The Respiratory
System
You can live longer without food and water than you can without
oxygen?
Trueor
False
You can only live a few minutes if your
body doesn’t have oxygen!
True
Why?
Your body cannot store oxygen like it can store
food.
* You must provide your body with fresh oxygen all
the time!

•The main parts of the Respiratory System
•The jobs of the Respiratory System
•What breathing and Respiration are all about
•Ways you can prevent damage to your Respiratory System
You will learn:
Who “nose” the parts of the Respiratory
System?
NOTE A: Each air sac is covered with tiny blood vessels (CAPILLARIES). Oxygen moves from air sacs into capillaries. Carbon dioxide moves in the opposite direction. Red blood cells transport these gases to and from all the cells in our body.
NOTE B: If too much mucus is made then the passage way gets smaller and air has a harder time to get through. This can happen in chronic bronchitis and asthma.
NOTE C: Air flows from bronchioles into millions of tiny air sacs called ALVEOLI. The sacs look like bunches of grapes at the end of the bronchial tubes. The alveoli are where the oxygen from the air enters your blood, and the carbon dioxide from your body goes into the air. Alveoli are very tiny, but you have a lot of them in your lungs. In fact, you have 300,000,000 alveoli in each lung. That's six hundred million in total - and your body needs them all to get enough oxygen in your blood!
The Respiratory System has two
main jobs:•Provide oxygen for the body
•Remove gaseous wastes from the body
The Circulatory and Respiratory
Systems work together to get the jobs done!
Can you explain how?
Take a deep breath and think about it.
• Breathing - oxygen is inhaled
• Circulation - oxygen is carried to the cells
• Respiration - oxygen and sugar combine in a chemical reaction to release ENERGY
• Circulation - carbon dioxide is carried to the lungs
• Breathing - carbon dioxide is exhaled
Let’s break down
the process:
After all, the system has been named for it!
What is respiration?
A process that takes place in the cells of your body. Oxygen combines with sugar, and ENERGY is released! Carbon dioxide and water are produced as
wastes.
Respiration is...
“That’s too much information!
Why do I need to understand that?”
YAWN!
For example: Yawning is your bodies way of releasing extra
carbon dioxide.
You need to understand that...
Your brain controls
breathing by sensing
the amount of carbon
dioxide in your body.
Think about this...
Why do you breath harder when you run?
Your muscles need more
oxygen to work hard.
Breathing harder releases carbon dioxide
and brings in more oxygen quickly!
What if we run out of
oxygen?!
* Plants release the oxygen we need through
photosynthesis, and we release the carbon dioxide they need when we breath.
If we care for the plant
life in our
environment,
we won’t!
•Bacteria & Viruses
•Asthma & Allergies
•Polluted & Smoke-filled air
What can harm the Respiratory
System?
* Respiratory System problems can become serious quickly. YOU NEED OXYGEN TO
SURVIVE!
•Exercise regularly
•Avoid polluted air
•NEVER smoke!
Keep your Respiratory
System healthy!
