Isolated Barriers
Switch AmplifiersSwitch Amplifiers are used to transferdigital signals (NAMURsensors/mechanical contacts) from ahazardous area to a safe area. Selectmodules are available with relayoutput or transistor output, inaddition to signal splitters. A uniquecollective error messaging feature isavailable when used with the PowerRail system. Due to its compacthousing design and low heatdissipation, this device is useful fordetecting positions, end stops, andswitching states in space-criticalapplications.
SMART Transmitter Power Supplies SMART Transmitter Power Suppliessupply 2-wire SMART transmitters in ahazardous area, and can also be usedwith 2-wire SMART current sources. They transfer the analog input signalto the safe area as an isolated currentvalue. Modules with splitter featureprovide two isolated output signals.
Temperature Repeaters Temperature Repeaters transfer RTDresistance values from hazardousareas to safe areas. A 2-, 3-, or 4-wiremode is available depending on therequired accuracy. The monitorregisters the same load as if it wereconnected directly to the resistancein a hazardous area.
SMART Current DriversSMART Current Drivers drive SMART I/Pconverters, electrical valves, andpositioners in hazardous areas.
Solenoid DriversSolenoid Drivers supply power tosolenoids, LEDs, and audible alarmslocated in a hazardous area.
With galvanic optical or transformer isolation, these modules provide an interface within the intrinsic safety circuit that iselectrically separated from the control system. A key advantage of isolated barriers is that they do not require a groundbetween the module and the intrinsically safe device. Available in 12.5 mm (0.5 in) and 20mm (0.8 in) widths.

937 Intrinsic Safety Isolated Barriers
1-channel isolated barrier 24V DC supply (Power Rail) Current output up to 650 Ohm load HART I/P and valve positioner Lead breakage monitoring Accuracy 0.1 % Housing width 12.5 mm Up to SIL2 acc. to IEC 61508
This isolated barrier is used for intrinsic safety applications. Itdrives SMART I/P converters, electrical valves, and positionersin hazardous areas. Digital signals are superimposed on theanalog values at the field or control side and are transferredbi-directionally. Current transferred across the DC/DCconverter is repeated at terminals 1 and 2. An open fieldcircuit presents a high input impedance to the control sideto allow lead breakage monitoring by control system. If theloop resistance for the digital communication is too low, aninternal resistor of 250 Ω between terminals 6 and 8 isavailable, which may be used as the HART communicationresistor. Sockets for the connection of a HART communicatorare integrated into the terminals of the device.

Converter Barriers
Universal TemperatureConvertersUniversal Temperature Convertersare designed to connect RTDs,thermocouples or potentiometersin the hazardous area, andprovide a proportional 0/4 mA ...20 mA signal to the safe area.
Transmitter Supply ConvertersTransmitter Supply Converterssupply 2-wire and 3-wiretransmitters in a hazardous area, and can also be used with activecurrent sources.
HART Loop ConvertersHART Loop Converters providepower to transmitters or can beconnected to existing HART loopsin parallel. They are able toevaluate up to four HART variables(PV, SV, TV, QV). Of those fourHART variables, the datacontained in any three of themcan be converted to threedifferent 4 mA ... 20 mA currentsignals.
Strain Gauge ConvertersStrain Gauge Converters are usedwith strain gauges, load cells andresistance measuring bridges.
Universal Frequency Converters Universal Frequency Converterschange a digital input (NAMURsensor/mechanical contact) into aproportional, adjustable 0/4 mA ... 20 mA analog outputand functions as a switch amplifierand a trip alarm.
FDT InterfaceConfiguring converter modules is convenient with a PCusing Field Device Tool (FDT) software. Somespecialized functions can only be selected using theFDT. The FDT interface is the specification describingthe standardized data exchange between devices andcontrol system or engineering or asset managementtools. Examples include: PACTwareTM , FieldCare,FactoryTalk AssetCentre, and Process DeviceConfiguration. FDT frame software can be downloadedat http://www.pactware.com. PACTware is trademark ofPACTware Consortium
Converters add functionality to the isolators by receiving signals from a hazardous area instrument e.g.,temperature sensors, or load cells and then converting them to an industry standardized signal such as0/4…20mA or 0/2…10V. Pulse evaluation units process a frequency signal at the input. A lead faultmonitoring system signals a lead breakage or lead short-circuit on the signal cables.

This isolated barrier is used for intrinsic safety applications. Itis a HART loop converter that provides power to transmittersor can be connected to existing HART loops in parallel. It isable to evaluate up to four HART variables (PV, SV, TV, QV). Ofthose four HART variables, the data contained in any three ofthem can be converted to three different 4 mA ... 20 mAcurrent signals. These loop signals can be connected todisplay devices or analog inputs on the process controlsystem/ control system. In addition to the current outputs, two form C changeover relay contacts are available and canbe programmed to operate at trip values from the HARTvariables. The unit is easily programmed by the use of akeypad located on the front of the unit or with thePACTware™ configuration software.

Zener Barriers
Zener barriers have long been a cost-effective solution for providing an intrinsically safe interface with field devices located inthe hazardous area. Allen-Bradley Zener barriers provide protection for electrical signals within hazardous areas and feature anarrow profile of just 12.5 mm to maximize control panel space. Zener barrier prevents the transfer of unacceptably highenergy from the safe area into the hazardous area. These Zener barriers have a positive polarity, which means the anodes ofthe Zener diodes are grounded. Depending on the application, increased or decreased intrinsic safety parameters apply forserial or parallel connection. These barriers simply snap onto a standard DIN rail for easy installation and grounding.
Zener barriers are available in the following types:
 Standard one- or two-channel barriers
The diode return feature prevents a current into the hazardousarea, therefore the current assumption for intrinsic safetycalculations is zero
In addition to the diode return feature, the high power versionhas a smaller serial resistance and therefore provides highervoltage to the field device

Intrinsic Safety Zener Barriers
Rockwell Automation Publication 937-SG001D-EN-P — October 2015 61
The Zener Barrier prevents the transfer of unacceptably highenergy from the safe area into the hazardous area. The zenerdiodes in the Zener Barrier are connected in the reversedirection. The breakdown voltage of the diodes is notexceeded in normal operation. If this voltage is exceeded, due to a fault in the safe area, the diodes start to conduct, causing the fuse to blow. The Zener Barrier has a positivepolarity, i. e. the anodes of the zener diodes are grounded.
