Japapan a National Team Media Guide
Last summer, the world was thrilled by the action at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. In the tournament, although the Japan national team was narrowly defeated by Paraguay in the Round of 16, the tenacity with which they pulled together to fight won them the support of many spectators. In its competition report, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) pointed out that a notable characteristic of those teams that have made great strides forward was their “quickness in switching between attack and defense” and it listed Japan as an excellent example, together with FIFA World Cup winners Spain and runners up the Netherlands. The report also listed some of the Japan national team’s merits such as its “organized defense” and “wonderful team spirit”. In this way, Japanese football was able to demonstrate a certain level of competitiveness on the international stage.Japan finished the FIFA World Cup with an acceptable result, and a month later the team achieved consecutive wins in friendly matches against Paraguay and Guatemala under Hiromi Hara, who was acting as interim coach. Moreover, in the Kirin Challenge Cup, which was the team’s first game under its new head coach Alberto Zaccheroni, Japan achieved a historic victory over Argentina, a team ranked at No.5 in the world by FIFA. In its next away game against Korea Rep., although unable to achieve an outright victory, Japan kept tormenting its opponents by employing a strong defense coupled with a rapid attack, and the match ended up as a scoreless draw. The confidence and strength Japan picked up during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, plus the effective leadership displayed by Zaccheroni, have inspired the team to greater brilliance and helped the Samurai to play really dynamic and superb football.Meanwhile, Japan under-21 national team, who are aiming to qualify for the London Olympic Games in 2012, is performing every bit as well as the seniors. At the 16th Asian Games (2010/Guangzhou), the U-21 team impressively captured a gold medal, together with the women’s national team “Nadeshiko Japan”. Now that the
youngsters have forged ahead to become the best in Asia, great expectations are building for the future of Japanese football.Looking ahead to the coming year, the first title the Japan national team will aim for is the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011. Japan will enter this tournament following a preparation period lasting a little over a month, and the 2011 event is sure to be even more exciting than that of the previous year, since memories of the FIFA World Cup remain fresh and many Japanese fans and supporters are focusing their attention on how Zaccheroni will lead the team.In order to win this championship of course, as well as in anticipation of the next Olympic Games in two years time and the next FIFA World Cup four years from now, Japan is placing its hope in the rise of its young players. I am looking forward to seeing how the team will evolve in future, and they will give a glimpse of this at the AFC Asian Cup.Japan national team head coach Zaccheroni has said that, “the greatest risk is not taking any risks.” And naturally, Australia, Korea Rep. and DPR Korea, all of whom took part in last year’s FIFA World Cup, as well as the West Asian countries that failed to qualify for the fi nals of that competition, are all aiming for victory in the AFC Asian Cup out of their own sense of national pride. So in order to face such tough competition, it is essential that Japan be prepared to take risks. I believe that the players can make another leap forward by taking their head coach’s words to heart.Japan will have to be prepared to play some tough matches since the other national teams are improving their abilities in line with the reforms of their respective professional leagues in Asia. I expect Japan will put on some world-class performances with a sense of self-awareness and pride as the top team in Asia. At the same time, I want to see the Japan national team fi rmly establish its position in Asia and send the name “SAMURAI BLUE” once again thundering around the world.

The three-legged crow holding a ball is called "Yatagarasu" and represents the god of day, namely, the sun, cited from a classical book of old China. It is believed that the Yatagarasu provided Emperor Jimmu and his army with directions on his expedition to the East and so there is a familiarity with the bird in Japan. The yellow and blue colors of the fl ag represent fair play and youth, respectively, thereby suggesting Japan Football Association's spirit of fairness backed by the vigorous power of youth.

