ISSD Africa Photo Competition

Elijah Mwashayenyi – SEVIA Extension officer advises a farmer on cabbage and onion production during Nanenane (Agricultural Show). We use demonstrations (which epitomise the theme "Seeing is Believing") to show farmers how to grow improved varieties and utilise better technologies.

Grace Gitu – AFSTA Africa Seed Trade Association(AFSTA) brings seed stakeholders together to share experiences of the Africa seed industry, understanding,` collectively we enable availability of the best quality seeds to farmers that ultimately lead to improved food security for the continent’.

Raphael Laizer – MoA Clean Cassava Cuttings preparation in Masasi District, Tanzania 2012. Cassava being an important crop in Masasi, is attacked by CBSD and CMD which are threats to productivity. Recommended management practices are planting clean cuttings and rouging out observed infected plants.

Fetien Abay – MU This barley variety has unique varietal traits used for dry and medium altitudes and high quality used for drought affected areas. The farmer in one of the trial sites demonstrates the relevance of this quality seed variety, Tigray, Ethiopia.

Willem Heemskerk – KIT Demonstrating a new sweet potato variety by host farmer in Tanzania, Lake Zone. Variety originated from Lake Zone Agricultural Research Institute (ARI-Ukiriguru) and is multiplied by a Farmer Research Group.

Kennedy Bisani Lweya – CIMMYT Zimbabwe Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) disease screening facility which was established in 2013 after MLN was reported and huge losses experienced in Kenya in 2011 (77,000Ha of maize crop was lost)

Jonas Yogo – Agroproductions This is 20 ha of Maize Hybrid Seed field in Burkina Faso. It is yellow maize which can produce between 8-10 tons per ha. We encourage hybrid seed use by farmers because of the high yield potential and diversify use of yellow maize: human consumption and animal feed production and to increase the farmers revenue and fight again poverty in rural area.

David Eagle – MEDA Smallholder cassava farmer in Masasi District (Tanzania) purchases planting material from Quality Declared Seed (QDS) producer. This material has been inspected by Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) and affixed with a certification label. This farmer paid 200 Tsh (0.09 USD) per stem.

Cyriaque Shizubwoba – IFDC Producers know the value of using quality seed. During the seed fair, theses women who sell potato seeds from the informal seed system have not sold their seeds as usual. Certified seed were most sold compared to informal seed.
