Ionic Compound Animation Project

Admit Slip

Draw a sketch of Na giving electrons to O to make the ionic compound Na2O.

Today’s Agenda

• Admit Slip• SAT Pre-Assessment• Ionic Compound Animation Project!

Homework: Project is due by Thurs 11/14!

Objectives• Students will be able to:– Predict the ions that elements will form– Predict the ionic compound that two elements

will form– Create an animation showing electrons being

given by metals to nonmetals to make an ionic compound.

Ionic Compound Animation Project• As a group of 2, you need to make a PowerPoint

with animations to show 3 examples of how electrons are given and taken to make an ionic compound.

• Your elements and compounds should be different than mine.

• Your elements must have – the correct number of electrons (smaller is probably

easier)– The correct valence electrons moving from metal to

nonmetal– The correct ionic charges and ionic compound

Example 1: Na and F

Na+1 + F-1 NaF

Na F

Na+1 F-1

Example 2: Ca and Cl

Ca+2 + 2Cl-1 CaCl2

Example 3: Mg and N

• You can use this file to get started but you must have different elements and compounds:– Example 1: • The charges should be opposites (+1 and -1), (+2 and -2),

or (+3 and -3)

– Example 2: • One charge should be -1 or +1 and the other charge

should be +/-2 or +/-3

– Example 3:• One charge should be +/- 2 and the other should be +/-3.• You will have today to work on the PowerPoint in class

and it will be due by Wednesday 11/21!

Classwork• Choose your partner.• Decide which ionic compounds you would

like to make.• Download this PowerPoint from our blog.

http://msmannion.wordpress.com• Work quietly for the rest of the period with

your partner.• PowerPoints are due by Thursday to
