FRIENDS OF ST MARY’SThe Jan 16 General Meeting ''Planning the programme'is cancelled. We already have enough speakers for2014.
The A to Z of Mental Health – A talk by Dr Guy RobertsIf you didn’t come to this talk because you thought it maybe depressing it is a great shame as Dr Roberts left theaudience in no doubt that professional help is availablelocally, many symptoms of mental illness are curableand that the topic can and should be discussed openlyand without stigma. He raised awareness of many issues involved. Theseinclude access to services, the role of professional staff, mood disorder, anxiety, substance abuse, schizophreniaand dementia. The first port of call is via the GP serviceand 90% to 95% of patients will be successfullymanaged by their GP. He stressed the importance oflistening and talking with patients and this is truewhether treated through the NHS or as a private patient. He also touched on the funding restraints the servicehas to cope with.In brief, Dr Roberts explained that anxiety is normal andthat it can be used to positive effect. Substances suchas alcohol and drugs should be avoided and theiroveruse is just as common in rural dwellers as thoseliving in urban areas. 80% of fatal traffic accidentsinvolve someone who has drunk alcohol as had 40% of
A and E casualties. Some illnesses, such asschizophrenia are life long but treatment is available tocontrol many of the symptoms. 1 in 100 people sufferfrom this distressing disease.Dementia is caused by structural changes in the brainand is not necessarily due to people ageing. Hedescribed the different types of dementia and stressedthat in all cases of mental illness, early diagnosis isinvaluable. At the end of the talk we had a clearer insight into theaccess and structure of the mental health service as wellas a better understanding of the causes and symptomsof mental illness. Dr Roberts’ empathy and care for hispatients was obvious throughout his talk.

The November talk, Photographing Interiors by JohnCritchley, was an iillustrated talk. He showed someexamples of the work he had done and the technique heused. This often involved getting up very early to get thebest daylight The pictures were very impressive andinterested everyone, there are many keen photogra-phers in Michelmersh. We are always pleased to know of anyone in the areawho can give a talk or recommend speakers. We appearto have an endless supply of local talent.

ST. MARY'S, MICHELMERSH ~ ST. ANDREW'S, TIMSBURYin the United Benefice of Braishfield

Telephone: 01794 368335/01794 878020braishfield@gmail.com
Day off Friday
Why is Jesus special?
Wouldn’t it be great if God spoke to us?Words communicate who we are, what we are like, what we think and feel and want.If God were to speak to you, what would you want him to say? But how could God speak to us in away that everybody in every country, in every race, in every culture, in every generation couldunderstand? How about if he became one of us? And that’s what he did in the person of Jesus.God stepped inside his creation and shared our humanity. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.
Because God shared our human existence, he knows what our lives are like. He can understandand help us in joys, sorrows, pleasure and suffering. What’s more we can see in Jesus that God isa loving God, forgiving; caring for broken, hurting people & passionate about justice. Not distant orout to get us the moment we step out of line. In the person of Jesus, God is speaking to people, toyou and to me, and saying ‘I love you; I’ve come to find you, to rescue you.’
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could show us the way through life?Jesus came as the true light. In his light things appear for what they really are; and that includes us!That’s scary, and that’s why a lot of people keep away from Jesus. He sees right through us andknows us as we really are - our secret thoughts, motivations, selfishness, guilt - as well as ourhopes and dreams, our hurts and sadness. Yet the amazing fact is that he loves us for who we areand wants to have a relationship with us. He came to offer forgiveness for the past and peace in ourhearts today.
I wonder what 2014 might hold for you. Jesus comes as a guiding light; he can show us how tomake sense of our lives; to give us purpose, meaning & direction in an often bewildering, uncertainand lonely world.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could give us a life that really satisfies, where we genuinelybecome who we are meant to be?Many people are so busy making a living that they never make a life. They fill it with work andconsumerism yet deep down is a sense that something is missing. Jesus said ‘I have come that youmight have life, life in all its fullness’. He spoke of a new quality of life; life in touch with God; lifewhich has a future and a hope.
Most people are fed up with empty God-words or outward religion. If there is a God then he must bereal, relevant, knowable.Jesus is God speaking to us, God coming to us.Jesus shows us the truth about God and about us and offers to lead us through life.Jesus gives life that has meaning, that satisfies and that has a future beyond death.
That’s why he’s special!

MICHELMERSH AND TIMSBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY A most memorable talk was given on November 11th byChris Bird, Lecturer at Sparsholt College. Chris a regularand most welcome visitor to our Society who excelledhimself with his talk on ‘PLANT FERTILIZERS’.Speakers are usually expected to talk for some 45minutes and then perhaps answer any questions thattheir talk may have raised. Chris invited comments orquestions during his talk that members present thoughtmight need elaboration. Such was the interest in hissubject that he talked for some 90 minutes (!) answeringquestions.
December 9th saw the festive season once again with theexcuse for the Society’s most popular event. Therewere about 60 members who gathered together to enjoythe CHRISTMAS PARTY. This was once again in thepopular format starting with a welcoming warming glassof mulled wine prepared and served by Peta & JohnHunt. Then the ‘pictorial’ competition – not identifyingplants or foliage as you might expect but a “Simon Drew”type trying to recognise Trees, Mammals , Book Titlesand Countries amongst other things. A great deal of
cheating, such as looking over friends shoulders, tookplace. Eventually, Kate Allan was declared the winner. The meal followed: sausages , baked potatoes with thetrimmings; then mince pies, teas or coffees and mints.Traditionally this is followed by the games. Always ‘Passthe Parcel, with John Hunt trying to keep order afterwhich he tries to reduce cheating in ‘The Hat Game’:members are prone to sit on spare hats to avoid beingcaught as Bob Davis operates the music with abruptmusical stops! The last two members left in the competi-tion vying for the prize – “ The Father Christmas Hat”won by Darrell Pugh. . Chairman Jane Chambersbrought the evening to a happy ending thanking all whohad contributed to its success and sending everyonehome with Christmas greetings.
The Society’s New Year 2014 will be welcomed in onJanuary 13th with a talk “Look Who is in our garden” byJennifer Harmer which promises to be both entertainingand informative.

NEW ROAD ARTISTSOne of the highlights of the term was the visit of artistTeresa Lawton, who came up from Dorset to show ussome of her work and to advise us on our paintingprogress. Most of us benefitted from her wise words andthe day went quickly with a very pleasant atmosphere. It has been a term of concentrated painting and at theend of which we put our work on show for each other tosee the full extent of what we had been doing. It seemsas though it has been a very productive time for all withmany in the group making progress in their individualstyles. The big regret was that our treasurer was not with us.After a nasty fall she has had to take some time out torecover. At the time of writing we expect her back soonand certainly we hope she is fit for the New Year.
How did you do with the quiz?1.Sable is the hair most used in water colour brushes. Some times ‘squirrel’ but they don’t like having their tailspulled.
2.Jackson Pollack did Action Painting and was oftenknow as ‘Jack the Dripper’.3.He actually never married his partner but they lived afairly reclusive life, so her name was not Mrs. Pollack(trick question). Her name was Lee Krasner.
Try these;1.What was Rosetti’s first two names? What was his wifefamous for?2.What was the Art movement in the 1930’s called, which was also in ceramics and architecture?3.We’ve all heard of Picasso (I Hope) What sort ofpainting was he most famous for and who was his friendwho painted in a similar style?Have a go or wait until next time for the answers.Take care