AFC ASIAN CUP QATAR 2011
After the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa tournament, the Japan Football Association (JFA) invited Alberto Zaccheroni to take charge of the Japan national football team, who are nicknamed “SAMURAI BLUE”, as the fi rst-ever Italian head coach in the Japanese football world. Zaccheroni began his coaching career with the amateur league Serie C2 team AS Cesenatico in 1983. After that, he built up a track record of managing clubs in Serie D, C and B before taking over the Serie A team Udinese from the 1995/96 season. In 1997/98, he led Udinese to a third-place fi nish in the Italian League by applying an aggressive style of football with an emphasis on balance. Widespread recognition of his talents led to him being appointed head coach of the prestigious club A.C. Milan in 1998/99, and in his fi rst season, he led the team to win the Scudetto (the Italian league title) and Zaccheroni himself was presented with the Italian Head coach of the Year Award. After moving on from A.C. Milan, he was placed in charge of several other top Italian clubs including F.C. Internazionale Milano and Juventus FC. In Japan, he has raised the performance of SAMURAI BLUE through the poised application of his abilities, honed by his long years of experience.Zaccheroni, who emphasizes maintaining a balance
between attack and defense, has moved ahead with the building up of the SAMURAI BLUE team while energetically observing the J. League. In Japan’s first match under Zaccheroni’s management against Argentina in October 2010, SAMURAI BLUE achieved a historic victory over a powerful team, ranked No. 5 in the world by FIFA.

The Japan national football team “SAMURAI BLUE”, who appointed the Italian Alberto Zaccheroni as its new head coach after the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, faced the powerful Argentina national team at home on October 8. Against this Argentine side, sporting a lineup of world-class players, the Japanese side moved vigorously both in attack and in defense, without skipping a beat, from an early stage in the game, and opened the scoring with a goal by Shinji Okazaki. After going one up, Japan continued to push deep into Argentine territory with numerous quick thrusts that created a succession of goal-scoring opportunities. In defense, Japan remained strong without giving any ground to its opponents. In this way, the team’s fi rst match under Zaccheroni ended in a 1-0
victory for Japan, which surprised the world.Following that, “SAMURAI BLUE” traveled to Seoul for a match on October 12 against its near neighbors and rivals, Korea Rep.national team. Japan national team had a tough game in which they were harried by the pressure of their opponents from the start, but they responded with tenacious defense. Gradually, the Japanese side raised their rate of possession and picked up the pace, allowing them to get in some shots at goal by means of linked attacks. But despite displaying a positive attitude throughout the match in both attack and defense, Japan was unable to score, and the game ended as a scoreless draw.

AFC ASIAN CUP QATAR 2011
Last year, Japan competed in the FIFA World Cup Finals for the fourth time in succession. The first time was in 1998, a major achievement that came 34 years after Japan's first entry into the Asian qualification tournaments for the World Cup in 1954. In 2002, Japan successfully co-hosted the World Cup with Korea Rep., and reached the last 16, breaking through the group stage on only their second appearance in the World Cup Finals. Then, in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, which was the team’s fourth successive World Cup Finals, Japan again passed through the group stage thanks to victories over Cameroon and Denmark. Although Japan fought hard against Paraguay in the Round of 16 in the tournament’s second stage, the team lost on penalties and was unable to advance to the last eight. Japan has achieved three overall victories in the AFC Asian Cup, including consecutive championships in 2000 and 2004. Japan also led Asia in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup, where the team overcame some of the world’s strongest football nations, including Brazil and Mexico, to fi nish in second place.
Since the establishment of the J. League, Japanese football has advanced by leaps and bounds, with the result that the World Cup is no longer a competition merely to dream about, but one in which Japan has the potential to reach the highest levels. The professional league-J. League-was established in 1993. Since its inception the league has been explosively popular, leading to the creation of a new generation of Japanese football fans and sports fans. In today’s Japan, the popularity of football as a sport is exceeded only by that of baseball and sumo wrestling. One factor in football’s rapidly increasing popularity has been the presence of such world-class star players as Zico, Pierre Littbarski, Dragan Stojkovic, Dunga, and Leonardo. Many fans and children were enthralled by their outstanding performances on the pitch. Not only their skills but also their mentality as professionals became fi rmly rooted in the Japanese football world. Even after retiring as players, their impact on the game is still strongly felt with Zico coaching the Japan National Team in 2002 and Stojkovic managing Nagoya Grampus and guiding them to their

