HELLO 2011!
You’re looking good! We started this year with a Snap.
Crackle. Pop! New Year Party on
January 19 and it was a huge success!
We feel truly blessed to have so many
wonderful and talented friends in the
wedding industry. Thank you to
all the generous event sponsors
for supporting us and most of all,
thank you to all of you for
celebrating with us! We want to
thank Gloria McCune of Grand
Engagements for planning such an
awesome party for us. We couldn’t
have done it without you. And thank
you Melissa Selmanson from Avia Hotel
for accommodating all our needs and
being so fun and easy to work with.
We were going to push the party
coverage until the next issue, but
we just couldn’t wait that long and
we know you guys are super excited
to see all the amazing tablescapes
from the 2011 Design Challenge! So
make sure you check out all the deets
from the party in this issue.
This year we had a panel of elite
judges from the wedding industry to
pick our winner. We were honored to
have Jasmine Star of Jasmine Star
Photography, Summer of
GreyLikesWeddings.com, Jen of
GreenWeddingShoes.com, Leila of Be
Inspired PR, Carissa of JL Designs, and
Jenn of HostessWithTheMostess.com
and their expertise to decide the most
deserving winner, who won the $900
check and a photoshoot with Jasmine
Star. It proved to be one of the most
difficult decisions to make with all the
excellent tablescape designs, but one
team came up on top. Congrats to
our Design Challenge winner,
Nancy Park of So Happi Together,
U T T E R LY ENGAGED | 3
L E T T E R from the E D I TO R S
Jane Jeon of Olive Hue Paper, and
Cindy Park of Floral Elements. The
guests also got to vote for their favor-
ite. The People’s Fave Award goes to
Brooke Keegan’s team! We were once
again blown away by the teams! Don’t
forget to check out the people behind
the tablescape designs in the article on
page 24.
We wanted to start the year on a
clean slate with a “White” issue.
In this issue, we featured an intimate
black and white wedding in Big Sur, a
wedding style created on Cloud 9, and
a fun bridal shower blowout for a bride
and her girlfriends. We’ve put together
creative DIY ideas by crafty bloggers
and picked out our favorite cool fonts
to use for your wedding. Also don’t miss
Katie’s recommendations on white sand
beach resorts to consider for your
honeymoon. Join us in welcoming
our newest wedding expert, Yifat
Oren, a celebrity wedding planner,
to help answer your questions about
anything wedding-related. We are
very excited to have her on board!
We also added our special Tear
Jerker edition to this issue. Thank
you to all who submitted their special
moments to us. It was hard not to cry!
We hope you take time to just pause
and enjoy these precious images and
videos captured by you. You might
want to grab a box of tissue while
you’re at it.
We have a lot of fun things planned
for this year. You will notice already
a little face lift in this issue. Expect to
see much more from us and more
connecting with all of our engaged
couples! Here’s a little clue of one
big event that we’re planning for our
engaged couples, one word, shopping!
You won’t want to miss it! For now,
enjoy this issue and have a
poppin’ new year!
LOVE,
henny &lucia

POP Wedding!
Drawing inspiration from a snap of a photograph, crackle of a daring art movement, and a pop of color, this tablescape captures our couple’s true love story and begins their tale of happily ever after. Our fun-loving couple met by chance while observing a picture at the OC Museum of Art. Pop art pictures from Roy Lichtenstein became the backdrop of their first date and continues to inspire their romance, and today, their wedding!

