Letter From The Publisher Greetings to our readers and advertisers! Winter weather isn’t the only thing heating up as we publish this issue — the March 4th primaries are heading our way! It’s more important than ever to elect conservatives into office, and this is a great opportunity to invite candidates to share their views. We are honored to feature four hopefuls who are running for the Texas House out of District 132: Justin Perryman, Mike Scho-field, Ann Hodge and Michael Franks. Read ahead as they speak from the heart. We also share community news in our expanded social column, “The
Buzz About Katy.” Our active community is supportive of so many causes, and it’s wonderful to share such uplifting events. As always, we include articles from our contributing writers, including our “Dear Doctor” column, student profiles, a pastor profile and more! We hope you enjoy this issue, and that it further spreads “family-friendly news with an eternal purpose.” That is our ultimate mission in each and every issue.
May You Be Richly Blessed,Joseph R. Menslage

Letter From The Editor The months of February and March are particularly endearing as we celebrate Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. It just so happens that my own sister’s family (and their dog) experienced an incredible journey of “lost and found,” which we dubbed “Puppy Love” — a twist on the traditional Valentine’s love story, all wrapped up in “fur.” It made an extra special hero out of Sheriff ’s Deputy Stephen Jimenez (and caused such a social media stir)… and we just had to share it! We also located an Irish Katyite who uncovered some remarkable discoveries on her family tree. We feature her and her daughter on our cover, and it turns out that the Irish had quite a bit to do with the found-
ing of our country. Read our cover story to see how the television show “Who Do You Think You Are?” ultimately led to their membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. We also share a different “take” on our Pastor Profile, this time featuring an ordained min-ister who serves Katy in a business suit. Enjoy this and more as our February/March issue hits the stands. We hope it blesses you and your families.

Sammy Vela is a sports fan who has always been surrounded by great cooking. He learned in his “mama’s kitchen” at an early age what it meant to “cook with love.” Exceptional cuisine became his passion, and he always knew that someday he’d be a restaurateur. “It was a calling,” says Sammy, who credits his desire to serve others and his passion for great
food. He learned restaurant management from the ground up as a teenager after accepting his first “official” job at a fast-food estab-lishment – and never looked back. “I learned about speed, efficiency and service, and took those skills to other restaurants,” he says. Most notably, he was employed at Outback over the course of 15 years. His plan was to “piece it all together” and discover the secret of how (and how not) to operate a restaurant. He realized that customers simply wanted a night out to mingle or just to escape the pressures of the office. He opened Sammy’s Sports Grill (formerly Stadia Sports Grill) in Villagio to the delight of Katyites who wanted a local place to dine, watch games on big screen televisions, and enjoy a family-friendly environment. “We are your home away from home—and we do the cooking for you,” he says, noting that it really is all about family. His wife Berta and
their daughters Koryn and Lexi often stop by to help with the family owned and operated enterprise. He and his family attend Trinity Baptist Church and thank God for the success of his business. The restaurant industry is challenging and competitive, and Sammy has invested as much prayer as he has equity into Sammy’s Sports Grill. He’s also a supporter of commu-nity events and charities, and is pictured (wearing the pink shirt) at the Chris Saiz Point the Way foundation Golf Tournament. Katyites love football, baseball, soccer, wrestling and more… and Sammy endeavors to ensure his Sports Grill is the go-to location for a great social environment… and his famous wings! He invites friends and neighbors to pressure down, kick back, and enjoy the game. “Hang out with friends, celebrate a special occasion, and enjoy food you can share,” he says. Check out his website at www.sammys-sportsbarandgrill.com.

