Message of the Director
Dear Colleagues and Partners,
I came back from the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris,
France, where we had fruitful week long training sessions on a number of new
instruments and mechanisms in place like risk management and resources
mobilization as well as interactions between the DG, ADGs and directors and
heads of the UNESCO field offices on strategic, programmatic, financial and
human resources management issues of UNESCO. Field Directors and heads of
offices have continued to innovate and bring UNESCO closer to its Member
States, participating in UN joint activities at country and regional levels, adapting
and enhancing their operations to deliver a more responsive, competent and
pertinent field presence. A number of side meetings and events were held amidst
the very interesting policy debates and commissions on 39/C%.
This week we celebrate World Science Day for Peace and Development,
promoting South-South and North-South-South Cooperation to foster Science,
Technology and Innovation (STI) for sustainable development and to encourage
mutual understanding and peace, with a focus to encourage girls' participation in
science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in tackling the gender
inequalities in STEM.
I encourage us all to take part in the 16 days of activism against violence against
women. Preparation for UN joint activities in Kenya are taking place and
UNESCO is working with UN Women, UN Habitat, UNFPA and UN
Environment to involve colleagues and the wider public on social media and in
3
loco campaigns and activities on the UN Campus in Nairobi to advocate for an end
to violence against women and girls, especially in schools. The campaign will start
on 25 November and will end on 10 December 2017. The campaign would overlap
with another very important upcoming Sub-Sahara Africa Conference on
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in partnership with several UN
agencies and UNESCO Regional bureau in Africa addressing also issues of
sustainable cities with the participation of governors or Mayors of a number of
Cities across Africa.
Looking forward to the UNESCO East Africa Annual Retreat, I encourage you to
send a 30 seconds video responding to the question to "What can UNESCO do in
the Region to Leave no One behind?" We are looking forward to hear what staff
and partners are thinking in making UNESCO even more relevant in the region.
In conclusion, to rate your level of satisfaction of the newsletter, I also invite you
to take the 50th Issue of the Newsletter Survey to be able to deliver in a SMART
way!
Have a productive and happy week ahead,
Ann Therese Ndong Jatta