WHO IS YIFAT?
Where should brides start when they are planning their wedding?Online, where else?! You have clearly found your
way to the multitude of wedding resources available
online if you are reading this. When I first started
my business, the world wide web was not used by
businesses or consumers (hard to imagine today, but it
is not that long ago, believe it or not), so brides turned
to magazines. Today there are fewer magazines in
print but many blogs and websites that offer valuable
information, exciting inspiration and hours of perusing.
Other than getting inspired and dreaming about this
most spectacular day, whatever that may mean to you,
there are a few things that are important to consider:
1. Your Budget. Now, many times I have clients call
and say that they are not sure what their budget
is because they don’t know how much things cost.
That makes perfect sense. Unless you or your
families have gone down this path before, you
probably won’t have an idea. It is however a good
idea to have this conversation somewhat early with
your families and get some kind of ballpark.
2. Your Guest List. This item, of course, affects the
number one item, budget. Start a preliminary list.
Ask your parents for their wish list and see what
you come up with. It may need to be trimmed, or it
may be just right. This is also important because it
affects your search for a location. For example, a
space that fits 200 guests may be too cavernous for
100 guests and clearly wouldn’t work the other way
around either.
3. Your Date . If you’re pretty open to Fall 2011,
rather than, September 17, it will be easier to find
a location. Make sure close family and important
friends have no major conflicts.
Lastly, if you are planning on hiring a wedding
planner, my recommendation would be to get them
involved sooner rather than later as they can help
you with all of the above. They will put together a
preliminary budget for you to consider and help you
with location scouting. They have the inside scoop
on locations and what works for one person may not
work for another, so this will help you narrow down
your search, and save you valuable time.
What are your top 5 wedding trends predictions for 2011?
1. ColorPantone chose a pink for the
color of 2011, but I choose coral.
I love it and I love combining it
with greige (grey & beige).
2. Understated OverstatedDo have a spectacular wedding, but don’t be offensive
in your choices in today’s economic climate, some
of your guests may not be as fortunate, but they will
enjoy a well thought out event.
3. Grooms cakes are back.I love this tradition. Remember the bleeding armadillo
cake from Steel Magnolias? The wilder the cake, the
better the stories!
4. Feminine and layered dresses
5. Non-matching bridesmaid dresses. This has been going on for sometime but I am officially
declaring it a trend as almost no one is having
matching dresses at this point, and that’s a good thing!

you come up with.

White is the most the forgotten color
because it’s everywhere and we take
it for granted. Why not play it up a bit
and give white the opportunity to shine
at your wedding. You don’t have to use
it all over, but white can be playful by
using it as an accent color. If done right,
white can add depth, interest, and an
added freshness to any wedding
because it’s used so unexpectedly.

weet Emilia Jane imagined a wedding
for a design-savvy couple who drool
over Dwell magazine and daydream of
brunch at The Parker in Palm Springs.
They appreciate great style but never
take themselves too seriously.
The Pearl, known for its “classic, cool
and clever” style and for its “spirited”
night life scene, was the perfect back-
drop for our cheeky, chic couple.

Of course the prince of cheeky + chic, Mr. Jonathan
Adler, had to be the guiding spirit through the design
process. His love bird salt + pepper shakers were
repurposed as cake toppers and would make a great
addition to the newlyweds’ home after the wedding.
Using the Menagerie collection as a model, vintage
brass animals were spray painted white and used as
paper weights for each guest ’s place card.

Inspired by New York itself, vintage

SEND ME A POSTCARD, DROP ME A L INE
Deciding what to give guests as favors was one
of the earl iest and easiest decisions Courtney
a n d B r i a n m a d e d u r i n g t h e i r p l a n n i n g .
Keeping in mind that the majority of their
guests were traveling in to their wedding,
they decided to make each of them a set
of postcards. Each favor contained a pack
of f ive postcards, each featuring a lyric
from a song about New York. They wrapped
the pack of postcards in a yel low bakery
bag and sea led i t w i th a navy and w h i t e
s t r iped r ibbon and custom tag .

Courtney created flags for the cupcakes with
fun sayings. She used a zig-zag punch to cut
them out and attached them to toothpicks
with clear stickers on the back. She also
created i l lustrations of each flavor so that
guests could tel l which they were choosing.
Not only were the cupcakes delicious, but the
cupcake flags were a fun piece of eye candy.

So when it comes to their wedding, they
wanted it to be intimate and special. Being
the nature lovers that they are, the venue was
extremely important to them. Derek proposed
to Charmaine at the top of Angels landing in
Zion, so their wedding location had to top that.
And they found their perfect place – Paion, a

ocean and is surrounded by nature.
They booked all the cabins along the river at
Ripplewood Inn for the weekend and invited 30
of their closest family and friends.