They say we’re all Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but for some it’s a year-round honor. Meet a family that recently discovered the depth of their Irish roots — with
a surprising link to the American Revolution! Holly McCarthy Chervnsik knew she was Irish, but never dreamed the McCarthy clan could be traced back to nobility. She as-sumed her ancestors would be linked to the mass starvation, disease and emigration of the Great Potato Famine between 1845 and 1852. Her father, Austin Terry McCarthy, often said, “Don’t dig too far into the family tree… you’ll probably find a bunch of horse thieves!” But this couldn’t have been further from the truth, as she was about to discover.
From the Kings of Munster Holly decided to investigate her lineage after watching the popular television show Who Do You Think You Are, and began unrav-eling a remarkable story of culture, heritage and faith. “My husband Robert comes from Eastern European stock (Czech), and I come from Western European stock (mostly Celtic), and I wanted to sort
it all out for our 9-year-old daughter Nadia,” she says. She began a patriarchal search and entered her fa-ther’s name into the ancestry.com data-base. Like a sleuth, she began connect-ing the “leaves” and followed along as centuries of history unfolded. Soon it was apparent that the Emerald Isle was tied to the shores of America
in amazing ways, especially as the 13 colonies geared up for a Revo-lution against the King of England. It all started with Major Dennis Riley McCarty, who was born in Cork County Ireland in 1649. He was a descendent of the Kings of Munster who had ruled southern Ireland since the dawn of time. As an immigrant to the American colonies, he fought in the Susque-hanna War of 1676 and married Elizabeth Hawkins Billington (who was also Irish). Upon his death in 1694 in Richmond County, Virginia, he left behind two minor children, daughter Catherine and

son Daniel, who was born in 1679.
A Family of Early Episcopalians Daniel became a military Captain, Speaker of the House of Burgesses, an esquire, and a volunteer in the Episcopalian Church. He married Elizabeth Pope and acquired land, a large library and multiple houses. His gravestone reads, “Here lyeth the body of Daniel McCarty, who departed this life the forth of May, 1724, in the forty-fifth year of his age. He was endowed with many virtues and good qualifi-
cations, but the actions proceeding from them bespeak their praise.” Daniel’s son Dennis (who was named after his grandfather) was born in Richmond, Virginia. Dennis was a leader in the patriotic cause in Virginia. As a colonel, he command-ed a regimen in the Revolutionary War of 1776 and married Sarah Ball, a first cousin to George Washington (who would later become the nation’s first president). “My daughter was really excited to find this link, especially since our discovery nearly coincides with President’s Day on February 17,” says Holly.
Daughters of the American Revolution With documentation including immigra-tion and military records, Holly was able to register both herself and Nadia as Daughters of the American Revolution. Now thoroughly addicted to ancestry.com, she discovered that an extra “h” was added to the spelling of
“McCarty” between the years 1740 and 1785, further Americanizing the name. But she also began researching maternal bloodlines and various branches of her family tree. Incredibly, Holly was able to document a total of 15 ancestral grandfathers with different European roots, who all served in the American Revolution. She submitted these entries to the Daughters of the American Revolution for the sake of her daughter and future grandchildren. “It’s so gratifying to know my family served our country, and that they fought on the side of liberty,” she notes. “It’s

an example of “God and Country” that I’ve shared with Nadia, who will someday use our research for a school project.”
Proud Parents As Holly uncovered each new ancestor and their role in Ameri-can history, she shared the information with her parents, Terry and Ellen McCarthy. “My Mom and Dad are on cloud nine,” notes Holly. “It’s very special that they are learning about our ancestors at this stage, because they’ve literally waited a lifetime to understand
who we are as an extended clan.” Plus, her father has a tattoo of a shamrock with the name McCar-thy printed on a scroll across it, and now has some bragging rights to go along with it! Of course, it will take another year or so to fully unravel her mother’s side of the family, but Holly is now researching a slew of 17th great-grandfathers and working her way from AD back to BC. Who knows, she may someday discover additional ances-tors who also served during the American Revolu-tion. In the meantime, she’s grateful to see the rich culture of her Irish people and the strong roots that have shaped her DNA — and the nation.

