Razorback Traditions
A MASCOT LIKE NO OTHERThe wild hogs known as razorbacks native to the Arkansas wilderness bear no resemblance to the typical barnyard pig o
today. The untamed razorback hog was a lean, eral animal that was ill-tempered. It ought and deeated anything that crossedits path, man or beast. Turn o the 20th century outdoor magazines lauded the razorback as the most intelligent o all thehogs and is likewise the most courageous. . . . He has a clear, arseeing eye.
Except or the rare sighting in the Australian Outback, the Razorback only exists today in the orm o Arkansas player
and ans. A Russian boar, which closely resembles the wild hog o Hugo Bezdeks day, currently serves as the ocial live mascot.
Tusk III is cared or by the Stokes amily o Dardanelle, Ark., and travels to home games and special events or the Razorbacks. Tusk III is supported by the legacy program known as the Tusk Fund, and ans can participate by sending their supporcare o the Razorback Foundation, Inc. Tusk III made his debut in 2010 ater the unexpected passing o his brother, Tusk IIollowing Arkansas AutoZone Liberty Bowl win over ECU in January.
While yearbook reerences as early as 1914 o a hog on the sideline at ootball games, a ormal live mascot prior to theTusk line dates back to the 1960s with a series o hogs that represented Arkansas. In addition to appearances at games, theyhave gained a reputation or erce behavior.
Big Red III escaped rom an exhibit near Eureka Springs in the summer o 1977 and ravaged the countryside beore beinggunned down by an irate armer. Another live mascot, Ragnar, was a wild hog captured in south Arkansas by Leola armerBill Robinson. Beore Ragnars spree was done, the mighty animal had killed a coyote, a 450-pound domestic pig and sevenrattlesnakes. Ragnar died in 1978 o unknown causes.
THE HOG HATIt is true; no Razorback ans closet is complete without an o-
cial Hog Hat. The original style was a hard plastic hat with a longsnout, rough razorback ridges across the top and wickedly sharp, pointed curly-cue tail. The modern versions are oten sculpted romsoter material. Regardless, the Hog Hat is undoubtedly the mostrecognized piece o an apparel in college athletics. Just ask ESPNGameDays Kirk Herbstreit as he dons the traditional Hog Hat.

RUNNING THROUGH THE AFor Razorback ootball players, there is nothing to
compare with entering the stadium or a home Arkan-sas game. The emotion o running through the A stayswith a player or lie.
Loyd Phillips won the Outland Trophy more thanthree decades ago. The veteran o the 1964 nationalchampionship team, Phillips remembers it like it was yes-
terday. The butterfies are fowing and you are [running],but it doesnt eel like your eet are even touching theground, the 1966 Outland winner recalls.
Two-time Doak Walker Award winner and two-timeHeisman runner-up Darren McFadden agrees.
It is hard to describe the eeling you get as a Razor-back player right beore you take the eld or a game,McFadden said. You can hear more than 70 thousandans calling the Hogs and can eel the excitement build-ing. I will always remember that special eeling o run-ning through the A.
The Razorback Marching Band sets the stage by orm-
ing a huge A as they march the length o the eld play-ing Arkansas Fight. When they nish, the A stretchesrom the Razorback locker room to mideld. To the roaro the crowd and the band blasting out Arkansas Fight, the current Razorbacks run onto the eld through theA, connecting them to generations o previous men inthe Cardinal and White.
Just to be able to run through that A and hear theans cheer or you is unbelievable, 1989 All-Americanoensive tackle Jim Mabry said. To sit in the stands now,I still get chill bumps every time the band starts playingand I see the guys running out.
Razorback TraditionsA PROPER HOG CALL
A chant o Woo Pig Sooie is known worldwide asa Hog Call. Just like any good tradition, there are lots oversions o the Hog Call (even spellings).
A properly executed Hog Call is composed o threecalls, slowly raising ones arms rom the knees to abovethe head during the Woo. Traditionalists prescribe aneight second Woo. The ngers should be wiggled andthe Woo should build in volume and pitch as the armsrise.
Upon completion o the Woo, both arms arebrought straight down with sts clinched as i executinga chin-up while yelling, Pig. The right arm is extendedup and out with the Sooie.
A ull Hog Call -- the kind one will always hear vic-torious Razorback teams execute ater contests -- requirestwo more Hog Calls, ollowed immediately by a Razor-Backs yell, coordinated with a pumping motion o theright arm ater the third Sooie. So, in order, the ullHog Call is:Woooooooo. Pig. Sooie!Woooooooo. Pig. Sooie!Woooooooo. Pig. Sooie!Razorbacks!

Razorback TraditionsARKANSAS FIGHT
One o the rst tasks o a new Razorback is learningto sing the University o Arkansas ght song. ArkansasFight was written in the late 1920s. It is a unique tune, tting o the only college in America with a Razorbackmascot. Several other colleges have adapted the tune, butthe lyrics remain unique to Arkansas.
Hit that line! Hit that line!Keep on going!
Take that ball rightdown the eld!
Give a cheer. Rah! Rah!Never ear. Rah! Rah!
Arkansas will never yield! On your toes, Razorbacks,
to the nish,Carry on with all your might! For its A-A-A-R-K-A-N-S-A-S
or Arkansas!Fight! Fight! Fi-i-i-ight!
RAZORBACK SPIRIT SQUADS
Along with being a Razorback, serving as a Razorbackcheerleader has a long tradition at the University o Ar-kansas. Currently, the Razorbacks have two squads, a Redand White, that inspire the crowds at all home sportingevents.
Arkansas also has a dance team, the Razorback PomSquad, which perorms at haltime o many eventsMembers o the Pom Squad also serve at baseball gamesas RBI Girls. Arkansas has a team o uniormed mascots, led by the original Big Red, the Fighting Razorback. Sue Ejoined the amily along with kid-sized Pork Chop in thelate 1990s. Boss Hog is a 9-oot-tall infatable mascot thatrounds out the team.
Jean Nail serves as the coordinator or cheerleadersand mascots. For more inormation on the cheer squadsand tryouts, go to the Spirit Squad section o ArkansasRa

THE UA ALMA MATER
Brodie Payne and Henry Tovey wrote the Universityo Arkansas Alma Mater in the early 1900s. They wereinspired by the Ozark Mountain sunrise as it illuminatedOld Main.
Pure as the dawn on the brow o thy beauty, Watches thySoul
rom the mountains o God.Over the ates o thy children departed,Far rom the land
where their ootsteps have trod.Beacon o hope in the ways dreary lighted,Pride o our hearts that are loyal and true. From those who adore unto one who
adores us,Mother o Mothers, we sing unto you.