INSPIRATION
I love the textures and patterns of maps. It comes from my passion for travel.Nothing makes me happier than exploring the backstreets and secret local hauntsof a city. And although I would rather get lost than pull out a map, I have foundother uses for all that paper I collect from my travels. My inspiration for this proj-ect comes from one of my favorite places in the world: New York City. Having livedthere for 5 years, I traveled up and down the borough of Manhattan, down andaround Brooklyn and across Long Island on the NYC subway countless times. Thebright colors of the 1 and 9 line, the BDFQ and the NR trains are symbolic graph-ics that will be forever stuck in my visual memory. Ok, so for me NYC is the mostromantic city in the world...What better way to meet a future loved one than ridingthrough the historic tunnels of the iconic city?

event planner & styl ist
my name is Emilia or EJ of Sweet Emilia Jane.
i’ve been doing it for ever. I’ve worked in events in one way or another for over ten years but I started SEJ two years ago.
i’m good at list making, time line tracking, emotion managing and creative crafting.
my work environment is sometimes an at-home office I share with my husband and puppy or the flea market or the arts supply store or the flower mart.
my work is inspired by old photos of my parents, interior design magazines, Eames chairs, French films.
my biggest accomplishment is being brave and following my heart.
my worst fear is not living a creative and passionate life.
if i have all the money in the world, i would still do exactly what I’m doing but maybe with a fancier office ...in Paris.

my name is Esther of My Bride Story.
i’ve been doing it for for quite some time but this is my 4th year doing it full-time.
i’m good at multi-tasking and motivating others.
my work environment is depends on which day you ask. ;) but mostly exciting and lots of fun ideas bouncing back and forth.
my work is inspired by the couple’s love story, their personality, passion in life and all things lovely.
my biggest accomplishment is giving birth and raising a beauti-ful family.
my worst fear is not being able to balance family & work, chasing after false dreams and not becoming the woman I desire to be.
if i have all the money in the world, i would give it to my husband who would know how to spend it wisely and seek a financial adviser. ;)

my name is Samantha of Primary Petals
i’ve been doing it for for pver 2 years
i’m good at floral design, wedding and event styling, color scheming, and working with seasonal flowers.
my work environment is also my home. I work out of my loft, which is a block away from the Los Angeles Flower District. It is a colorful and lively studio that I have created for myself and a great place to develop new ideas and designs.
my work is inspired by color, seasonality of materials, graphic design, architecture, fashion, and movies (I watch movies that fit the theme and style of the events I am working on).
my biggest accomplishment is starting my own business! It took some courage to put myself out into the wedding industry as crafty floral designer, but the hard work has paid off. I am so blessed with the creative and beautiful clients and brides I get to work with every day.
my worst fear is is loosing my husband and business partner James! He is quite the dare devil and always getting into

mischief, which has landed us in the emergency room quite a few times. However, he adventurous spirit is why I love him as well.
if i have all the money in the world, i would travel and visit my family members who are located all over the US .
i believe in providing my customers with affordable, seasonal, beautiful floristry in the greenest manner possible. This is why I walk to and from the Los Angeles Flower District to obtain my supplies every day and try to use seasonal and locally grown flowers. Supporting local farmers and markets is a value James and I hold as the highest of values, and it results in beautiful and inventive design.

ian and Larissa AUGUST 8, 2010
Ian and Larissa met
during the fall semester
of their junior year in
college in 2005 and
began dating in
November of that year.
After ten months of
dating Ian was ring
shopping and both he
and Larissa had talked
to their parents about
getting married. They
couldn’t wait to become
husband and wife, but
life had different plans
for them.

real loveIn September of 2006 Ian was in a car accident and
suffered traumatic brain injury. He fought through a
7-month hospital stay, seizures, various setbacks and
daily therapy. Throughout the past four years Larissa
has continued to love Ian unconditionally and walk
beside him on his difficult journey.

FROM KAYLEIGH’S PARENTS, KELLY AND RICHARD WINCEWe would like to express our deepest g ratitude to the vendors and volunteers who cameforward to g ive our daughter, Kayleigh Wince, the wedding of her dreams on Feb. 21. A fewmonths ago, my son-in-law, Brian Nabili, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Meghan Ely,President of OFD Consulting, heard about their situation and the small wedding they wereplanning, and she quickly sent out word. The Richmond wedding community came togetherlike I have never seen any community do before. Without batting an eye, everyone cametogether and donated their time and talents. Within three weeks, they helped pull off thewedding of my daughter’s dreams. There are no words to express how g rateful we are andthe love that we feel for those who came forward and helped us out.