fi rst J. League title in the 2009/10 season.Through their direct exposure to the skills of some of the world’s top football players, the clubs in the J. League learned by example how to take big strides forward. The J. League, which began with ten clubs, is currently divided into the two divisions of J1 and J2, with 18 clubs in J1 and 19 clubs in J2 (20 clubs from 2011), who are striving to rise up against their rivals and to ultimately take the championship. Each club is steadily improving its competitiveness year by year, and this strength has begun to be refl ected on the Asian and world stages in recent years. The Urawa Reds won the AFC Champions League in 2007, a feat emulated by Gamba Osaka in the following year in 2008. Both teams also performed well to achieve third place in the FIFA Club World Cup, which they both entered as the best Asian club team in the respective years. Accordingly, Japan can now be considered a prominent force in Asian football not only at the national level but at the club level as well. The growth of Japanese football is not limited to the development and expansion of the J. League. Under the
banner of "world standards", the JFA is moving ahead with spreading popularity and a three-in-one consolidation strategy consisting of "national team strengthening", "youth education", and "coach training", while also focusing on the cultivation of excellent coaches and the nurturing of young players. Moreover, the association has established the JFA Academy to provide young people who aspire to a career in football with an elite education, including human education. One of the earliest results of these efforts was Japan’s entry into the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after a hiatus of 28 years. With Hidetoshi Nakata on the team, Japan gained a historic 1–0 victory over a Brazilian national team that featured such top players as Rivaldo and Ronaldo. Since then, Japan has gone on to participate in four successive Olympic football tournaments up to and including the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In the youth age category, Japan fi nished in second place in the FIFA World Youth Championship (presently the FIFA U-20 World Cup) held in Nigeria in 1999. Several players who later became active in Europe's top leagues, such as

Shinji Ono, Junichi Inamoto, Naohiro Takahara, and Mitsuo Ogasawara, shone brilliantly on that occasion. At present, the environment surrounding Japan’s football players is improving thanks to advanced facilities and talented coaches. As a result, beginning at a young age, Japanese players who have benefi tted from this training are displaying their skills throughout Asia and the rest of the world. For example, Takayuki Morimoto joined the Italian team Catania at the age of 18 in 2006, while Keisuke Honda, who went to the Netherlands in 2007 at the age of 21, transferred to CSKA Moscow in Russia in 2010.
Since the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, a long list of other Japanese players, including Eiji Kawashima and Yuto Nagatomo, have become active throughout the world, particularly in Europe. In addition, Shunsuke Nakamura, Ono, and Inamoto, who have gained experience playing in Europe's top leagues, are returning to the J. League this season to bring that experience back to Japanese football.Going forward, the Japanese football community will continue to commit itself to turning out as many top players like them as possible while striving to make the Japanese National Team SAMURAI BLUE one of the top ten teams in the world.

AFC ASIAN CUP QATAR 2011
By hosting world-class football events in Japan, the JFA makes it possible for the many Japanese football fans and supporters to learn about the charm of those events while promoting the further popularization and consolidation of football. The Japan Cup, which began in 1978 with invitations to national and club teams from all over the world, changed its name to the Kirin Cup in 1985, and the following year the Japan National Team began to participate in this tournament. In 1992 it was accredited as an international "A" match by FIFA, and today it provides an important opportunity for strengthening the Japan National Team. The fi rst FIFA sponsored competition hosted by Japan was the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship (presently the
FIFA U-20 World Cup). On that occasion, the young Diego Maradona (until recently coach of the Argentina national football team) visited Japan as a member of the Argentina national team, achieving victory while wowing Japan's football fans with his amazing play. Also, for 25 years between 1981 and 2004, Japan hosted the TOYOTA European/South American Cup, in which the winners of the European Cup and South American Copa Libertadores competed. Japanese football fans were intoxicated from being able to watch these world-class matches live. In 2005, in recognition of the country’s quarter-century record of experience holding these events, Japan was chosen to host the FIFA Club World Cup, in which the club champions from six continents competed fiercely to be the top team in the world. The event was held in Japan each year up to 2008 and it is scheduled to be held here again in 2011 and 2012.
In 1995, Japan became an official candidate to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and co-hosted the first FIFA World Cup to be held in Asia. This competition was called "the World Cup of Smiles". Not only were the fans of the world able to fully enjoy the ultimate in football, but warm interaction between athletes and fans was possible in the hosting areas and camps, and friendship with Korea, who joined Japan in hosting the World Cup, was deepened.

