Personal Profile Chemistry graduate studying Fine Art. Previous experience of a

career in industry was followed by voluntary work in developing nations. I have met

the challenges of studying as a mature student and will graduate in July 2019. My art

is based on the contemporary theme of memory and the development and

classification of personal archives.

Artist Statement

My art revolves around a need to use experience as the means of making

meaningful associations and images. A long memory bank allows me to make

connections and associations with objects and images. I assemble the raw materials

of personal archives and manoeuvre their classifications. Sculptural forms are

resolved from the re-imagined usage of found materials. Previous experience of a

career in the textiles industry has given me a transferable understanding of colour

and light.

2006 – 2011 Industry Consultant British Consultancy Charitable Trust

Assignments as a volunteer in India, Pakistan (3) and Nepal (2). Problem solving in

textile processing. Passing on knowledge, training in health and safety and helping

to improve the skills of the operators. FairTrade Nepal also included handmade

paper manufacture and evolving processes for new natural fibres.

2001 – 2002 Crew member Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games

Project Management to establish and run an Information Station in the Athletes

Village. These were the first games with concurrent events for elite athletes with a

disability. Communicate at all levels with athletes, their guests and VIPs from 72

nations. An insight into event management. Represent the crew at lunch with H.M.

The Queen.

Disability Statement John is profoundly deaf and wears digital hearing aids in

both ears. Due to his hearing loss John is unaware of what is happening to the sides

or behind him. John can lip read if he can face the speaker and see their lips. John

may use his portable hearing loop.

Current Practice My practice is responding to a personal interpretation of mundane objects,

reconceptualized as stand-alone sculptures or as a part of an archive.

The contemporary theme of memory is referenced by the recall of my childhood, my

industrial experience and a family interaction with postal history and communication.

This is accessed through an installation that archives the addresses that I have lived

at. These are presented as changes in ways of living and as a record of the changes

in communication through the decades. As such it reflects the passage of time.

Importantly it shows the acceleration of the pace of change. My initial inspiration is

the boxes of Joseph Cornell.

I am particularly influenced by the notion of artistic progression from a

souvenir/memento to a collection and hence an archive. The use of the archive as a

personal sink; storage and memory. But you have to forget before you can

remember. The concept of boxing up and labelling provokes half-forgotten images,

rediscovering the past that can then be reconceptualized and lead to a new depth of

understanding.
