2015 Governor’s Economic & Education Summit

Breakout Session: Retaining College Students

Most studies show that the best predictor of a city or state’s future economic success has to do with the number

of young people with college degrees living there.– Edward Glaeser, Harvard economist: “There is a very strong track record of

places that attract talent becoming places of long-term success…The most successful economic development policy is to attract and retain smart people and then get out of their way.”

– Enrico Moretti, UC-Berkeley economist: “For every college graduate who takes a job in an innovation industry, five additional jobs are eventually created in that city, such as for waiters, carpenters, doctors, architects and teachers.”

Why is this Important?

Michigan’s struggles to retain college graduates make this issue particularly important.

– In 2010, only 50% of Michigan’s recent college graduates were projected to stay in the state. • By 2012, the number jumped up to 63%.

Michigan’s College Graduate Retention Rate

The MEDC’s Talent Enhancement/Pure Michigan Talent Connect team have a number of programs and efforts in

place to help Michigan retain this target audience.– The MEDC attends various career fairs across the state and even out-of-state

to help retain and attract college students, recent graduates, and young professionals, with a focus on Engineering and IT talent.• At these career fairs, we promote Pure Michigan Talent Connect as a

way to connect with Michigan jobs along with a number of other resources.

What the MEDC is doing to Reverse the Trend

The MEDC also runs a Pure Michigan Talent Connect Student Ambassador program.

– The Student Ambassador program gives students from any college across the state or even country to be the MEDC’s voice on campus and to promote Michigan as a great place to live, work, and play for students, recent graduates, and young professionals. • Currently, there are 134 active Student Ambassadors on 35 different

campuses (10 out-of-state)

Lastly, the Talent Team partners with a number of place-making organizations throughout the state who share a

goal of attracting and retaining college students.

Studies have shown that an essential ingredient in positioning Michigan for future success is creating places

where talented young professionals want to live.

So while participating companies focus on work-related aspects of the summer experience, our Program brings together thousands of interns to experience and explore the city, meet new friends, have fun, do some networking and begin to

form bonds that will convince them that their futures are in Detroit!

“I thought this was a great program and suggest it to anyone who is working in the area. It is a great way to provide a positive perspective of Detroit and help keep the city growing. I hope this program is around for a long time because it not only changed my perspective, but persuaded me and left an impact!”

“I wanted to thank you for the wonderful event last night. As an intern in the city this summer, each day I’m more and more excited about what’s going on down here. Events like the one last night only further pushes my desire to work in Detroit.”

“Thank you for including our Element PR summer interns in the After 5 Intern Program. Our interns constantly communicated to me how valuable the experiences they gained through your program are and will continue to be in their future endeavors. I saw culture changes in their viewpoints and perceptions from the one-of-a-kind experience your program provides! Thank you again for giving interns an outlet to learn and grow in ways they might not otherwise have.”
