The Ghettos

• 1516 – Jewish quarter in Venice• The Germans regarded the establishment of

ghettos as a “provisional measure to control and segregate Jews while the Nazi leadership in Berlin deliberated upon options to realize the goal of removing the Jewish population.”

• The final solution is not implemented until 1941

Poland’s Ghettos

• largest ghetto in Poland was the Warsaw ghetto• more than 400,000 Jews were crowded into an

area of 1.3 square miles• Other major ghettos were established in the

cities of Lodz, Krakow, and Minsk. • Tens of thousands of western European Jews

were also deported to ghettos in the east.

Lodz Ghetto

Theresienstadt• "camp-ghetto" • existed for three and a half years

– November 24, 1941 and May 9, 1945. • Theresienstadt served three purposes: • Transit camp for Czech Jews

– Germans deported to killing centers, concentration camps, & forced-labor camps

• ghetto-labor camp • Holding pen for Jews

– Hoped that the poor conditions would quicken the deaths of deportees

• PROPAGANDA – Red Cross visit 1944 (Danish)– “beautified” for visit resumed deportations after visit

The Effects of anti-Semitism

• After America’s entry into the war, Dr. Seuss made only one cartoon depicting the murder of the Jews of Europe

• Dr. Seuss chose Pierre Laval as his topic

• Under Laval’s leadership, Vichy France deported foreign Jews from French soil to the Nazi death camps.

Only God can make a tree to furnish sport for you and me, published on July 20, 1942

One Final lesson
