Strength Training Myths Debunked

The following series of

articles are to help

clear up misconcep-

tions and ideas of strength training.

It can be hard to find all the facts

and concerns surrounding what to

do when it comes to your health. We

are here to help clarify some of the

most common myths that people

have asked us at MLFitness.

Myth #8: You can’t do strength

training without special equip-

ment.

Fact: Strength training involves

resistance, and there are many

ways to provide resistance. You

can use your own body—think

push-ups and crunches. You can

use free weights, barbells, dumb-

bells, and other types of equip-

ment—some of which is expen-

sive and some of which is very

affordable. Or you can use home-

made resistance bands or

weights (a pound of margarine

weights the same as a one-pound

weight).

Profane Polly A man goes to a pet store in order to buy himself an exotic bird. He tells the clerk, "You know I've had a number of pet birds in my life and now I'm looking for something really special. Have anything I might like?" "Yessir, I do. I have a South American parrot rumored to have a vocabulary of over 400 words. He can talk about the weather, about sports, and about politics. But I might add, he is very expen-sive." "Well, he sounds just perfect. Why don't you bring him out here?" The clerk goes into the back room and brings out an exquisite green bird with bright feathers and a dark, golden beak. He sets the bird on a perch and excuses himself to take care of another customer in another part of the shop. The man looks at the bird and starts talking to it in the usual way, "Pretty bird, pretty bird, Polly want a cracker?" The bird replies in such beautiful English the man can hardly believe his ears. They have a conversation about the recent rains, they talk about the latest bills in Congress, and even talk about the latest Super Bowl. The man is dumbfounded. "I'll take him," he calls out to the clerk, "take him home with me today."

"Very good, sir," says the clerk. They conclude the transaction and the man walks out with the parrot on his shoulder. As soon as they get to the man's home, the bird goes into a loud tirade of profanity. One four-letter word after another. On and on without end. The man can't believe it. "Look, bird, you didn't do any of this in the shop. I have guests coming over tonight. Don't you dare embarrass me with this kind of language." The bird continues on and on with the profane cursing. The man gets fed up and throws the parrot into his freezer. That will quiet him down, thinks the man. Sure enough, within a minute or two, the bird has gone completely silent. The man opens the freezer and the bird takes a deep bow. "Forgive me sir, I will never talk like that again. I just do not know what got it to me." The man is satisfied and motions for the bird to perch on his shoulder and the man goes about his business. A few minutes later the bird leans over to his ear and asks quietly, "Can I ask you a question?" "Sure, what is it?" "Uh, what exactly did the chicken do?"

I have to tell you that I had the Baked Haddock with mus-tard crumbs for dinner last night. I don't generally like rice and didn't expect to eat it. Well, I ate everything and it was one of the best dinners Paul has made. I love your food but this was exceptional. I don't know what kind of rice it was but it was delicious. Make more fish dinners with that rice and I am in. See you soon. Sue P

Ethical Wills: The Most Meaningful Gift You Can Leave Behind By CzepigaDalyPope LLC

In your estate plan, you leave behind financial wealth and possessions, but the most valuable items you can pass on are those that cannot be measured. That’s why you should consider writing an ethical Will. What is an ethical Will? An ethical Will is a great way to reinforce, to those people dearest to you, your values, insights and beliefs. It is a profoundly meaningful piece of writing that captures a part of you, perhaps your very essence, that won’t be found in any formal estate plan. An ethical Will is not a legal document; you don’t need an elder law attorney to help you draft one. In fact it’s about as official as an envelope you might use to scribble your grocery list. It’s simply your opportunity to leave a spiritual legacy to your family. You could think of it as a love letter to those you hold close.

Why it’s a good idea Impart wisdom: You have lived a long time and learned a lot, so why not bestow your wisdom on those you leave behind? It is a great way to pass along your ideals and guiding principles, to reinforce to those dearest to you what’s in your heart and what you would like for them to remember most about you. Consider it the most important message you’ll ever write. Imagine that your words can guide, encourage and inspire your loved ones. That it can heal and fill the empty places in their hearts, and the gaps in their histories. Say the unsaid: It can clarify issues left unsaid in a basic Will and testament – such as why your estate is divided in a cer-tain way. It can be the thread that ties the loose ends together. Foster inter-generational connections: The contents of an ethical Will can affect future generations for years to come. As your loved one reads about your values and priorities, they’ll better understand the family culture they are a part of. A healthy exercise: Like journal-keeping, it’s an act of self-discovery, requiring deep reflection. It clarifies your identity and fo-cuses your life purpose. Perhaps you’ll find that one of the best reasons to craft an ethical Will is for your own sake!

When should you write one? There is no specific time to write an ethical Will but probably the most fitting time is at middle age and beyond, when you can gather your life experiences and convert them into wisdom to pass along. Keep in mind that it should be a work in progress, with changes made along the way.

How to get started There’s no right and wrong way to express what only you can express. It can be a couple pages or it can be a few sentences. It can be typed or handwritten. If you want to get fancy, it can be recorded in video or audio format. Often, the biggest challenge in writing an ethical Will could be getting started. Staring at a white piece of paper can be intimidating, so here are some ques-tions that may help you start the process.

What are the values you wish to pass on? • What family stories would you like to share?

• What are the lessons that you’ve learned in life?• Do you want to ask for forgiveness or forgive others?

• What are your spiritual beliefs? • What hopes and dreams do you have for your loved ones?

• What advice would you offer others about living their lives? • Do you have regrets?

•Is there anything in your life you would have done differently? • What do you want to be remembered for? Address your ethical Will broadly to “family and friends” or mention specific people – the choice is yours. Be sure to write it in your own voice and speak from the heart. You don’t want it to sound like a straightforward, cold legal document (since it isn’t one). Make it a sincere, descriptive, uniquely personal message to your loved ones. Keep your ethical Will with your oth-er estate planning documents rather than buried in a drawer so that you know it will be read and cherished by your loved ones at the appropriate time. Your ethical Will may be one of the most cherished and meaningful gifts you can leave to your family. And it won’t cost you a dime.

So last month I was speaking to a group and one of the gals who was a customer heard me talk-

ing about the single serving size menu and she had no clue about it! She told me she gets the

newsletter and orders off the menu. Well I immediately understood the problem, we only in-

clude the monthly menus in the newsletter! So this month we made a “Special Edition” that

includes the entire Single Serving size menu. I apologize for never including it earlier! Of course

this balances off the client we met last week who stopped ordering because they got bored of

the food, turns out he never knew about the weekly and monthly menus and was just ordering

off the single serving menu.

We hope everyone had a Christmas and Hanukah holiday that was memorable

and inspired the gratitude for which the season represents. The New Year is here

and it can be as anything you want it to be, just focus on the gifts, miracles, bless-

ings and silver linings and be light and shine wherever you go!