As the March 4 primary fast approaches, four local candidates are vying for the hearts and minds of families in Katy, Cy-Fair and parts of Houston. At stake is the District 132 Repub-lican seat in the Texas House of Representatives, which will be vacated when State Representa-
tive Bill Callegari retires. We invited this notable slate of contenders to weigh in on the issues and speak from the heart. We feature each in the order of the Harris County Republican Party ballet draw: Justin Perryman, Mike Schofield, Ann Hodge and Michael Franks — and wish them well in their run for office!
Justin Perryman
Hi, I’m Justin Perryman, a practicing small business attorney and a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas Army National Guard. I have devoted my life to serving others and want to extend that service to Texans who live, work, worship and raise families in District 132. I care deeply about our district and my goal is to become your next Texas House Representative. Why vote for me? Many political leaders talk about leadership and service. I have lived it by serving our nation as a U.S. Army veteran, military attorney and soldier. I deployed twice in the Middle East and Afghanistan and am trained to navigate a complex legal system. I am a candidate who fully understands how proposed legislation in Austin (and Washington) will affect our lives and future. On my honor, I will vote in favor of laws that benefit the families and businesses in District 132. As a local resident and voter, I’ve been politically active for over a decade with the Katy Area Republicans, the Tea Party, and as campaign manager for retiring State Representative Bill Callegari. Recently the National Rifle Association gave me an “A” rating for my stance on responsible gun ownership and strong support of the 2nd Amendment. Most importantly, I’m the proud father of two sons, both enrolled in Katy ISD, and want the best possible future for all our children. As a true conservative, both fiscally and socially, I believe “govern-ment that governs less, governs best.” Along with most Texans, I share the sentiment that heavy-handed government has no place in our lives, with Obamacare as a prime example.
I stand for:• Pro-Business, Pro-Jobs
• 2nd Amendment Rights• Cost-Effective Education and School Choice• Pro-Life Initiatives• Family and Faith Initiatives• Strong Local Leadership• Support of our Military
I stand against:• Burdensome Government regulation• Unfair Tax Burden on the Middle Class and Small Businesses• Weak Borders, Drugs, Human Trafficking• Gun Control
With your help I will represent the good people of District 132 at the State Capitol. As the best-qualified Republican candidate, my mis-sion is to safeguard our future liberties, preserve our uniquely indepen-dent Texas heritage, and ensure our district remains an ideal place to raise our families. Your voice matters. Your vote matters. What issues do you face in District 132? What is working? What can be improved? Please email info@justinperrymanfortexas.com and visit www.justinperrymanfor-texas.com to support my campaign.
Mike Schofield We live in very trying times. Our core beliefs of individual liberty, personal responsibility and tradition-al family values are under constant attack. The shame of it is that one of the primary attackers is the same federal government that was set up to protect our traditional values and way of life. From Obamacare, in which the federal government is taking away the right of our families to make their own health insurance decisions, to attacks on state’s laws limiting abortions, to constant attempts to undermine our Second Amendment rights to own a gun, our own government is attacking our freedoms. We need to defend the Consti-tutional system of state’s rights and individual liberty while we still can. When President Obama pushed states to give up control over their budgets by vastly expanding Medicaid, it was Texas that stood up and said “No.” Our Texas legislature is one of the main bulwarks that can stand up to protect our freedoms. We need leaders in the Texas legislature who know how to stand up to the federal government and to those who would expand our state government by spending more of your hard-earned money – and who know how to win. For the past six sessions of the legislature, I served as an advisor to Governor Perry. I was his lead advisor on the Voter ID bill, which will

