What grade does this player deserve?

What is gamification? Using gaming terms in

problems/units

Creating a grading system based off of game concepts

Gamification is Students Agency and

control over class choices

Mastering concepts through trials

Gamification Fundamentals Based on established education practices

Mastery Based Learning Student Agency in Education Operant Conditioning Group Work (Ask more!)

Mastery Based Learning The ability to progress and reach higher levels

only after mastering previous.

How to apply mastery to the classroom

Students cannot progress in Assessments of a section until they master the previous section Content can progress normally

D2L: Lock assessments until students pass previous assessments

Advantage: Able to easily notice struggling students

Student Agency in Education In Video Games students are always given choices of

the difficulty in a game

Achievement Always able to complete the story at the easy level Achievements and Harder modes are extra features

Students want to perform the challenges Students want to compete with friends

Applying Achievements to classes Tier Class assignments

Basic Required assignments for all students Extra assignments per unit to get more

points/achievements Achievements vs. Points

Extra Work= points What is the incentive Extra Work=Badges/achievement what is the

incentive

Operant Conditioning

Operant Conditioning in Video Games

Applying Operant Conditioning to Class Apply positive reinforcement techniques to the

grading system of the class Apply positive reinforcement throughout the class Always make next steps for student achievement

Grading in games Set a minimum skill you

are willing to accept (not a percent but a

measurable basic level) If the students has more

work to do, do not give a letter grade

The student always has more to do

Attainable short-term benchmarks need to be built in Always something else

to work towards Failure is not punished,

but just part of feedback Early mistakes are not

held to the same level as more complex mistakes

Gamified Assignments Low risk = low reward Points can be earned by

risking little for long periods or risking much for shorter time

Not every assignment has a clear end or clear maximum

Parts are designed for only the best players who are rewarded for their skill

Skipping these parts has no negative consequences to less skilled players
