A Guy’s Guide to the Finance Interview

Rules of Thumb:• Classic Always Wins• Danny’s advice to Linus: “Be funny but not memorable.” Except be the opposite• Your goal is to look the part not to be the best dressed guy in the office• Attention to the details of your outfit is a conscious/subconscious indication of

how you’ll treat your work product• Authenticity will be the secret to your success

Suits Shirt Tie Shoes Accessories

Do’s • Solids (but texturized)• Extraordinarily subtle

chalkstripe (tread lightly)

• Medium width lapels• 2 Button• Notched Lapels

• Solids (white and blue)

• Micro ginghams & checks

• Micro stripe• Medium spread• Button cuffs

• Hermes, Ferragamo or Thomas Pink styles

• Pinks, Blues, Reds, Yellows, Greens

• Bring the pop !

• Horse bit loafers• Cap toe lace ups• Oxford Wingtips• Cap toe or wingtip

dress boots (for the advanced dresser)

• Black, Dark Brown

• Always match your belt to your shoe color

• Match your bit on your shoe to your buckle if applicable

• Spend a little money on your belt. It shows.

• A little color in the socks is okay

Don’ts

• Herringbones• Stripes• Glenplaids• 1 or 3 button (and

please nothing over 3 buttons…)

• Peaked Lapel• Double breasted• Skinny or wide lapels

• Solids (pink, yellow or any shirt belonging in TGI Friday’s)

• Big Checks• Big Stripes• Multi colored stripes• Button down or full

spread• French cuffs!!

• Vineyard Vines• “Grandfather” stripes• Anything with

‘Trump’ in the name• Paisleys• Super bold colors or

patterns

• Penny Loafers• Anything you’d wear

casually on your business school buddy’s father’s boat…

• Cordovan, light brown

• Tie bars• Pocket squares• Lapel pins or lapel flowers

will look and act in front of their client• Their client is a Fortune 500 CEO• Their client is their lifeline• This could be an investment bank as much as it could be a software company –

adaptability is key• Can be a little more flirtatious with style than your investment banking comrades• Know your geography