help insure fair elections; the eminent domain bills that protect your private property rights; tort reform; and the Tenth Amendment bills that seek to protect us from federal attacks on the rights of states and the people. As a result of this work over the past decade, I am the one candi-date with the experience and the expertise to be effective in defending our rights in the legislature from the very first day. I know how the leg-islature works and I know how to get things done. That is why I have been endorsed by Texas Right to Life and Texans for Lawsuit Reform. They have seen what I have already done while working for the Gov-ernor and they know how much more I can do as your representative to fight to keep government from encroaching on our rights. You don’t have to wonder if I will really do what I promised – I’ve already been hard at work doing it. I would greatly appreciate your support and your vote to be your state representative. Ann Hodge
I am running for office because the people of Katy deserve a conser-vative leader with deep roots in our community who will get results for them in the Texas legislature. I am proud to be a pro-life, pro-family, pro-Second Amendment conserva-tive who is guided by Paul’s words in Galatians 6: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if
we do not give up.” I have done my best to apply that philosophy in every endeavor, and it has driven my efforts to improve our community over the past 30 years. As the President and CEO of the Katy Chamber of Commerce for nearly 15 years, I have dedicated my career to bringing jobs and opportunity to our area. When it comes to the economy, I know that government’s role is to create an environment where employers are free to flourish – then get out of the way. As a fiscal conservative, I believe that Texas can and must live within its means. I will go to Austin to fight for low taxes, Truth in Budgeting and responsible spending so that our economy remains the best in the nation. I will also fight for wise investments in infrastruc-ture, like our roads and water supply, because government should do a few things and do them well. We need to fund critical transportation projects with a stable source of revenue that doesn’t leave future generations under a mountain of debt. As a member of the Katy ISD Education Foundation Board of Directors and the Board of Regents for Pope John XXIII High School, I know how important good schools are to our community. In fact, our outstanding school districts are a top reason so many people continue to move here. But we can make them even better by empow-ering local parents and teachers with more control and restoring sanity to the state’s testing standards. And we should also expand charter schools and vocational programs, so that every child is ready for college or a career after graduation.
To me, the chance to serve as your state representative is simply the next step in a lifetime devoted to making our community a better place to live, work and raise a family. And if you elect me, I promise you I will never grow weary in doing good. Please visit www.hodgefor-texas.com.
Michael Franks
As a Christian, Christ should be the center of politics – Everything else comes second. I was raised in a small, old fashioned community on the edge of Wharton County in Newgulf, Texas. It was an idyllic upbringing, kind of like “Leave it to Beaver” meets “Mayberry”. My parents had me later in life, giving me the privilege of being reared by the “Greatest Generation.” We were
taught America’s greatness was: God, Honor, & Duty. My grandfather was a well-known preacher and theologian in the 1940s - 1960s. I was saved at the age of 10. But, as a teenager around 18, I felt a tug at the heart and reconfirmed my salvation. While some young people go off to college and go the wrong direction, I went the right direction, deepening my faith in Christ. Christianity shaped my political worldview. Many politicians check off surveys and “say all the right things.” The Bible talks about those who want to “tickle ears” with what people want to hear, but are not truly grounded in any core ideology. The founding fathers were grounded in their faith, crediting God as the basis of the American Republic. It’s time we sent those with the same vision, resolve and fortitude to Austin. The battle for the soul of our nation is raging, and I have done my best to have an impact. I spearheaded the statewide, get-out-the-vote effort for the successful Texas Marriage Amendment in 2005, defining Marriage between “One Man and One Woman.” I have stood in rallies with fellow pro-lifers against planned parenthood and the evil abortion lobby. As a part of US BorderWatch, I have stood on the steps of the Capitol speaking out against illegal immigration. I stand for Property tax reform. It is immoral for government to keep taxing us for the “right” to live in our own homes. My family are active members of Central Baptist Church and the music ministry. Prior, long time choir member at Second Baptist. Stacy, my wife, has played the guitar and been a praise team leader and Sunday school teacher. I own the Texas GOP Store, servicing Republican campaigns across Texas, like US Senator Ted Cruz as well as US Senator Rand Paul. Signs of Easter is our secondary business. We are in Christian bookstores nationally, including LifeWay, Members of the Inter-national Christian Bookstore Association and manufacture the “He is Risen!” Easter Crosses. By Dr. Jean Ekwenibe
As we age, our bodies and healthcare needs change. This can lead to concerns, and this “Dear Doctor” column is devoted to an-swering question patients may have regarding the tie between menopause and heart disease.
Dear Doctor, I have gone through menopause and am concerned about my health...
Question: Am I now at increased risk for heart disease? Why?
Answer: Menopause occurs when a woman’s monthly cycle comes to an end and she is no longer able to reproduce. As we get older, we all have increased risk for heart disease, but this risk is more evident in women who have gone through menopause. Many doctors and sci-entists believe that pre-menopausal women who are able to produce estrogen have a protective effect against heart disease; this is partly due to the ability of estrogen to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol). After menopause, estrogen levels sig-nificantly decrease and the risk of coronary heart disease in a woman becomes equivalent with a man’s risk.
Question: Should I take estrogen replacement?
Answer: Several studies have taken a closer look to determine
whether post-menopausal women benefit from estrogen replace-ment therapy in order to prevent cardiovascular disease. Two notable research studies were the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replace-ment study (HERS) and the Women’s Health Initiative Estrogen Plus Progestin Study (WHI). Both studies showed no benefit from hormone replacement regarding cardiovascular risk and rather revealed increased harm. The harmful side effects included increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, breast cancer and pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). As a result of these findings from the HERS and WHI studies, hormone therapy is no longer recom-mended to prevent coronary heart disease in women, and doctors are guided to treat symptoms of menopause with the lowest dose of hormones for the shortest amount of time.
Question: How do I lower my risk for heart disease?
Answer: Following a healthy lifestyle and minimizing the risk factors associated with coronary heart disease will help to significantly lower your risk over time. This includes good nutrition, regular exercise, smoking cessation, normal blood pressure measurements, and low cholesterol levels. It is important to meet with a doctor regularly for a thorough assessment and to talk about your personal risks.

