Planning Lessons and the Overall Season
Dance teachers who have a larger vision for their education programs are likely to set themselves up for success. Teachers who only view their lessons from the lens of “one hour at a time” can be miss-ing key components of student and skill development as the teacher is not able to view the season as a collective journey in training and development. The largest goal teachers should have is season-based; the next segment would be section goals such as pre-season, choreography season, competition season, and post-season. Finally the teacher then has monthly goals and targets that will break up into four sections for weekly goals and targets; and lastly hourly goals and targets for each lesson. Season planning can seem overwhelming at first but once done a few times a solid season plan can be modified in future years to further refine targets and the path to prospective learning and lesson delivery. Please enjoy the following templates we have included to help assist with setting up your season plan.
The next pages include the following:• season planning (pg 231)• a blank monthly calendar (pg 232)• Season Planning Master Priorities (pg 233) • current school calendar (pg 234)• season planning by month (pgs 235-237)• lesson plan preparation (pgs 238-244)• themes/lessons for lessons and events (pgs 245-246)• planning your dance recital (pg 247)

Season Planning
Evaluate your Current Program, what needs to improve: Do you have any specific goals? Take an inventory on every aspect of your program, do not take the attitude “this is the way we always do it” look for things that you can change or do better: Gather Information about your season, competition dates, away trips, rehearsals, performances, when should you be loading and off-‐loading in the physical departments of strength/power/endurance? Evaluate the previous season and the current dancers, reflect on new teams if there was change in the groups of dancers: Make a list of everything that must be taught for the season: Divide the season into segments, Pre-‐Season (ie, August) Choreography Setting (ie, Sept-‐November) Choreography Cleaning (ie, December-‐February) Competition Season (March-‐ May) Recital and Post Season (June-‐July) …. Then determine the focus on each of those parts of the season and structure. Are you practicing to learn or are your practicing to perform? (how much room for safe errors should be taking place during each segment?)
