RENDERING

- A highly illusionistic method of drawing (usually used in Design)

Don’t forget:• composition• shape

IMAGINARY DESIGN!

But……… references from the real world

Illusions of:• form (with tone & colour)• space• texture

Step 2: draw imaginary patterns, silver casing & hook – look at samples for ideas – lines only

Step 1: draw shapes of shell – lines only

Step 3: choose pencil crayons that may work – look at the sample shell

Step 4: Experiment with the coloursdrawing spheres. What colours will dull each other?

COMPLEMENTARIES!

NB!

1. May Green & Purple DULL each other because the yellow in the May Green is the complement of purple. This means they shouldn’t overlap because bright jewel-like colours are needed, not dull grey colours.

2. Shells have patterns to camouflage themselves. This means patterns HIDE form. They cancel out illusions of volume. Be very careful you don’t emphasize the patterns or you will flatten the form.

Step 5: Use pencil crayons to create the conical &

spherical illusions of form.

• IGNORE THE PATTERN!

• REMEMBER TO USE YOUR WHITE FIRST TO PRESERVE

THE HIGHLIGHTS

Last of all – put in the patterns using Indigo,

Prussian Blue & Dark Sepia

Where there are darks, put in DARK patterns.

Where there are lights, put in LIGHT patterns.

Layer & scrape back with oil pastels

- Look at the complementary colour scheme for figure & ground.
