Thomas DieckhoffCrossing an IRONMAN finish line is one of the most outstanding spor-ting achievements in the world and your efforts last year allowed us all to enjoy this unique experience at our 30 IRONMAN events in Europe and South Africa in 2014. We will never forget that time and we are proud that you made these moments possible. Last year we had 20,000 more people compete at IRONMAN events in Europe, and we thank you for being part of the growth of the IRONMAN lifestyle. Next year we’re going to provide even more opportunities for athletes to experience the unique moment of crossing an IRONMAN finish line.
New additions to the 2015 calendar include: · IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire · Herbalife IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia · IRONMAN 70.3 Dublin · IRONMAN 70.3 Pula · Gloria IRONMAN 70.3 Turkey
Also, for the first time ever, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will take place outside of North America in 2015. We are proud to bring the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship to Europe and look forward to welcome the world´s best athletes in Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria.
While we might have more events on the schedule next year, we will not compromise the quality of our races. THE HISTORY OF IRONMAN
During an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, John Collins, a Naval Officer stationed in Hawai`i, and his wife Judy, began playing with the idea of combi-ning the three toughest endurance races on the island into one race: the 2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and a 26.2 mile run on the same course as the Honolulu Marathon. They decided to issue a challenge to see who the toughest athletes were: swimmers, bikers, or runners. ”The gun will go off about 7 a.m., the clock will keep running and whoever finishes first we’ll call the IRONMAN”, Collins recalled.
15 starters entering the water to race the first IRONMAN race ever. Gordon Haller wins in 11:46:58
10
On February 18, 1978, 15 competitors, including Collins, came to the shores of Waikiki to take on the first-ever IRONMAN challenge. First to cross the finish line was Gordon Haller, a taxi cab driver and fitness enthusiast, who finished in 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds.
In 1980 founders John and Judy Collins give ABC‘s „Wide Wor-ld of Sports” permission to film the event, bringing worldwide recognition to IRONMAN. Only two years later college student Julie Moss collapses just yards from the IRONMAN World Championship finish line. She is passed for the title, but does not give up; she crawls to the finish line, unknowingly creating one of the most iconic moments in IRONMAN history. Julie’s
courage and determination inspires millions and created the IRONMAN mantra that ”ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”. In 1986, Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe, won her first IRONMAN Kona, setting a new women’s record of 9:45:14. In 1992, she became the first woman ever to eclipse the nine-hour mark with an 8:55:28 performance and in 1996 she wins her eighth IRONMAN World Championship title.
In 1996, Lothar Leder from Germany became the first athlete to break the eight-hour barrier with a time of 7:57:02 at IRONMAN Europe.
With the recognition of the Physically Challenged Athletes in 1997, Australian John MacLean becomes the first athlete to power a hand cycle bike and wheelchair to an official IRON-MAN World Championship finish. In the same year, Jim Ward competes as the first 80-year-old in Kona race history.

BUFFALO CITY/EAST LONDON
Athletes will begin their day with a 1.9km ocean swim in East London‘s Orient Beach. Protected by the breakwaters of East London‘s harbour, athletes can expect generally calm and warm waters. The sighting of dolphins is always a possibility. The rolling hills and climbs of the 90.1km bike course will be a challenge. Touted as one of the most challenging bike courses on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit, the undulating hills is a test of character for even the most seasoned of athletes. Road closures will allow the athletes to safely navigate the course while en-joying the inherent beauty of the landscape. The 21.1km run consists of two-loops with spectacular ocean views and crowd support. Finishers are greeted in true style with African dancers, music and spectators aplenty.

Along the IRONMILE emotions are born - all athletes will feel the energy at the 300m long IRONMILE (which will be passed seven times) from their spectators, families and friends. IRONMAN Zurich Switzerland offers a race venue situated at the shore of the marvelous Lake Zurich, but still in the middle of one of the world‘s most important financial melting pots. The swim course features a unique and very spectator friendly „Australian Exit”, while athletes will experience a real „Alpe d‘Huez” feeling as they climb the infamous „Heartbreak Hill” on the bike course, which is lined with spec-tators cheering and ringing the typical Swiss cowbells. The concluding marathon leads the athletes through beautiful city parks and along the lake. As one of the first IRONMAN events in the world, IRONMAN Zurich Switzerland comes up with a so called „rolling start”.

ANTALYA/TURKEY
In 2015, IRONMAN 70.3 will be taken to the cradle of civilization for the first time - to the ancient cities and the azure seas of the Antalya coast. On the high-end training grounds of Gloria Sports Arena, where history and the future are one. Being held in late October, this race is a perfect opportunity for all those who want to stretch their season further into the autumn month. It offers a great possibility to combine racing with a holiday with the family or dear ones to give something back for the support over a long and strenuous season. The perfect travel infrastructure in the Antalya region offers easy accessibility. The lack of visa requirements for Russian citizens should allow athletes to focus on the race rather than on bureaucratic acts.
