New Medicare Cards Have Started To Mail! Medicare has started sending new cards with new Medicare numbers to people with Medicare. Your new Medicare card will include a new number unique to you, instead of your current Social Security-based number. This will help to pro-tect you against fraud.
Medicare will mail cards on a rolling basis, sending a new card with a new number at no cost to everyone with Medi-care over the next year. To update your official mailing ad-dress, visit https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ or call 1-800-
772-1213. If you want to know when new cards start mail-ing to your area, visit Medicare.gov and sign up to get email alerts from Medicare. We’ll send you an email when cards start mailing in your state, and we’ll also email you about other important Medicare topics. While the cards have a new look, your Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same.
Don’t Get Scammed! Scammers are using the rollout of
new Medicare cards as an opportunity to get beneficiaries pro-tected information. Please be aware that multiple scams have surfaced across the country. Scammers call beneficiaries claim-ing to be from Medicare. The scammer will say they have to up-date information so the person can get their card. This is not le-gitimate. Medicare is not calling people, they are mailing out new cards. Cards for Connecticut residents currently on Medi-care will be mailed sometime after June 2018. If a beneficiaries address has changed it’s up to the beneficiary to update their address with Social Security online or by phone at 1-800-772-
1213, TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. You can see above what the mailing will look like (provided by the Centers for Medi-care and Medicaid Services).
Reminder! DO NOT share your Medicare Number or other
personal information with anyone who contacts you by phone, email or by approaching you in person, unless you’ve given them permission in advance. If you have any concerns or sense sus-picious activity please feel free to come to us at the Sullivan Sen-ior Center or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

FLAG DAY FACTS:
In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June
14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the
United States, which happened on June 14, 1777,
by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
The American flag, also nicknamed as “Old Glory” or “star-spangled banner”,
has changed designs over the centuries. It consists of 13 equal horizontal stripes
of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the can-
ton bearing 50 small, white, five-pointed stars. Each of the 50 stars represents
one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original
13 colonies that became the first states in the Union. Many people in the United
States honor this day by displaying the American flag at homes and public build-
ings. Other popular ways of observing this holiday include: flag-raising ceremo-
nies; Flag Day services; school quizzes and essay competitions about the Ameri-
can flag; musical salutes; street parades; and awards for special recognition.

PLEASE DON’T LEAVE YOUR PUPS IN THE CAR!
That cool weather that didn’t want to leave us has finally given way to warmer temperatures! With that said please keep in mind that your dog should not be left in your car when you come to the Cen-ter, the Thrift Shop or anywhere for that matter. Please know that Torrington Animal Control will be called for any dog left in a car in our parking lot.
“It is important for people to understand that 10-15 minutes can be dangerous or even deadly. A dog who suffers from heat stroke can suffer from irreversible brain damage or even an agonizing death. It is considered animal cruelty if the dog is found to be adversely affected by the heat. What we look for is heavy panting, lethargy, pale gums, vomiting. If we see any of the signs we take the dog and arrest the owner. I would strongly advise if they do not want that to happen then the dogs should stay home, no matter what.”

Yogurt Yogurt is a great source of protein and carbohydrates that contains good!for!you bacteria (probiocs). It is also
loaded with vitamins such as potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, iodine, zinc, and vitamin B5. Yogurt also con-
tains levels of calcium and Vitamin D, although these levels vary in different types of yogurt. A downside of yo-
gurt, if you’re not careful, can be the sugar content. Many yogurts can have up to 25 grams of added sugar!
While some of this could be natural, be sure to check the label! Here are some different types of yogurt and
their benefits.
!
WHOLE MILK: can contain anywhere from 6 to 8 grams of fat and around 8 grams of protein per serving.
LOWFAT: although these are typically lower in fat, at around 2 to 5 grams, they are usually flavored or fruited,
and because of this, can contain up to 44 grams of sugar per serving. GREEK: Tradional yogurt that has been
strained and had the whey removed, making it thicker as well as higher in protein (around 10 grams).
WHIPPED: These types of yogurt have more air, which give them a lighter consistency resulng in less amounts
of yogurt in the container as well as fewer calories. SOY: Made from soy milk, so it is suitable for those intoler-
ant to lactose, but typically has the texture and consistency of dairy yogurt. Soy yogurts are o7en much lower
in saturated fat than whole milk or dairy yogurts.
!Addional Yogurt Notes! All yogurts begin life in the same way: Milk is heated, cooled, and le7 to ferment. The process by which regular
yogurt is transformed into the thicker; creamier Greek variety is surprisingly simple. Once makers strain the
yogurt to let the liquid whey run off, what’s le7 behind is Greek yogurt. The remainder is denser in terms of
both texture and nutrion than its predecessor with almost double the protein but triple the saturated fat. It
also contains only half as much sodium and half the carbohydrates of regular yogurt. However, much like fro-
zen yogurt, the term "Greek yogurt" is not regulated. Somemes it’s arficially thickened with things like gela-
n, so be careful out there!!
Soy yogurt is even an approved meat alternave in the USDA!regulated school lunch program.!
Yogurt contains beneficial bacterial cultures that can help enhance acvity inyour immune system. The bacte-
ria used to make yogurt are known as yogurt cultures. Fermentaon of lactoseby these bacteria produc-
eslacc acid, which acts on milkproteinto give yogurt itstextureand characterisc tart flavor.

!!!Did you know?!68% of women eat yogurt, compared to only 43% of men!so there’s a fortune waing for anyone who can
convince more men to eat more yogurt. A company called Powerful Yogurt has tried to appeal to the manly!
man with its bold black and red packaging and claims of a “protein!packed” snack opon for those with “acve
lifestyles.”!
The Oxford English Diconary recognizes at least a dozen spellings of the word “yogurt,” including but not lim-
ited to yoghurt, yogurd, yahourt, yahourth, and joghourt!although your computer’s spell!check may disagree.!
Turkish shepherds had been turning milk into yogurt as early as 3000 BCE.
