The Shocking Truth!

Electrical Systems

• PCM• BCM• Exterior Lights• Interior lights• Power accessories• Heated seats• Radio/ System• Navigation systm.

• Starting• Charging• Backup Alert • GM - Onstar• Ford - Sync • Airbag systems

What is electricity?

• Electricity is the flow of electrons on the valance, outer, shell of an atom.

Two Types of Electricity?

• Conventional Flow vs. Electron Flow• Conventional Theory: electricity flows from

positive to negative• Electron Theory: Electricity flows from negative

to positive• Blame it on Ben!• For our purpose: Electricity flows out of the

positive terminal of the battery into the negative (ground).

Conductors

• Conductors have one to three electrons in their valance band.

Examples:• Platinum • Copper• Silver • Gold

Insulators

Insulators have eight electrons in their valance band and do not conduct electricity well.

• Plastic • Rubber• Porcelain • Wood• You

Important Terms

Current: • The amount of electricity• Measured in amps• The water in the hose

Important Terms

Resistance: • Opposition to current flow• Measured in Ohms• Your Thumb!

Meet George

• George Ohm• Born 1789• Published book in1827 on electricity • Loved to dance*

Ohm’s Law

• Resistance = Voltage divided by Current• Ohms = Volts/Amps • Volts = Amps x Ohms • Amps = Volts/Ohms

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Omega_uc_lc.svg

Example of Ohm’s Law

• Automotive Battery Voltage = 12v • Resistance of light bulb = 2 ohms• Amperage = x

Example of Ohm’s Law

• Amps = 7• Resistance =2• Voltage = unknown (x)