Although we generally envision pastors laboring behind the pulpit, some clergy work in the secular world. Meet one
man of the cloth who serves in a business suit. Henry Dibrell is an ordained minis-ter who can perform marriages, baptisms and administer sacraments. But at this point in his career he is best known as a Katy ISD school board member and executive director of the Amobi Okoye Foundation. As a youth, all Dibrell wanted to do was serve God. He felt he could do this best by leading and achieving. His mother had a third grade education and his stepfather made it to the eighth grade. “It is because my parents lacked academically that they pushed, prodded and encouraged me to get my college degree and become what I am today,” he says.
Dibrell earned a B. S. in marketing and then answered the call to ministry. He be-came licensed at Turning Point Ministries International in 1993. Soon afterward he became a Certified Behavioral Counselor at The Institute for Motivational Living. He accepted a position as Executive Pastor of Heights Assembly of God and was respon-sible for event planning, grant preparation, financial management, marketing, as well as ecclesiastical duties. His service there led to a position as the Executive Director of the Kingdom Builders Prayer Institute oversee-ing marketing, public/community relations, database management, and program design. He knew that one day he would one day put his Christian values to good use in politics. As an African American who is a fiscally and socially conservative, he hopes his example will inspire others to uphold traditional American values. He and his wife Delia encourage scholastic excellence in their four children, and Dibrell’s non-profit work impacts children in our com-munity and around the world.

Did anyone snap pictures of snow in Katy? These winter freez-ing spells have closed schools and sent shivers up our spines. But how wonderful to see snow in our neck
of the woods! Share your photos and we’ll include them in our next issue. Calling all heroes! Do you know of someone who has accomplished something amazing on behalf of others? This can include men, women, children — or even a brave dog, cat, horse or bird! We’d like to hear about it and give them a shout out. Just send us photos and a brief descrip-tion. Perhaps we’ll even feature them in an article! Are you a part of a group or organization? Do you attend networking meetings? Have you had fun at a recent event or community gathering? Send us photos of small groups with captions, and we’ll try to include it in our social column! Do you have a story of faith and courage? Do you know of someone with a remarkable Christian testimony? Submit stories of local Godly men and women who inspire others — and we’ll con-sider it for a future feature. Also email us their contact information
(phone, email address) so we can follow up with them. Lastly, we love to hear about your favorite Christian music and Christian artists. This can include people of faith who work in film and music. Is there a new trending band or faith-based film you’ve recently seen? Let us know! Email your submissions to editor@katychristianmagazine.com. We’d love to hear from you!

Carol’s StoryI always thought I had a thyroid problem. Ever since the first set of symptoms started revealing themselves, which began right after the birth of our third child, I knew something was off. Exhaustion began to slowly creep up on me until it finally consumed me. It was draining. I have never experienced anything quite like it. No matter how many naps I took or how long I slept, it was still there. At first I blamed the fact that I was raising three children and holding down a full time job…who wouldn’t be exhausted? Then the next phase of symptoms began to roll in. I was cold all the time! It would be August in Texas and I’d be wearing a jacket to work. My hair and eyebrows began to thin out. Oh, and the brain fog. I honestly thought my memory loss was the first sign that I had Alzheimer’s. Over coffee with a friend, something I was consuming way too much of, I discussed with her what was happening to me. She said that it sounded like a thyroid issue, something I had always thought. Naturally, I went to my doctor, explained my symptoms and told him that I thought I was hypothyroid. He ran some tests, took blood work and scheduled my recheck. Two weeks later he told me that my blood work was normal. “But I don’t feel normal,” I told him. “Are you sure those results are right?” His answer was “yes,” and he offered me a prescription for an antidepressant. I told him, “No way!” While online, I stumbled upon the Hotze Health & Wellness Center website. It felt like it was written for me. I discovered that they used an innovative approach in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. I scheduled my appointment and was blown away by their professionalism. They explained to me that my symptoms were very common in women in my age group. They discovered that I had an imbalance in my female hormones that adversely affected my body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. I was prescribed bio-identical progesterone, estrogen and natural thyroid medication.
Within two months, my life was transformed. My energy was back. I can keep up with my kids, husband and job. My fading memory returned to normal and I was finally able to sleep soundly again. I got my life back! If this sounds like something you or someone you love has been experiencing, it’s not “all in your head” and you don’t have to just deal with it as a part of getting older.

