IntroductionWhat is CAD
CAD (Computer Aided Design)
Any part of the design process utilize the computer as a tool = CAD
In textile and fashion industrials, CAD include graphics applications used for purposes of visualizing design, technical specification and functions.
4
CAD was originally developed on industry-specific or “turnkey” system
CAD is a mainstream tool for the competitive market
Most companies have integrated some form of CAD technology into their design and production processes
History
5
Applications of CAD
To create colourways 65%
Printed fabric design 60%
Merchandising presentations
48%
Knit designs 41%
The National Knitwear Association and A. Grudier Consulting conducted a surveyof 228 apparel manufacturers in 1995.

What is the CAD used for Merchandising?
CAD is used for Visual Presentation for Merchandising process

From internet point of view:
the internet allows users to browse through designer collections at home:

14
Common use of CAD : design of surface pattern for fashion and furnishing fabrics
The system allows complex designs to be completed in short time
As software packages are increasingly specialized, easier for designers to work with design, e.g. PrimaVision, photoshop, illustrator
15
Benefits Increase productivity Reduce product development time Increased creativity to improve conceptual
design Reduced cost of samples and prototypes Lower reject rate Create universally understood
communications among all phases of operation
16
Application Benefit
Textile design Time cut 50% - 75%
Reduce sample cost
Lower reject rate
Garment design Saves times in approval process
Saves costs in material and labour
Evaluate designs Respond to changes quicker
Virtual presentations to consumers
Adapt to consumer reactions
Stimulate designer’s creativity
More time for development
17
Online catalogue Reduce costs and times
Retail sales feedback Increase customer satisfaction
Work on design with customers
Increases customer satisfaction
Improved quality
18
The role of computers in textile and fashion industry continue to grow
The industry is looking for designers and merchandisers who are computer literate
19
Some Drawbacks
Cost Designer – machine operator – lost creativity Feel lost without the tools of artists Time to fully realize the system’s capabilities

Questions
Any limitations for CAD application in textile and garment industry?
Can CAD system replace traditional sample production process?

CAD Facilities in ITC
23
PRIMAVISION (TCX) – located in QT608Textile and Fashion Design System
Design system famous for its speed, stability and user-friendliness.
Easy-to-use graphics tools for fast style, pattern and colour development, catalogue and storyboard creation.
Design collections using libraries including Silhouettes, Woven Constructions, Accessories, Knit Structures, Textures, and Materials.
A variety of professional modules for knit, weave and textile print design.
24
Adobe Photoshop/ Illustrator – located in QT602
General Purpose Design System
Image editing
Common software used in fashion design/ fashion presentation/ graphic design
Compared to PRIMAVISION it is more user-friendly and the cost is much lower
25
located in C041 (weaving lab.)
Tajima Embroidery Machine
Designed for high speed operation at 1,000
stitches per minute and quieter environment.
Special Purpose Garment Design System

Digital Weaving, Norway AS
Rapid Sampling System: Weaving CAD/CAM (1)
27
AVL looms – compu-dobby
Input and edit a design on screen and immediately execute it on the loom. It's still handweaving, but with greater efficiency and infinitely more creative control.
Rapid Sampling System: Weaving CAD/CAM (II)
28
located in C042 (dyeing lab.)
TexPrint – digital printer
Editing or retouching the images.
Colour Reduction Tools, Automatic Repeat Setting Tools, and Graphical Editing Tools.... enable the user to process the images for final printing.
Possible to process complex images, and in no time, the image is ready for printing in different permutations and combinations.
Supports colour separations for specific colours and as per the planes for e.g.: [RGB, CMYK]
Rapid Sampling System: Digital Printing