The World Cup was a great success in which the national character of the Japanese, their history, and culture were expressed to the world, gaining the approval of the people of many nations. Not only were many stadiums and practice facilities built or improved for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but the Japanese people received many gifts both tangible and intangible, including amicable international relations and social interaction that crossed generational boundaries.
Boosted by the popularization and development of football in Japan and by the successful hosting of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the JFA has also expanded its fiscal scale and has become involved in a broad range of activities through football. The JFA is a member of the "Team Minus 6%" citizen's project for the prevention of global warming being
promoted by the Japanese Government under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment. From January 2010, this activity was reconstituted as the Challenge 25 Campaign *1. In agreement with the thrust of this continuing initiative, the JFA is currently developing a variety of environmental activities. The association is also involved in carrying out trash separation and paper cup recycling activities at stadiums together with Kirin Group, the official sponsor for the Japan National Team, and the fans and supporters who come to watch the matches. Moreover, in 2007, the JFA started an "Environment Project" bringing together people concerned and the J. League and other key persons. In addition to encouraging the installation of more natural grass grounds, which are considered effective in combating global warming, throughout the country, the JFA is also promoting recycling and the use of public transport, as well as other activities as a contribution toward the protection of the global environment. Moreover, in July 2009, the JFA became the world’s fi rst sports organizing body to register with the United Nations Global Compact *2. The JFA considers that its activities based on “the JFA’s ideals” are in accord with the UN Global Compact, and so from here on the association will strive to address international issues and contribute to the development of local society and of the next generation of human resources.

The Objectives and Goals of the JFA DREAM ASIA PROJECT
"Make Asia the leading football region of the world"Without improving the level of Asian football, Japan cannot truly improve its own level. We will aim for co-existence and co-prosperity by solidifying unification and collaboration with the diversity between the nations.
"Make the JFA the leader of Asia"Based on the recognition that signifi cant developments have been achieved in football in recent years, the JFA should become the leader of Asia and work toward the improvement of the level in Asia overall.

level by 2020. This campaign proposes six challenges (comprising 25 actions) with the objective of reducing CO2 emissions and working towards its realization.
*2: A platform of UN agencies, private-sector companies and non-profit organizations to address various problems in the international community, in particular wealth disparity resulting from globalization. Its goal is to achieve sustainable growth at the global level by encouraging individual companies and organizations to demonstrate independent, creative and coordinated leadership.
Since the establishment of the J. League in 1993, football in Japan has expanded dramatically to the extent that the football organizations of other Asian nations have requested the JFA to cooperate with the development of the sport throughout the region. As a result, since 2002, the JFA has been actively involved in contribution activities in Asia, including the support of personnel training for
football players and coaches, and youth cultivation in each nation. In 2009, these contribution activities were collectively entitled the ‘‘JFA DREAM ASIA PROJECT’’. Based on a more stable support structure made possible by the solicitation of supporting companies, the association provides active support encompassing the overseas deployment of coaches and referees and the hosting of camps for national teams, including for players in developing age groups. Every year too, the JFA conducts a course presenting coach development and referee training systems that are gaining recognition among Asian nations. Additionally, the association provides financial support for the establishment and operation of youth-oriented competitions in each nation through the Asia Youth Cultivation Program, and the association also cooperates with the Dentsu Group and the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in carrying out the ‘‘Project to Distribute Soccer Balls to Children in Asia’’. Through these diverse activities, the JFA is making a major contribution to the development of Asian football.