With Valentine’s Day upon us, two high school sweethearts are especially thankful for a furry, four-legged friend named Jewlz. This nine-year-old dog, a Boxer, caused a social
media blitz over Thanksgiving, brought several communities together, and also made a special hero out of Sheriff ’s Deputy Stephen Jimenez. The “sweethearts” are Chris and Mark Koehn. If you are an animal advocate, you’ll appreciate their deep devotion to a family pet who survived a harrowing story of “lost and found.”
The Backstory It all started with the Koehn’s first dog, Piper. Chris had always been a “cat person” and was not a big fan of dogs… until Hurricane Katrina swept Katy in 2005. The family prepared to evacuate to their condo in Conroe, but before leaving Mark secured the outside perimeter of their house. That’s when he learned that a litter of Boxer puppies was
about to be abandoned in a neighbor’s garage. Impulsively, he took one of the pups home while other neighbors rescued the rest. When he brought “Piper” through the front door, Chris was caught totally off guard. “I could not believe he brought home a puppy in the middle of a hurricane!” she recalls. “We loaded two
children, three cats, and 8-week-old Piper into our SUV and headed to Con-roe.”
A “Boxer” Fan So thanks to Piper, Chris became a “dog person” – or rather a “Boxer person” – in a big way! She became a supporter of Lone Star Boxer Rescue and learned about Jelwz, who had endured the hard luck life of a stray on the streets of Baytown. Suffering a
broken jaw, she was picked up by the pound and faced euthanasia. Lone Star Boxer Rescue stepped in with a foster family, and when Chris visited the LSBR website she noticed Jewlz’ picture. Both Piper and Jewlz were the same age (nearly two years old) – and it was

love at first sight. The Koehn teens, Carly and Hohlt, quickly turned the fright-ened, broken-jawed vagabond into a sweet, wiggling furry friend. Once healed of heartworms, Jewlz was living the good life amidst a family who treated her and Piper like “man’s best friends.”
Thanksgiving Torment Fast forward to Thanksgiving 2013. Daughter Carly (now 23) was an animal paramedic living in East Bernard. Son Hohlt (20) was away at college in Hawaii. Chris and Mark had sold their empty nest and downsized to the same condo that spared them from Hurricane Katrina. Rather than boarding their “geriatric”
dogs, (now nearly nine years old) during a Thanksgiving vacation to Arkansas, they left them with Carly in East Ber-nard. Imagine how Carly must have felt coming home from work to find her gate in ruins. Piper had remained in the backyard… but Jewlz was missing. Per-haps her old street habits kicked in, for apparently she had crashed the gate to chase a deer or other wild animal. Carly had the horrible task of informing her parents, who abruptly turned around and headed
back. Chris was hysterical. She and Mark walked the backwoods in freezing rain with a flashlight — all night, every night, the entire
week. They appealed to family and friends to spread the word. Two days went by, then three. There was
no turkey dinner, for the Koehn family was too caught up in the search for Jewlz… and
too busy hoping for a miracle.
Prayers and Posts Chris and Mark’s son, Hohlt, prayed long distance from Hawaii and posted Jewlz’ reward poster on Face-
book to all his old friends in Katy. Other Facebook posts appeared from residents in East Bernard, Conroe, Houston, Austin, Katy,
Fulshear, Sugar Land and beyond. Soon the image of Jewlz in her pink collar went viral. Over 1,000 shares
occurred on social media, including posts from nearly every rescue group in the Houston area and many through-
out the state. It was obvious that an exponential amount of prayers from perfect strangers went up for the poor dog. Chris and Mark plastered East Bernard with flyers and asked postal carriers, UPS de-livery drivers, and animal shelters to keep a look out. They also called the Wharton County Sheriff ’s Department.
Hero Deputy Stephen Jimenez Five days into Jewlz’ disappearance, the Koehn’s headed back to Conroe exhausted, defeated and utterly devastated. But that same day, Deputy Stephen Jimenez went to the East Bernard Sonic for lunch. He had already heard about Jewlz and couldn’t help but notice a “lost Boxer” poster taped to the drive-thru menu. Making his rounds later that day, he spotted a dog limping along seven miles out of town… wearing a pink collar. Sure enough, the tag said “Jewlz.” He scooped her up and called Chris and Mark. The Koehn’s (and Piper) headed back to East Bernard, an hour and a half drive from Conroe. Deputy Jimenez waited for them while still on his rounds and was dispatched to a call. Jewlz rode shotgun,

