoonswere called Dulcians or Curtals.The main difference from thoseto modern day bassoons, is thatthe old instruments were carvedfrom a single piece of wood anddidn’t have any keys! In Franceduring the 17th century, instru-ment builders made the firstbassoon with separate jointsand by the mid 19th century, the17 key bassoon was developed.
The bassoon is held diagonally in front of the player andcannot be supported by the player’s hands alone. Additionalsupport is required as it is heavy. The extra support is ei-ther a neck strap or a seat strap which is attached to thebassoon and laid across the chair seat before sitting down tohold it in place. To make a sound, the bassoonist blows airthrough a double reed causing it to vibrate. To play notesand vary the sound, the bassoonist must cover differentcombinations of tone holes with fingers or keys.

Hopkins Elementary4th Annual Hopkins Elementary VIKE HIKE
(Hopkins) On Thursday, October 8th, the students and staff of Hopkins Elementary participated in the 4th Annual "Vike Hike". This walk-a-thon fundraiseris put on by the Hopkins Organization of Parents and Educators (HOPE). Throughout the day each grade level walked on the track for one hour, completingas many laps as possible. When the day was finished, the students and staff completed nearly 5,000 laps (1,250 miles) on the track and raised $12,500.

The "Seasons" exhibit was in theArtPrize Top 20 from the publicvote. The trunk is made ofsuspended wooden threadspools, and the leaves on thetrees changed as you walkedaround the piece to representeach of the four seasons. It is inthe category of 3D art. It was afavorite of many people in ourgroups.
