The word PEDODONTICS is made up of two words,i.e., pedo +dontics

Pedo is derived from “pais” which in Greek means child, “dontics” stands for the study of the tooth.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

.

Pedodontics or pediatric dentistry is an age-related speciality ,meant for preventive and curative dental and oral healthcare of infants and children, usually up to the age of 15 years.

It’s a very interesting and challenging speciality and requires thorough knowledge of growth and development of teeth.

Prevention and behaviour modification are the two hallmarks

Pediatric dentistry is an age defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive, preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence including those with special health care needs.

RATIONALE AND NEED

Children are the key to future. The future adult dental health depends on the dental healthcare of childhood.

Sound and healthy deciduous teeth , provide the required space for permanent dentition.

Children require special dental care at all ages because they are unique, physically and psychologically,at their stages of development.

At every stage of development, special type of steps and treatment are required ,which are usually not required by the adult.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The basic aim of

pediatric dentistry is to create not only a good patient but also a good citizen of tomorrow.

Instill a positive attitude and behaviour.

To provide total quality health care for infants, young children and adolescents.

To promote awarenes in the community through dental health education.

Parental guidance and counselling.

As a pedodontist, the overall health of the child should be of primary concern.

Prevention is always better than cure, as it saves the patient from physical and emotional trauma, saves time, money and maintains overall good general health.

While selecting the treatment modality a pedodontist should always focus on the comprehensive oral health care of the child.

The developing dentition in a growing child needs to be monitored by the pedodontist constantly from the beginning.

The pedodontist needs to update his knowledge from time to time with the recent advancements.

CHANGING TRENDSInitially,the preventive and diagnostic

techniques were limited in dental practice. With the changing trends and development

there has been a tremendous increase in the scope of pedodontics.

The factors responsible are:1. Increased knowledge in the public

sector regarding child health care.2. Wide recognition of fluorides.

3 . Introduction of high-speed technology in the preparation of teeth requiring restoration.

4 . Great improvement of various anesthetic agents in clinical use.
