Carpool PleasePlease consider carpools. Parking at the San Clemente Presbyterian Church will be di�cult for a few months due to construction. Please do not park in the SOUTH parking lot. That is only for the preschool. There will be an elevator just past the large stairs for those who would prefer to use the elevator. For extra parking, turn on Cabrillo towards the ocean, then into the parking lot on the corner of Cabrillo and El Camino Real. There will be members to direct the way.

Jan learned to sew at age 8 on a treadle machine while in a 4-H club and with her mother looking over her shoulder. She really didn’t like to sew but had to make all her own clothes after graduating from elementary school. Therefore she didn’t have a lot of clothes. After taking high school home ec classes her attitude about sewing changed and she decided to get a degree in home economics education from the University of Arizona. She came to California in 1965 and got a teaching job in Santa Ana. She married Ted in 1967, taught a few more years then had two children. In 1973 Jan made her �rst quilt for her newborn daughter. She has since made over 200 quilts. She is a charter member of Beach Cities Quilters Guild and was president in 2000. She has lived in Laguna Niguel for 37 years with Ted. They have two grandchildren that they often visit in Northern California. She has spent many hours quilting along I-5. Jan retired from teaching home economics after 21 years and has taught quilting for Capistrano Uni�ed School Adult School for the past 9 years. She feels she has learned as much or more than her students. Every quilt she makes is a learning experience. Even quilts from the past that she owns teach her lessons. The Surfside Quilters Guild, was established in March 2009 to promote quilting and other �ber arts in the South Orange County area. The Guild o�ers the opportunity to share experiences with other quilters in an atmosphere of fellowship, as well as to enhance the knowledge and skills of its membership.Newsletters are distributed via the internet.

Nancy Sew Notes

As my granddaughter Isabel would say “We did it”! The entire board agrees that our inaugural meeting was exciting to produce and fun to attend.

Everyone worked so thoughtfully to create a friendly, e�cient, vibrant happening. Thanks to Kathie Bellamy for the fun committee signs. Thanks to Diane Collins for arranging the yummy lunch at Hapa J. Publicity attracted the audience, Hospitality was yummy, Welcome guided in the audience, Membership e�ciently signed up new members, activities were there for everyone, the Stars of Surfside Quilt, Logo contest, Monthly Mini, Patterns to buy, Friendship Groups, Workshops and Philanthropy. It was enjoyed by all.

Big thanks to Del Thomas. The comments I heard were that it was the best guild presentation ever. Thanks to Del for using her funds to support such talented artists, promote their work, store them so carefully, and then to share them with us.

I started quilting seriously in the early 80's when I took a class from Suzanne Stanton. More recently I have enjoyed taking classes from Jan Hirth. Taking classes motivates me to start and �nish a quilt. I enjoy making quilts for my family, friends and charities.I would say that my favorite quilt technique is applique. I also enjoy hand quilting.I learned how to do Sashiko embroidery from Nancy Ota, the pattern I used for the monthly mini is by Sylvia Pippen.Along with quilting I love to make pine needle baskets, and working with gourds, needlework, embroidery, cooking, sewing, plants, music and I could go on and on. Not enough hours in the day.

Congratulations to Yachi Monarrez. Yachi traveled by train from Los Angeles to attend guild.

Nancy has been sewing since middle school, and became addicted to quilting after taking Suzanne Stanton’s Adult Ed classes in San Juan Capistrano. In time she designed patterns and began to teach and lecture. She cannot imagine life without quilting, luckily her husband loves �shing, and they do enjoy traveling together.

PHILANTHROPY STASH BUSTERS

Surfside Philanthropy will begin meeting on Monday, June 22 at A Time To Sew, from 10 to 4. We’ll meet on the 4th Monday of every month at A Time To Sew. Our aim is to create a friendship group that uses fabric from their own stash for making quilts for charity. We thought we’d call ourselves Stash Busters. If someone doesn’t have a large stash to choose from, we’ll accept blocks, which we’ll piece together with other block donations. We’ll be donating to various local charities, including Orangewood Children’s Home, San Clemente Senior Center, San Clemente Presbyterian Church’s Outreach program, and Laura’s House.

In addition, we’re starting an ongoing food drive. At each guild meeting, we’d like our members to bring an item to donate, canned food, mac & cheese, etc. Also useful are the sample shampoos and lotions from hotels. Monica Shafer dshafer1@cox.net Julie Vlahos juliev10@cox.net

Surf ’ s Up 9 ” unfinished

Surfside Quilters Guild is up! Each month make blocks for your own Surf ’s Up sampler quilt. This month make 3 of the Surf ’ s Up blocks.

Cut: For one block A: 1 sky blue 3 7/8” square; cut in half diagonally. 1 water blue 3 7/8” square; cut in half diagonally. B: 1 sky blue 3 ” square; cut in half diagonally. 1 water blue 3 ” square; cut in half diagonally. C: 1 sky blue 2 3/8” square; cut in half diagonally. 1 water blue 2 3/8” square; cut in half diagonally. D: 3 sky blue 1 ” squares. 1 water blue 1 ” square.

Piecing: Square in a Square Technique 1. Sew one sky blue D to one water blue D. Sew two

sky blue D’s together. Sew both units together to form a 3 ” square.

2. Sew C triangles to square to form 5 1/8” sq.

3. Sew B triangles to square to form 7” sq.

4. Sew A triangles to square to form 9 ” sq.

5. Press and square up block.
