Use the map of Canada’s ecozones in your textbook to help you.

The 20 ecozones that make up Canada.

Another version.

Which ecozone do WE live in?

We have looked at how Canada is broken into various climate regions, soil regions, and vegetation regions.

Ecozones combine these factors (plus others) to create generalized regions with similar characteristics.

Ecozone is short for “ecological zone.”

Places within an ecozone share many things: Landforms Climate Soil Vegetation Water Geologic history Wildlife Human activities

Ecozones examine the connections between these factors

Because our country is so large and diverse, even when we generalize we still end up with many different ecozones: 15 terrestrial ecozones 5 marine ecozones

Copy figure 14-4 on page 160 comparing our ecozone (Mixwood Plains) with the Boreal Shield.

With a partner, choose two neighbouring ecozones to study (e.g. Northern Arctic and Southern Arctic) and complete a chart like figure 14-4.

What do you think were the most important factors in deciding to split the area in two ecozones? (e.g. huge difference in climate)
