A JOURNEY FROM CHRISTMAS
TO EASTERThe Revd Rob Gillion, Rector
If you ask for directionson a journey you mayget advised not to start
from where you arenow. If you want tomake the journeytowards Easter youmay not think ofChristmas as being thestarting point.
However, the imagesabove remind us thatthe Jesus whose birth
we celebrate atChristmas is the sameperson who sufferedand died on the crossbefore going on to theglory of hisResurrection. We arecalled, as his disciples,
to follow Jesus on thatjourney fromChristmas, through the
events of Holy Week,towards EasterResurrection.

STAY WITH US
A BIBLICALREFLECTION FOR
EASTER
Luke 24:28-32
As they came nearthe village to whichthe disciples were
going, Jesus walkedahead as if he weregoing on. But theyurged him strongly, saying:
Stay with us,because it is almostevening and the dayis now nearly over.
So he went to staywith them. When he
was at the table withthem he took bread, blessed and broke it,and gave it to them. Then their eyes wereopened, and theyrecognised him andhe vanished fromtheir sight. They saidto each other:
Were not our heartsburning within us
while he was talkingto us on the road, while he was openingthe scriptures to us?
Jesus always waits foran invitation. He never
enters where he is notwelcome. In fact hetells his disciplesearlier that if theythemselves are notwelcomed in a townthey are to shake thedust from their feet. These two disciplesuttered the mostimportant words of
their lives: Stay withus. They had beguntheir conversation withJesus very negatively :We had hoped that hewas the one to redeemIsrael. (Luke 24.21)
Leaving Jerusalem, their faces downcast, they were so miserablethat when they thoughtabout the events in
Jerusalem theystopped walking. Theyhad nowhere to go.Perhaps theyremembered the wordsof Peter to Jesus:Lord, to whom elsecan we go? You havethe words of eternallife. (John 6.68)
Jesus then delightsthem with the Bible
study of a lifetime, rekindling their faith inthe word of God. Theirhearts burn withinthem as they begin towalk with a lighter stepalong the road to
Emmaus. Indeed timeflies and suddenly theyarrive at theirdestination, and Jesusmakes as if to go on for if they do not offerhim an invitation thereis nothing more he cando. This truth isconfirmed again in theBook of Revelation:
I stand at the door andknock. If anyone opensthe door I will come inand be with them. Andeat with them.(Revelation 3.20)
Jesus never forceshimself on us. Unlesswe invite him he willalways be a stranger, but once we invite himinto our life he will
make himself fullyknown in the everydaybreaking of bread.