for he wasn’t about to let her out of his sight! After they all met up, Chris and Mark realized how deeply Jewlz had suffered. The freezing rain, the lack of food and shelter, and the miles she roamed had nearly done her in. Her legs were swollen and the pads on her feet were tattered. Part of her ear was missing and she had a gash on one flank.
Miraculous Recovery Mark put her in the back-seat with Piper as Chris hugged Deputy Jimenez, thanking him for being their hero. Had he not been so vigilant, Jewlz would have died lost and all alone. As they headed back to Conroe, Mark noticed Jewlz wasn’t moving and feared she had passed away. Piper kept nudging her. They pulled over, felt a heart beat, and consulted with their vet by cell phone. Jewlz was in shock and needed hydration, warmth, rest and healing. Chris notes that Jewlz’ is one tough dog to survive five days of the cold, wet weather in the wilderness of East Bernard. She re-cuperated with a clean bill of health and her spirits bounced back,
although her muzzle and forehead whit-ened noticeably.
A Grateful, Loving Family “I want to thank my family and friends for all their outreach on Face-book. I wish I could hug every single person who helped find Jewlz,” says Chris. “Good people like Paige Hol-sapple and other animal rescuers took a personal interest. Justin Perryman, who is running for office in my former district, took the time to post Jewlz’ poster and help find her, which was brought to my attention by my son in Hawaii! Isn’t it amazing how Facebook connects us all across the miles?” Katy Christian Magazine also posted her photo, as did some area businesses. The Wharton County Sheriff ’s Department shared the news of her rescue. Dozens of people checked up to see how she was doing after she was miraculously found. A few weeks after Jewlz came
home, the Koehn’s celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary. Jewlz rang in Christmas and New Year’s with the family. Now at Valen-tine’s, the Koehn’s rejoice in sharing their “puppy love” story and note that they are very, very blessed.

West Katy Netweavers, a Katy-based business network-ing group, has partnered with Trees for Houston. The goal? To provide shade at a low-
income student camp. Camp Eagle at Faith West Academy’s LakeW-est Park underwent a flurry of activity in November as volunteers added native Texas trees and shade for camp participants. Community business support and partnerships throughout the greater Katy and Hous-ton area made it possible, including Green Grove Group Sustainability Solutions, a Houston-based sustainability integration and consulting firm. According to Green Grove Group’s president and West Katy Netweavers’ founder Tajana Me-sic, “Being a good corporate citizen starts at home through giving back in our own community. By work-ing together with Trees for Houston and Faith West Academy, we hope to raise awareness of environmental sustainability while providing a last-ing benefit to the Houston and Fort Bend County communities.” Trees for Houston Executive Director Barry J. Ward says, “Trees For Houston is glad to see organizations and businesses like West Katy Netweavers and Green Grove Group working at the grass roots level to enhance our community and leading by example.” The tree planting brought together a diverse team of business leaders from the Katy, Fulshear and Houston areas to plant, mulch and stake a grove of native Texas trees in three hours. By planting local native trees, the community helps to increase air quality, decreased run off and
provide beautification for surroundings in the Katy area. Faith West’s Public Relations Director Kirk Rightmire notes, “Faith West Academy and Community Center has positioned itself to bless and provide resources for tomorrow’s leaders. Through education, athlet-ics, training, job placement, summer camp programs and a facility avail-able to the community at little or no cost, our goal is to change lives.” The trees will provide fun, shade and beauty to the kids of Faith West, Camp West and Camp Eagle for generations to come.
