Ifyouarecrossingthepathofanotherboatyoushouldyieldtoaboatonyourright,orstarboard.

Youshouldyieldtoallboatsthatarenotunderpower,includingsailboatsundersail,canoesandkayaks.

Youshouldstayoutofthewayofcommercialorworkingboats.

Thepropelleronaboatcanspinforseveralsecondsafterthemotorisoffandcancauseseriousorfatalinjuriestoanyonewhocomesincontactwithit.Thatiswhyyoucounttoten.

Swimmersinthewatercanbehitbythepropeller.

Rememberthatitisgrossly negligent – and prohibited – for passengers to sit on the bow, gunwales, stern or swim platform whiletheboatismoving.Theycaneasilyslipintothewaterandbehitbythepropeller.Werecommendthatnopassengersitonthebow,gunwales,sternorswimplatformwhenthemotorison.(Add details for specific type of boat; for example, particular danger of sitting on the front of a pontoon boat and slipping between the pontoons.)

Werecommendthatyoudoa“headcount”andpostalookouttomakesureallpassengersaresafelyinsidetheboatbeforestartingthemotor.

There’sanotherreasontostayoutoftheawarenesszonewhilethemotorison.AllgasolineenginesandgeneratorsproduceCarbonMonoxide,orCO–agasthatcanbelethal.

CarbonMonoxideisodorless, colorless and tasteless.Itcanaccumulateindangerousconcentrationsevenoutdoors.

Alwaysturnoffallinternalcombustionenginesbeforegoingswimmingorengaginginotherwateractivitiesneartheboat.

Keep swimmers awayfromareasinwhichCOmightaccumulate,evenafterthemotorhasbeenstopped–suchasunderswimplatforms,neartheengineandneargeneratorexhausts.

Neverallowanyonetoholdontotheswimplatformforaride(“teaksurfing”or“platformdragging”).

SymptomsofCOpoisoningincludeirritatedeyes,headache,nausea,weaknessanddizziness.Thesesymptomsareoftenconfusedwithseasickness,intoxicationorhangovers;somakesuretoseekmedicalattentionunlessyouaresureCOisnotthecause.

Passengerswhoarestandingormovingaroundtheboatmaynotexpectthesuddenmotionsthatcanoccurwithaccelerating,turningorcrossingthewakeofanotherboat,andmaylosetheirbalance.

Theremaybeobstaclesintheboatoronthedeck(e.g.theribsinanopenfishingboat,lines,tackle,cleats)overwhichapassengermaytrip.

Slipsandfallscancauseinjurieswithintheboatorcanresultinafalloverboard.

Theboatoperatorshouldstrivetoaccelerateandstopsmoothlyandgradually.

Ifpassengersmustmovearoundtheboat,theyshouldstay in contact with the boatatalltimes,keepingafirmgriponahandrailorothersolidpartoftheboat.

Itisneversafetositinaswivelingcastingchairofafishingorbassboatwhiletheboatisinmotion.

Ifsomeoneshouldfalloverboard,usethisrecoveryprocedure.
